Kirby’s Dream Land Game Boy
Everything you need to know about Kirby's Dream Land
The original Kirby's Dream Land game for the Nintendo Game Boy handheld system was the first in the line of Kirby games, which would see a sequel on the same handheld device and an additional adventure on the NES around the same time. Kirby's first appearance has been touched upon a couple of times in the games Kirby Super Star and Kirby Super Star Ultra for the SNES and DS respectively, and following the release of the 3DS in 2011, it became one of the first downloadable Virtual Console games. to buy on the eShop. A charming and unique little platformer for its time, does Kirby's first outing still hold up today?
Kirby's Dream Land was first released in its original, true cartridge format for the Game Boy in late 1992, and featured a platforming style that is a trademark of many Kirby action games, and somewhat original for the time. Taking control of a small puffball with feet and eyes (and notably without the pink color as shown on the game's original box art), Kirby fights his enemies by swallowing them with his powerful inhale ability, and either swallowing them whole or spitting them out. collide with other enemies; a smart and interesting combat style that is still fun to use today.
Kirby's Dream Land Gameplay
At its core, Kirby's Dream Land is your basic platformer. You have life bars (six, to be precise) and your goal is to reach the end of the stage. You get to the end of the stage by walking, running, jumping, crouching and things like that. At the end of this stage is the old stage manager. Kill the boss and proceed to the next stage. Kirby is no Mario, however, and jumping on the enemy will only result in damage against the little guy. Kirby must use his weapon to defeat enemies.
But, don't start thinking Megaman over me. No, Kirby's weapon is his appetite! Kirby is able to absorb enemies and then spit them out as projectiles at other enemies. Kirby also has one final trick: flight! By sucking in a huge amount of air, Kirby can inflate his tiny body and take flight. Landing is as simple as exhaling air, which can also be used as a weapon! However, a word of caution. Unlike later games, Kirby can't copy enemies' abilities, so don't even try.
In general, this is how Kirby's Dream Land works. There are five stages in total. Each stage also has a mini boss. These bosses have half the life of regular bosses, but they are not easy to deal with. Defeating bosses and mini-bosses usually involves absorbing their projectiles and throwing them back at the boss (some kind of UPS Kirby does, huh?).
The first four stages are normal, while the fifth involves a showdown with the previous four bosses (after a short version of their stage) and ends with a showdown against the evil King Dedede. Throughout the stages, you can find various power-ups scattered around. These power-ups do a variety of things, from healing Kirby to making him shoot fireballs for a limited time.
Difficulty-wise, Kirby's Dreamland is just a little difficult. Some of the bosses can be tricky, but you'll get it after a few tries. You only have limited lives in Kirby, but you can always continue. However, if you continue, you will have to start from the beginning of the stage. The nice thing about Kirby, however, is that after you beat the game, there is an extra game mode, which is significantly more difficult (actually, it is). This gives more life to the game.
Kirby's Dream Land Story
Hey, story may not be the most important thing for platformers, but it's good to know WHY you're destroying the enemy.
Kirby's Dream Land takes place in the magical land of Dream Land (original title, huh?; also, the land's name is later changed to Planet PopStar). All the inhabitants of Dream Land have their food provided by the magic Star Sprinkles. After lunch, everyone goes to bed for a nap (healthy, right?).
Well, apparently, someone was sleeping on the job, because the evil King Dedede has taken these magical stars. While the rest of the citizens of Dream Land run around in a general state of panic, Kirby decides to do something about it. Kirby then sets out to stop King Dedede and recover the food.
It's all pretty silly, but this is what you expect from a Kirby game, the original is no exception.
Graphics
Graphically, Kirby's Dream Land comes with some cute visuals. With the only usual problem being that everything lacks any form of color, the stages have a decent variety of backgrounds and themes, such as forests, caves, mountain ranges, large palaces, and high up in the clouds. Kirby himself has a very prominent and easily recognizable design: a simple circular being with a pair of dotted eyes and short, stubby arms and feet.
Their animations look great, and other enemy sprites are a good size to distinguish the different types, and the boss creature designs also show off some cool detail by original Game Boy standards. Another good graphical feature to take into account are the intermediate scenes between the level and the end of the game.
Music and Sound
Final reflection
Kirby's Dream Land's presentation is nearly perfect by Game Boy standards. The game itself is a fun and engaging little platformer with tight controls and some great ideas. The concept of enemies being defeated by inhaling them rather than stomping them to death is nice and the ability to float is a nice addition as well. Unfortunately, the game is too easy to finish, even with the two difficulty modes. Kirby is too strong for the game he stars in.
What's interesting to note is that Kirby's Dream Land didn't have all of his signature abilities from the start. He lacks the ability to copy the powers of the enemies he absorbs. That Dream Land lacks this mechanic is not really the game's fault and therefore cannot be criticized for this either. The game is still a fun platformer with excellent production values. It's just that for a more complete version of the typical Kirby's Dream Land gameplay, players are better served by playing one of the Dream Land successors.
