How to download all GameBoy ROMs

There are many fans of the Game Boy. And who can blame them? The Game Boy is a great console, with a wide variety of games to choose from. But unfortunately, not all games are available on the platform. Luckily, there are ways to get all those games you haven't played and add them to your game library.

For those who don't know, the Game Boy (a portable video game console) was released in 1989 by Nintendo as part of its first line of portable video game consoles. It was the successor to the Nintendo Entertainment System and has been followed by numerous consoles throughout its history. Because of this legacy and popularity, many retro gamers turn to the original console when looking for old-school gaming experiences.

In this tutorial we will explain how you can download GameBoy ROMs on your PC if you do not want to buy an original cartridge or cart. This is valid for both Windows and Android users, follow the tutorial!

Download all GameBoy ROMs

The first thing you have to do is go to the official Game Boy website and search for ROMs. There you will find the links for all the ROMs of the different consoles. Now download all the ROMs you want and put them on your PC. To speed up the process you can use an external hard drive. Now you have to find a way to flash the ROMs to your PC. If you use a Linux or Mac computer, it should be easy as you can use file transfer software or drag and drop. With Windows it is a little more complicated. In this case, you can use a virtual drive to mount the files. This will allow you to access the files on your Game Boy as if it were a normal drive.

Change the file extension of GameBoy ROMs

All GameBoy ROMs you download will have one of two file extensions: .gb or .gb.gz. The .gb extension is the original extension of the Game Boy ROMs, while .gb.gz is the extension of the re-compressed ROMs. In this tutorial we will only talk about re-compressed ROMs, since they are the most popular. To change the file extension, you have to open the ROM file with any hex editor like Notepad++.

After that, you just have to find the file extension and change it to .gb. Now the file extension will appear as .gb. This is important since the file extension in Windows is used to determine which program to use to open the file. If you don't change the extension, you will end up opening the .gb file with notepad, which allows you to modify the file.

Unzip and extract all GameBoy ROM files

Once you have all the GameBoy ROMs on your computer, it is time to unzip them. Although it is possible to open .gb files with a hex editor and change the extension, we do not recommend it. If you do, you can edit the files and ruin the ROMs. Instead, we recommend that you unzip the ROMs. You now have the .gb files on your computer. We recommend that you move them to an external hard drive, USB or SD card (if you have one).

Optional, use only the ones you want: Filter to refine the results

The first thing you have to do is go to the official Game Boy website and search for ROMs. Now download all the ROMs you want and put them on your PC.
