Everything you need to know about Blue Lightning

Atari Lynx Blue Lightning Titulo del juego

Blue Lightning is a game programmed by Epyx published and published by Atari in 1989 for the Atari Lynx for the US market only. The game was remastered for the Atari Jaguar CD in 1995, although it features an interesting AfterBurner-style flight simulator and also has some G-LOC features.

As in Sega Arcade, we fly the plane in third person, always looking at it from behind, and our task is to eliminate the objectives that are indicated to us at the beginning of each level. Also shared is the fact that you have to shoot the enemy and dodge the projectiles they throw at you, although in this case everything has a twist, because sometimes they tell us that we are the ones who should attack and in those cases we have to do our thing . better In other cases, we are told that the enemy is attacking and we must avoid the enemy's attack instead of shooting. The common feature is infinite machine gun ammunition and a limited number of rockets.

The Lynx had a couple of 'showcase' titles: 'Electrocop', 'California Games'... but there was one game that took everyone by surprise when it was released. That game was Blue Lightning, a title that put you in the cockpit of a stunning blue fighter jet, shooting down targets and completing military missions. A flashy story or some kind of broad narrative isn't so important here; This game is about a series of dogfighting tasks, carried out by air, over treacherous military terrain.

No one was prepared for how good this game looked back in the day (even without the awesome McWill Lynx screen mod). 'Blue Lightning' literally wowed the crowd with some incredible graphics, scaling, explosive effects, and stunning cinematics. Some would say it looks even better than the latest Atari Jaguar version.

When you realize that this game was one of the first titles for the system, you start to wonder what would have happened if Lynx had more marketing clout around it. Unfortunately, it's only now dawned on you how classic 'Blue Lightning' really is and why it deserves to be known as one of the best Lynx titles of all time.

Blue Lightning Gameplay

Your plane looks magnificent, firing guns and firing 'locked' missiles that whiz around in a cloud of white smoke. Below, the detailed terrain scales towards you and is filled with dangerous objects and enemy armies. Or, if you wish, you can ascend and take to the skies, floating through fluffy clouds and avoiding enemy combatants. This game was like Super Nintendo's 'Star Fox' BEFORE 'Star Fox' existed! It is truly a sight to behold.

The controls are easy to learn and the jet handles surprisingly well. Firing your weapons is easy and collision detection is good. Even when traversing dangerous desert ravines, the boat feels easy enough to maneuver. Although you're always moving forward, the game doesn't necessarily feel like you're completely 'on rails': you can plummet to the ground or take to the skies.

But the game rewards you for being strategic, because you need to complete certain tasks to finish a level correctly. This could mean taking out ground targets or enemy ships overhead. So while it may look nice to look around, you'll need your wits to complete the levels correctly.

So is this a game that has negative aspects? Of course, all games do it. Surely not everyone will like it. If you don't like flying games, 'Blue Lightning' may not convince you; even though it looks awesome. But it's certainly more accessible than, say, 'Warbirds', if you're looking to try a flying fighting game.

And for fans of this type of game, you will be delighted to discover that the missions are all different and have a variety of objectives. Although the game's missions can sometimes have the same feel, they are all challenging to play, so the game itself has a lot of replay value. As for longevity, there are plenty of missions to complete, and there's even a password system that allows you to pick up where you left off.

Graphics

Blue Lightning was one of Lynx's launch titles, but you'd be hard-pressed to tell from the smooth graphics. In fact, many of the early Lynx games had some of the best graphics *ever*. BL is no different. Your fighter plane spins and rolls beautifully. The attention to animation is incredibly high, and it shows. The enemy planes, while generic, are also well animated. Pixelation rarely occurs. And the various terrains are wonderful. Everything from grass fields to sand dunes is handled with care.

Music and Sound

Final reflection

When Atari released Lynx, they were hell-bent on having a launch game for everyone. And Blue Lightning definitely fits the bill for any aerial combat fan. It's a little sad... no other Lynx game would come close to BL. But no game could top this game. If you are looking for a flight simulator, Warbirds is closer to meeting your needs. But if you just want fun, arcade action, choose Blue Lightning.

In short, if you are a fan of games with fighter jets and high-flying military action, you will love this game. And for anyone else, this game is really worth trying. It's very accessible, has plenty of action, and has the gameplay to back up the incredible visuals. It's time to take to the skies... called 'Blue Lightning'!

Shadow of the Beast Atari Lynx
