Everything you need to know about Malibu Bikini Volleyball
Grab that volleyball because it's time to play! Yes, this is the Lynx's first, last and only volleyball title the Malibu Bikini Volleyball. It's an invitation to 'place', 'dig' and 'dunk' that ball into your opponents' court in a beach doubles match. Bring your togas! Because… um… the title implies that there won't be any heavily clothed sporting activities here.
However, first things first; I have to say that no Lynx game has divided me more than this one, Malibu Bikini Volleyball. There are a lot of good qualities in this title, and since this is Hand Made Software, my expectations were always going to be high. I mean, these are the same people behind 'Jimmy Connors Tennis', 'Awesome Golf' and 'Dracula: The Undead'; all games in my personal Lynx Top 20 and rated 8.5 or higher in my reviews. So as I approach this game, I'll try to explain why 'Malibu Bikini Volleyball' receives a lower score than these other classic titles, and why you may (or may not) agree with me on that.
Malibu Bikini Volleyball Gameplay
So what are the problems, if any? The problems lie in two very specific problems; one, there isn't a lot of replay value, and two, your teammate isn't always very good.
Now, these are not game-breaking issues, and I'll tell you why. In terms of the first problem, the teammate AI is generally fine. But, in a problem that also plagued 'Jimmy Connors Tennis', his teammate is up and down when it comes to skill and can often fail miserably. This didn't matter as much in 'Jimmy Connor's Tennis' because it only affected doubles; Here, you have no choice but to play with a computer-controlled teammate. Do you see the problem? I don't know, maybe I'm the only one who encountered this problem and felt like it ruined some of my fun. But for me, as someone who played the game for a long time, the issue came up quite a bit and affected my enjoyment.
Still, even for these quibbles, I can't fault this game much when it comes to overall presentation. It's fun. It's bright. It's the Malibu sun, it's fresh air and the beach. There's not much to hate when you can play with such great graphics and such fantastic sound. It's actually a pretty relaxing title to play and a break from many of the more frenetic Lynx games out there. You learn to accept the limitations of AI as part of the course of playing with a teammate who, let's face it, will make at least 75% of the mistakes you make. And really, this is a great game to play on vacation!
Graphics
Graphically, if you ever wanted an authentic volleyball experience, this game provides it. Looks great. Digitized title images? Yes. Graphical greatness in the game? Yes actually! The beach sand and net look amazing, the sprites are presented smoothly, and all the in-game text looks really appropriate for a game of this type. You'll really feel like you're playing with your Lynx on the beach with this one. Did I also mention the background animation? Sailing ships slowly sailing towards the sun…try saying that. Also, sometimes, crowd animation. A big applause also for the coin toss before the game; A nice touch like that doesn't go unnoticed!
Music and Sound
The sound is also pristine and clear. Sadly, we miss a lot of that kind of audio discourse that really enhances 'Jimmy Connors Tennis' and 'Awesome Golf'. A little shame. But as a concession, you get better music than those two titles! 'Malibu Bikini Volleyball' has an amazing set of tracks, and you can even tune them into a special in-game radio if you want. The sound effects are minimal but effective. All in all, there are some really lovely little auditory touches to this game that make it stand out among older and newer Lynx titles.
Final reflection
Overall, 'Malibu Bikini Volleyball' is a great outing to the most popular Malibu beach volleyball in town. Although it doesn't quite reach the heights of 'Awesome Golf' and Lynx's other great sports simulators, it's still a great little game that will test your skill and give you a lot of control over how you play. Definitely a recommended title for sports lovers in particular. Even non-sports gamers will find this title a little special, especially as it shows off what the Lynx can really do. And we have to take into account what time it was. In short, it is a good title to play and have a good time in front of your emulator or, if you are lucky enough to have the console and the game, in front of the console.

Gordo 106 – The Mutated Lab Monkey Atari Lynx
