Everything you need to know about Ninja Gaiden
Ninja Gaiden… two words etched in your memory if you were a gamer from the eighties. It was an institution on the NES, and a classic arcade beat-em-up. But many don't realize that the arcade game and the NES franchise were two completely different games. They bore little resemblance to each other. While NES Ninja Gaiden was a side-scrolling adventure, with a deep story. The arcade game was a more traditional Final Fight type game. With strong emphasis on action. And it's the arcade game that came to Lynx. In fact, this might be the *only* place you can play arcade NGs outside of a real arcade. And if you've never played it, you're missing out. Because, once again, Lynx handles the arcade action perfectly.
Ninja gaiden gameplay
Forget everything you know about the rest of the Ninja Gaiden series when you play this one. Those old skills won't help you here! Ninja Gaiden for the Lynx is a fighting game, complete with a blue ninja hero, lots of strange enemies, acrobatic tricks, and lots of stages to smash. Your objective is to guide Ryu the ninja through several dangerous stages until you reach the big boss, whom you must eliminate. The plot is a little more intricate than that, but not so fascinating that it distracts you from the bifo. Basically, you make your way to the end, however you can; and then you've won the game!
Control Ryu
Controlling Ryu is mostly an easy affair, aside from some strange dynamics that take some getting used to. Your ninja can punch, low kick and high kick (one button) and jump with the other button. This jump can be executed forward (combined with an enemy airdrop if desired) or you can remove your hand from the d-pad and execute a 'vaulting' jump, which can propel you to higher plateaus on the stage.
Be careful, the enemies will follow you! Pressing 'Option 1' under lampposts or other objects will allow you to grab them and perform hanging kicks; a cool feature that is sadly underused. Hitting or throwing an enemy into fragile scenery can sometimes result in special items, including a nifty ninja sword that deals high damage. Knocking your enemies off the edge of cliffs is the easiest way to progress, but they'll try to do the same to you!
Graphics
The graphics are very good. The backgrounds are detailed and each of the 4 stages has completely new scenes and scenery. The first stage has mandatory city streets. The second stage has an interesting Las Vegas-style casino atmosphere. Level three takes place on and around a train track with trees in the background. Level 4 takes place in an elegant palace. The game has independent scrolling which allows the main character to move independently at his own pace.
Music and Sound
Not only does this game have a lot of music tracks, but they are good too. Unlike games like Dirty Larry Renegade Cop (with a single music track), this game has a different tune for each stage, as well as a tune for each boss! That's what I call above and beyond the call of duty. The melodies are atmospheric, serious, melancholic and catchy. As an example, level 3 has music that is dark and brooding, but conveys a subtle optimism that the tide might finally be turning in our protagonist's favor. As another example, the upbeat tune during the second stage boss encourages you to bash some heads.
Final reflection
Ninja Gaiden is widely accepted by Lynx owners as the best beat-em-up available. And there is no doubt why. Fun gameplay, great sound and graphics add up to a solid game. And unlike some *cough Batman cough*, the difficulty level is just right. So if you're in the mood for action, you can't go wrong with Ninja Gaiden.

Shadow of the Beast Atari Lynx
