Everything you need to know about Prophecy I The Viking Child

Atari Lynx Viking Child - Titulo del juego

Prophecy I The Viking Child, Can't a man fulfill his destiny in peace? Viking kid Brian was sitting at home when the Norse god Loki showed up (between seasons on Ghouls and Ghosts, natch). Concerned by the prophecy that Brian would become a powerful Viking leader, Loki kidnapped Brian's family, took them across the land, and challenged the young man to rescue them. If Brian can survive rescuing his family, he may one day fulfill this destiny.

Prophecy I The Viking Child Gameplay

This is the premise of Viking Child, an action-adventure game for the Atari Lynx, adapted from the European computer title. You play the role of Brian, who must explore many stages of the side-scrolling landscape in search of his family. Your family members have been hidden throughout the land, protected by both Loki's forces and a bit of deception. Only with agility and intelligence can you complete this mission.

When you boil the game down, Viking Child is essentially a run-and-jump quest game with some adventure game touches. Brian loses health over time and in fights with monsters, while each victory earns him money and points. Although the journey is very linear, there is plenty of terrain to explore, and houses, castles, and caves contain shops selling weapons and magic. Finally, you cannot exit a level without first discovering and defeating the level's boss monster, which is hidden from immediate view.

In the end, the combination of action and adventure is only partially successful, which hinders its appeal. As an action game, Viking Child is a bit slow; Brian walks and jumps at a modest pace, while the monsters run and jump everywhere. There are numerous fights, but they mainly consist of poking creatures with a dagger or throwing weapons at them. And while there's a lot to see, this game doesn't offer the sophistication of real RPGs. In its favor, Viking Child is a difficult game, with time limits and Loki's forces combining to reduce your health.

Graphics

Viking Child's graphics are quite well done. The adventure itself makes good use of earth tone colors and details. Brian and the creatures are drawn small enough to offer a good view of the surrounding area, without losing much detail. There are also some stylish static screens and plenty of cute touches throughout.

Music and Sound

The sounds, on the other hand, are an absolute minimum. There are some nice scores, but the game's few main sounds are just basic.

Final reflection

While Viking Child is an enjoyable diversion, it lacks the refinements necessary for greatness. The biggest appeal is exploring the land and trying to survive, but it should not be confused with an adventure game. Still, if you're looking for something that's a little more than your typical run-and-jump title, Viking Child is worth a try.
