Everything you need to know about Disney's Hercules

GameBoy Hercules - Titulo de inicio del juego - You Tube

On June 20, 1997, Disney's Hercules, also know as Disney's and Disney's Action Game Featuring Hercules, was released for PlayStation and Microsoft Windows, developed by Disney Interactive, inspired by the animated film. That same year, THQ released another game based on the film for game boy.

In the game, the plot of the animated film is slightly altered. Hercules, the son of Zeus, is stripped of his divinity and is forced to prove on earth that he is a true hero in order to regain his immortal status and join the other gods on Mount Olympus. To achieve this, he must complete several quests and fight many villains, and finally fight Hades, the ruler of the dead who is also responsible for his loss of immortality.

Brief History Disney's Hercules

Are you Hercules? the strongest man on Earth. After learning of his true origins, the powerful Zeus informs him that no mortal can join the gods unless he has proven himself a hero. Then, the adventure begins. Do whatever you must to pass each of your deadly tests, become a true hero and take your rightful place on Mount Olympus!

Are the gods watching?

Gameplay of Disneys Hercules

The game is primarily two-dimensional, but the player can often walk and cross paths or stairs in certain missions. There are ten levels and three difficulty modes: beginner, medium and herculean. The last two levels are only accessible on medium and Herculean difficulties. Additionally, three levels are races in which the player must advance and avoid obstacles.

To reach the end of the race, the player must avoid obstacles that follow one another, although he cannot stop or fight. Character health is measured in an energy bar that appears in the upper left corner of the screen throughout the game. Drinks are available to heal this bar and restore the character's life.

The player's main weapon is the sword, which has an extra ability known as "Gift of the Gods", in which the sword can be used as a superior weapon by directing elements towards enemies using the game controller. There are three attack modes: lightning, fireballs and sonic bombs. There is also an invincibility format in the game that exists as a helmet that grants the player a few seconds of invulnerability when activated.

Graphics

Graphically, the game is a mixed bag. They're not too interesting, but they're not entirely boring either. Some places have decent graphics, such as landscapes like large stone blocks and some trees, but otherwise things are a bit boring. Nothing smacks of bad design, and there aren't a ton of sets that you can't tell aren't sets, but nothing stands out much.

It's just a kind of indifference. That's not atypical for a Game Boy game, although by this point, just a year and a half removed from the Game Boy Color's release, many developers had learned to get a lot of mileage out of the little handheld. Tiertex was not necessarily one of them. The animation is fine, trying to imitate Virgin Interactive's somewhat fluid style, but not quite hitting the mark.

Music and Sound

In terms of music, you get the game's main theme, which plays during the title screen and attract mode, and from what I've read elsewhere, the rest of the music is original to the game. Unfortunately, even though there are 9 stages, there are only a couple of tunes that alternate between different levels, so you're limited to just that music. On the plus side, they're not annoying or bad songs, and they're kind of catchy. If you play enough, like I did, you might find yourself humming them.

That goes double if you're playing through the Super Game Boy, as the music is updated on that setting. Unlike many games, which only add borders and occasionally colored still images between levels, not only do the graphics get a boost here, but so does the music. The songs in the game are updated to sound more like what you're getting on the SNES, and it helps make the music more memorable. The sound effects, on the other hand, are acceptable, standard and little else.

Final reflection

At the end of the day, Disney's Hercules It's a nice distraction, but it's not something I'd like to spend more time on. It doesn't do anything well enough except for the Super Game Boy music, and the awkward animation, stilted level design, and somewhat clunky combat make for a reasonably solid experience. Like I said, if you're expecting an action game, you'll be disappointed. Instead, think of it as a slow-paced adventure with platforming elements, and you'll fare a little better. Still, this isn't a game I can wholeheartedly recommend, and I certainly wouldn't pay a lot for it.
