Everything you need to know about Home Alone

Game Gear Home Alone - Titulo del juego

If you were to look at the Genesis games that came to the Game Gear, you'll notice a pattern. I bet most of them were altered, even if some followed their console counterparts in the game. Home Alone might be one of the few examples of it being the same. In terms of gameplay, you get pretty much the same experience, but on a handheld. You get the downgrades in presentation and audio, but that's a given. This is surprisingly good, all things considered.

With the same developer at the helm, it still uses the same idea from the Genesis version that expands on what the NES and PC versions did. In the film, the Wet Bandits are robbing the neighborhood where the McCallister family lives. You take that as an idea of young Kevin walking across his block and stopping valuables from being taken and houses from flooding. Why this was not done, I do not know. But it sets up the game well.

Home Alone Gameplay

Home Alone on Game Gear is another side-scrolling game. Unlike most licensed properties at the time, it's not just another run-of-the-mill platformer, even though some licenses worked well with the genre. It has a run and gun kind of flavor. As with the other versions, you have control of Kevin McCallister. The goal of the game is to stop the Wet Bandits, Harry and Marv, from looting the neighborhood. Keep them away from them and deal damage to both of them until the police show up, which is how the game ends.

You have five houses that need to remain safe. They didn't plaster everyone with the same ideas and call it a day. There are different floors and sizes to highlight. It is easy to study everyone knows how to plan their attack. Don't go expecting it to be 100 percent. The layout is identical, but you won't find as many items in places as on the Genesis due to the elimination of some specific shelves.

Even with that, each one has a danger that affects not only the Bandits, but also Kevin. It's random and you don't know when to expect it. It changes every time he enters a house or is caught and hung from a hook. Harry and Marv will search for valuables. Once a loot meter fills completely, you lose the house and it's game over if everyone is lost.

Starting away from home

You will start the game outside Kevin's house. It starts with being on your sleigh, keeping an eye on the Bandits van while you beat up the snowmen scattered throughout the neighborhood. These carry parts and ammunition necessary for when you enter a house. The controls are simple as you can move fast with a charge.

It's limited, but there is a battery that will recharge it through snowmen and a very small charge boost when inside. Run and you will be very slow. If you get to a house before them, you can plan what traps you can place at the location. The material is very basic, but it is a way to inflict a pain meter with items like blowtorches. One advantage over the Genesis version is that the trap ammo is in the snowmen. Keeps it a little cooler when playing.

Regardless of the situation, you will find many things inside a house. Whether it's a hair dryer, rubber bands, or whatever, it will help. The controls are responsive. Kevin can jump and shoot weapons. They can be modified in the options before starting the race. You can pull tires down, but hold down and it starts.

A small problem is making sure you don't do it in a place with stairs, as it could cause you to go down instead of standing still. With items, you will pause your game a lot. This is where you can start assembling your weapons. Make sure you have the right type of items and have more than enough ammo. When it runs out, you have to dismantle it and assemble a new one.

Weapons

Each weapon of a specific ammo carrier has a specific number of shots it can take before moving on to the next clip. You'll start with a BB gun, but you'll need everything you picked up. Along with clip shots, weapons can also deal various damage depending on what you use. You will have to be attentive and mix it up. A hit will show an animation and a certain time that a bandit is on the ground or trapped in that animation. When the pain meter is full, you get a cheesy pun as they leave and head to the next house.

Rinse and repeat, that's what Home Alone is all about. It has two difficulty modes. Beginner is more of a warm-up type of game with 20 minutes until the police show up. It shows you how to assemble weapons and how to deal with bandits in a set path that's slow and easy to understand. There's fun in it, but there's also expert mode.

The big changes

The big changes are the van getting to the houses faster and the route they take being randomized along with the randomly scattered items. Weapon assembly is something you'll have to figure out on your own in this mode, but there are a few more things to even the odds in the 40-minute frenzy.

I only have a couple of complaints. The random aspect of expert mode is great, but it's a blessing and a curse. Expect times when you will be heading to the same pair of houses or there may not be enough ammo or parts needed for the weapon you desperately need. It can be a little frustrating, but it's not that common compared to what was seen in Genesis.

When outside, the frame rate becomes a little inconsistent, but that's more of a nitpick. It can crash a bit when there is too much on the screen with specific animations. Once again, he's nitpicking and it's with a couple of used weapons. The only other thing besides the audio is arriving late to a house and fearing where the bandits are. Sometimes it will feel very sudden when you are close to them, but that is not something you should be nervous about.

Graphics

Given the concept, Home Alone's graphics are not offensive. You get the downgrade, which isn't too terrible for being an early Game Gear title. Outside, it's basic with decent effects like snowmen getting run over. A couple of Christmas vibes, but that's it. The interiors of the houses are very useful. Each one has some details specific to them.

Little things that give them their identity, and they don't sacrifice it as much as you might think. Harry and Marv are portrayed fairly accurately. Kevin is well made apart from the height. All three have decent animation to their movement. Much more than the Genesis version. There are still some animations to capture the mood of the film. Not that many, but at least he tried. For an early release, this isn't bad. You can do much worse.

Music and Sound

I appreciate the effort, but Home Alone's audio is mediocre. Music is the best of this aspect. It tries to use the tunes from the Genesis version and puts them in 8-bit format. I know it's not the best audio chip in the world, but some of the tracks are very well done. My complaint is that it feels a bit rushed and the composition is hampered by it. There are a bit of sound effects, but it feels like three or four sounds with some alterations to make each one different in various variations. Give them credit for trying with the music, but this audio is weak sauce.

Final reflection

Home Alone isn't a huge recommendation for the Game Gear, but I wouldn't skip it. One of the best games for the system. I may not follow it step by step, but the gameplay is very well done by taking elements from the movie and using them with fantastic skill. Save the neighborhood.
