Everything you need to know about Micro Machines

Game Gear Micro Machines - Titulo del juego

Micro Machines is a top-down racing game that allows you to control a lot of different tiny vehicles on various courses. This Game Gear version is one of the great Micro Machines versions, like others programmed, published and distributed by Codemasters, it arrived in Europe and the US. Extremely addictive air racing game and unique legend.

The game is based on Galoob's incredibly popular Micro Machines range of toys, which have permeated everything in the past, from store shelves to frustrating Marv in Home Alone.

Micro Machines were part of many children's growing up in the '80s and '90s, and a game based on the little vehicles was a must-have for any fan and also a lot of fun.

If you're bored of racing Formula 1 cars, rally cars or MotoGP bikes in their natural habitats, the Micro Machines series might be for you. These are miniature races that represent particular types of vehicles on a particular terrain around the house. Sports car racing on the desk, 4x4s in the sandbox, Formula 1 cars on a pool table, etc.

These levels were full of variation. The Snooker tables have the track painted on, although this is open to drift (as are most levels), and had you running through pockets and the edge of the table. Tanks also ran, with the ability to shoot your opponent if they got directly in front of you. Desktop levels include folders to jump, pencil sharpeners to avoid, and plenty of sight gags in the open task.

Viewed from above with small graphics, races include up to 4 cars. In single-player challenge mode, you race through the 21 tracks in a set order, selecting your 3 opponents as you go (adding a good amount of strategy - ideally, you should aim to eliminate the best CPU cars from the beginning), eliminating one after every third race (assuming you can finish in the top 2 of a race within your 3 lives). If you win 3 races in a row without using a continuum, you get a time trial race that can earn you an extra life.

The real innovation of the game was in the multiplayer modes. You started with 4 points each, and when one car moves forward enough to force the other car off the screen, the slider moves in its favor. Once you reached the end (which involved beating them 4 times more than they beat you), you win the level, although if 3 laps have been completed, the person leading at that point is declared the winner, with a death tiebreaker sudden if the scores are level. 9 of the tracks are available in this mode, although you can also play this Head to Head system as a 1-player game on all tracks.

Micro Machines Gameplay

Micro Machines starts off by letting you choose your character, there are quite a few of them and your job is to eliminate them from future racers by beating them. However, it is the setting and atmosphere this game offers that will transport you and your imagination to the breakfast table antics of eating your cereal and pushing a car or floating a boat in the bathroom like everyone else did. children at that time.

The thing is, most racing games of the time were trying to be realistic, and at the time, these things really looked like they don't look like today. Micro Machines was set in fictional locations, but they were familiar and fun.

Speedboat racing around the bathtub while avoiding bubbles and swirls… check. Or how about racing Formula 1 cars around a pool table while shoving your opponents into pockets to slow their progress and ensure your own victory… check.

There was so much variety in the game that it's hard not to like it from the start. The variety not only in the courses but also in the vehicles is what sets it apart as well. Sports cars on school desks, helicopters in the garden and battle tanks that, although slow, allow you to shoot your three opponents and beat them to the finish line.

The game has it all and just forces you to play it again. Two players is fun, but beating your opponent sitting next to you is a simple matter, run further up the screen and you get the point, best of three and you win. Simple and effective, but it's the single-player mode that's so fun.

Graphics

I think the graphical level of this game surpasses most other Game Gear racing games. The tracks have tons of detail and are very crisp, clear, and easy on the eyes. Small details like nuts and bolts scattered across the track on a workbench to crumbs and waffle pieces scattered on a breakfast table course really add to the game. But it's not too distracting and you can easily concentrate on the race. Overall, the graphics are very good for the system and time period the game was created in, which was the 90s.

Music and Sound

But what really drags down the sound score is the lack of music in the game. The game's logo screen has a cool tune and some suspenseful music while you choose your modes, but there's no music while you run. To me, this is a big missing part of the game that shouldn't have been overlooked. Sometimes races will seem isolated and lonely without music

Final reflection
