Ristar Game Gear
Everything you need to know about Ristar
People now know who the shooting star is, and the game is frequently among the list of Sega properties that have fans clamoring for a sequel. More Ristar would be great, but remember NIGHTS Journey of Dreams? Or Golden Ax Beast Rider. Yes, maybe it's best that we leave things as they are so that today's Sega tarnish another beloved but neglected franchise.
Ristar Gameplay
Using Objects
You can use grabbed objects to swing, and our colorful protagonist uses his grab to hit enemies and defeat them. Aside from this gimmick, Ristar is a pretty basic platformer. New to the series is Ristar's ability to collect stars in each level that function similarly to Mario's coins or Sonic's rings. Collecting a hundred of these grants you an extra life, and you'll need everything you can get because this is a pretty demanding and challenging game.
Although the stages share common themes with those of the Genesis game, the levels are all new. The platforming is a little more difficult here, and the stage designs are more maze-like. Additionally, this game focuses more on letting you use items than its 16-bit counterpart. You can pick up spears thrown by enemies which, when thrown, stick into the wall and allow you to jump off it.
Enemies and encounters with the Final Bosses
Other enemies drop hats that can be thrown as a projectile attack. This game focuses more on alternate routes with more technical obstacles, and I really enjoyed the increased challenge here. The only aspect of the game that I found to be a downgrade compared to the original release are the boss encounters. These felt rushed and mostly uninteresting. The final boss is pretty good, but the others disappoint me a little.
Graphics
Beyond that platformer relic, the game is fantastic. Ignoring the Genesis comparisons (which are admittedly hard to make), the Ristar handheld looks great, simplifying background details to keep the foreground fairly close to the Genesis game. The game adapts well to the small screen and is able to make everything look big while still offering a fun and playable experience (and avoiding the pitfalls of Sonic 2 and others).
While they're a far cry from the Genesis version, it's still above and beyond anything I thought the Game Gear was capable of. The backgrounds are very detailed and some even feature a good amount of animation. Ristar, as well as the enemies, each feature a significant number of frames of animation. It's really impressive, and in some sequences the action moves almost as fast as in Sonic the Hedgehog.
Music and Sound
However, I don't know how you can still enjoy the music, because although the Game Gear does an admirable job with the game's visuals, the music is quite lacking, even more so if you enjoyed the 16-bit soundtrack. The system simply can't handle the bright, richly layered audio of the original, and it shows.
Final reflection
Audio complaints aside, the music is still decent, and the Game Gear Ristar has a lot more going for it than it lacks. Let's face it: no one is going to choose the Game Gear Ristar over the Genesis, but Ristar is not a Highlander, and there doesn't need to be just one. Game Gear Ristar is an engaging and fun platformer in its own right and is among the best games available on the system. You won't hear him inviting you to play with him from the Game Gear's speakers, but you'll definitely want to join in on his portable outing.
