Star Wars Game Gear
Everything you need to know about Star Wars
Star Wars Game Gear is a classic game. Period. It represents the foundation that all Lucasfilm games must go through. There are two 'Star Wars' games for the NES, 1987 and 1991, unfortunately I have never played the 1987 version, but this version is an incredible game that deserves my full attention. It's challenging, fun, challenging, interesting and well, challenging.
Star Wars gameplay
Star Wars has a lot of exciting scenes, and for a side-scrolling shooter that's been around for over a decade, it still holds up today. This is because it's more immediately appealing than the rather shaky outings the franchise has had on more current systems!
Your default character is Luke Skywalker, a young man from the desert planet of Tatooine. The first section of the game is pretty simple. You drive through the desert in your landspeeder, searching for clues as to where one of your droids, R2-D2, has disappeared. There are several caves scattered across the landscape, each with dangers and delights.
For example, one of them may have vicious enemies inside, but contain some useful pickup trucks. Along the way, you can pick up a lightsaber, a blaster pistol upgrade, etc. Your initial goal is the airport, where you'll embark on a journey destined to culminate in the Death Star, and that's where everything really kicks into high gear.
The battle system, on foot, is incredibly simple. There are several enemies to face, which you can easily dispatch with any weapon you possess. On top of this, there are several non-living obstacles, such as garbage grinders and cave spikes, which spell DOOM, and require skill to avoid, not just guts. A complex aspect is the flight missions: they include navigation of a huge asteroid field and your escape from the Death Star in the Millennium Falcon, which offers a solid challenge.
There are two difficulties here: Cadet and Jedi. Cadet is the easy mode; you will encounter fewer enemies/more health buffs, your character will be stronger, and you will not take fall damage. Jedi is the hardest option, and the one I recommend taking as soon as you've gotten used to the game; you take fall damage, pickups are pretty sparse, and character/enemy vitality is balanced. Most of the overall difficulty is pretty low, but there are occasional sparks of madness; the battle in the Death Star Hangar towards the end of the game is frustrating, ridiculous, and silly, no matter what difficulty level you're playing on.
I should also mention that every important task you perform will ultimately be rewarded if you do it well; some of these are mandatory, such as taking out the Tractor Beam on the Death Star, but others are optional; Don't feel obligated to meet with your team, although it is recommended, as they make your life much easier.
For example, Han Solo, equipped with a very powerful blaster, can be controlled if you encounter him, and Obi-Wan Kenobi not only passes you a lightsaber if you encounter him, but can also resurrect dead characters and ensure that you stay upper part. Anyway, each task has a certain percentage value, and achieving the full 100% gives you the true ending upon completion.
Graphics
Not bad for a fairly old game. Although the character designs are largely unadventurous, they remain faithful to the film and the backgrounds are imaginative. I rarely experience slowdown and overall this is good 8-bit fare, aside from the unfortunate way your character dies; The Star Wars franchise was never overly violent or controversial, but one expects a little more that character X will suddenly disappear and leave behind some kind of explosive disk. Yuck. Well, Greedo shot first.
Music and Sound
The music is more or less an electronic reworking of John Williams' immortal score, choosing a more mechanical approach over orchestral brilliance. There are also some added catchy melodies that are mainly used on the Death Star and add a sparkle here and there. Perfect. The mad dash to the Death Star Hangar I mentioned earlier is only made bearable by the remix of the title theme playing in the background, which is done in top-notch fashion.
The SFX is pretty decent at first, combining a lot of little explosions and gunshots, but unfortunately everything is recycled from everything else, as you'll discover as you progress through the game; Destroying an enemy with your blaster will trigger the exact same sound as a garbage disposal hitting, or your character dying, or basically any other destruction-related activity. The section is marked by this defect, but is otherwise acceptable.
Final reflection
Overall, the gameplay was the best. Not having a tasty arsenal to drool over was a slight disappointment, but what's there is adequate.
