Everything you need to know about Alien Syndrome
Alien Syndrome (????????????) Sega released the arcade game in 1987. It uses Sega System 16 hardware. In the game, players control Ricky and Mary as they fight aliens while trying to rescue hostages in a limited time period. There are multiple weapons available, as well as two players.
Alien Syndrome has low production values compared to other Master System arcade adaptations. It doesn't have 2P co-op or a panning camera, and it doesn't work with the Mega Drive's controller (since the Master System's D-pad is horrible for diagonals).
Brief History Alien Syndrome
Year: 2089. A mysterious extraterrestrial fleet invades space occupied by humans. They are called Alien Syndrome, “Alien Syndrome”, they are different from anything humanity has encountered. Their spaceships are as big as cities. They have weapons powerful enough to destroy planets. With the entire human race threatened, the alien syndrome must be stopped.
A battalion called Earth Command Troopers has been designated by humanity to attack the alien fleet. But they are captured and taken hostage. Desperate, the Ground Command asks for volunteers to go on a suicide rescue mission.
Only two soldiers are brave enough to step forward. They are Ground Command soldiers RICKY and MARY, the most evil combat soldiers in the galaxy!
Armed only with a short-range combat rifle, they must infiltrate the seven alien ships, rescue the hostages and escape... alive!
The odds are against you. Aliens can appear at any time… anywhere. The hostages depend on RICKY and MARY… and on you!

Alien Syndrome Gameplay
Rescuing the hostages aboard each alien ship, defeating the Alien Boss before a time bomb blows the ship to pieces, and getting out is the goal of Alien Syndrome.
There are seven spaceships. Each ship is a game round:
- Round 1: Calliope
- Round 2: Clio
- Round 3: Erato
- Round 4: Euterpe
- Round 5: Melpomene
- Round 6: Thalia
- Round 7: Urania
Alien Syndrome is an overhead run and gun game. You run around, pick up weapons, and shoot any idiot aliens that try to get in your way. Your weapons are amazing and can make fights much easier if you have them. Your standard weapon is a bit underwhelming and you lose your special weapon if you get hit, so you really need to conserve those special weapons.
You have to pass the level and find all the hostages that the aliens have captured. You have to do this before time runs out. It's very exciting and sometimes you won't be able to get all the hostages out alive. After saving everyone, it's time to fight a boss. The bosses are great, but they are much more frustrating than they should be. Between the race against time, having no continuity, and losing your weapons when you die, Alien Syndrome can be a frustrating and unforgiving game. If you're up for a challenge, Alien Syndrome is a great game to have on your X68000. However, there are easier ways to get this game, so don't think this is the absolute version you must have if you just want to play Alien Syndrome.
Graphics
It's not the most visual game, and everything seems quite flat despite the aerial view you encounter. Each stage looks more or less the same, with only the color scheme of the floor you go through changing as you progress! The aliens themselves are well thought out, but given time and limitations, you will find that the details leave a lot to be desired and even the weapons are not.
Music and Sound
Standard action fare, the music level is somewhere between upbeat and dancing as you progress through the game. But be prepared because the game doesn't offer much to listen to as the music for each stage plays in an endless stream! The sound effects are also your usual assortment of explosions, growls, screeches and gunshots, again your usual fare of action game sounds.
Final reflection
While not the most original of action games, Sega did a good job creating Alien Syndrome in terms of addictive levels. With the lack of detail, and even the lack of sound and music, you will find that Alien Storm leaves a lot to be desired in the audiovisual department, but does a good job on the most important part. The game! Worth a little of your time and a couple of dollars in quarters, Alien Syndrome is a good choice when you're looking for an above-average action platform.
