Everything you need to know about Altered Beast
Altered Beast It was programmed, published and distributed by Sega, it was released throughout Europe and the United States in 1989, and in that same year it was released in Brazil, of course, by Tec Toy. We are facing one of the great SEGA classics, and this version of Altered Beast Master System is a video game in which we control a centurion who died in battle. This centurion was brought back from the dead by Zeus to rescue his daughter Athena from Neff, the evil Lord of the Hidden World. Also in this is the most complete version that was made for Sega Mega Drive with the same title Altered Beast.
Brief History Altered Beast
In the middle of the cold night, a heartbreaking scream is heard. A noble warrior is raised from his deathbed to carry out the orders of Zeus, the god of gods. His daughter Athena has been kidnapped, and only this noble centurion can save her from the terrible clutches of Neff.
The player fights against undead and demonic hordes, controlling the hero who changes form during the match. You have to overcome several levels to rescue the kidnapped goddess.
While we travel through the lands of the kingdom we will find a type of wolf (pink) that we must kill. Once dead, they will release a small pink ball, and if we manage to catch it, our body will be genetically modified to transform into a very powerful beast that will vary depending on the level of the game we are in. During the tour we will use fists and kicks (in human form) and when we achieve the beast state we will use the special attack of each one that touches you in the level, generally they will be ranged attacks such as energy balls

Altered Beast gameplay
To advance in the game, the player must kill all creatures (mainly werewolves, minotaurs, and skeletons) that appear on the screen. The centurion can use kicks and punches in normal state. Every time the player collects a flashing power-up, he transforms into a werewolf, a dragon, depending on the level we are at. For example, if we are at level 1 of the game after collecting all the pink power-ups, the centurion transforms into a werewolf.
Once transformed, the player cannot return to his original centurion form unless they manage to defeat you or reach the end of a level and Neff will extract the orbs from his body. The game ends when the centurion loses all his energy and is eaten by a creature. The game ends when all levels have been passed.
Altered Beast is a side-scrolling, platformer, and beat ?em up game. The player can punch, kick and jump. Up to two players can play at the same time. Each player controls a centurion, who fights undead creatures and monsters in an environment that resembles ancient Greece, originally with five levels, in a cemetery, the underworld, a cavern, Neff's palace and the base in the city of Dis.
One of the enemies, a two-headed white wolf. When defeated, he releases a Spirit Ball, an orb of power that increases the strength and size of the player's character. Three orbs turn the centurion into a beast, which in the original version were a werewolf, a thunder dragonman, a werebear, a weretiger, and the most powerful golden werewolf. Each beast has its own abilities, such as the dragon's flight and lightning, and the bear's petrification. After becoming the beast, the character can face the final level boss, which upon defeat causes Neff to appear and remove the transformation orbs.

- Level 3 boss? Fire Dragon: A gigantic fire-breathing dragon that we will have to defeat.
- Level 4 boss? Rhino: The evil Rhinoceros who has a very bad mood and is also very fast, and is also the final boss of the game, since being shorter in this version for the Master System, it ends with the defeat of this being. .
Graphics
Altered Beast had impressive graphics back then, but in retrospect they're really average. A big improvement over 8-bit consoles like the NES and Master System due to larger sprites and more colors. However. It's actually just an older version of the Arcade version, but they look much better than the Turbografx-16 version, the only other 16-bit version of the game on a home system.
There is a lot of detail given to the player sprites. The characters are well detailed down to the last muscle and the stronger they get the more detail they are given due to the size of the muscles the guy has, the sprites look pretty decent but the best sprites are the bosses and beasts.
Enemies are given a lesser amount of detail and some are given more than others. The enemies, like the graveyard guardians, are some of the best in the game. Their decomposing corpses rampage, shattering tombstones and dealing massive amounts of damage. Others, like the zombies and two-headed dogs, look terrible and should have been worked on more.
Like I said, the beasts look cooler and are probably the best in the game, next to the bosses. The beasts look like what they were supposed to be, which is a good start. The human-beast transformation sequence is fantastic. You get a short movie of the human transforming into your beast, the footage of the man turning into a wolf is the best and is a great example of the power of 16-bit graphics processors even in their early days.
Music and Sound
Unfortunately, the tunes in Altered Beast are limited due to the size of the games and even more so due to the fact that the music repeats throughout the levels. For example, levels 2 and 4 have the same music and the title theme is the same as levels 3 and 5. The two best tunes are the title theme and the level one music. The beast music is very catchy and will stay stuck in your head long after you play this game. Understandably, the music quality is below average, but the actual tunes are really good, so I can forgive, plus the system itself had a faulty sound processor in the first place, so great music wasn't expected. fantastic anyway.
The sound effects consist of explosions and thuds in battle as you bang the brains out of some zombies. However, they are very loud and annoying due to the fact that they become incredibly repetitive after the second level.
Final reflection
Overall, Altered Beast is a very memorable classic game. Despite some flaws, it's fun to play from time to time and something you'll want to finish again when you have a spare half hour with nothing to do.
