Everything you need to know about California Games
California Games was developed by Epyx and released to almost every platform that was available in 1987. Two years later, it came to the Master System, ported by Sega itself. For those who have never played the game, California Games is a compilation of 6 unconventional sports games: half-pipe (skateboarding), footbag, surfing, skating, BMX (dirt), and frisbee (frisbee).

California Games Gameplay
From the beginning, in the main menu, the game allows you to play a sport, compete in all sports, or compete only in selected ones. This means it allows the player to jump right into the action. Playing this game just means that whatever your score is in a given event, you will always get a first place trophy for it.
This leads to the next aspect of the game: multiplayer. California Games allows up to 8 players to compete at the same time. Since the Master System has 'only' two controller ports, players must take turns when competing in each of the sporting events.
Add that to the option to enter the name and select one of nine sponsors for each player, and you can understand why the California Games were a popular party game.
The game has precise and responsive controls and each and every sport is easy to learn and difficult to master, although some of them have more depth than others, they are almost equal when it comes to the fun factor. Since each event has its own rules and objectives and there are 6 of them, let's divide this post into 6 subsections and briefly describe each sport.
Graphics
Enough about the gameplay options, let's talk about graphics. While it's not the most attractive version from California Games, it sure looks pretty good for a Master System game. It's colorful, with great animations and a ton of different effects. The user interface and menus don't hide their age, as the bright neon colors and patterns mixed with geometric shapes are visually what the 80s were all about.
Music and Sound
The sound is excellent, with a song for each event and each menu, they really add to the overall 80s feel of the game. The sound effects are nothing special, and they all sound as they should. There are also times before each event that an announcer says a phrase or word, but the quality is so poor that it is only possible to understand what is being said because it is written on the screen.
As for Easter eggs, this game has a lot of them, like this sound, which appears randomly. Some other Easter eggs are not based on the player's luck and are revealed when some requirements are met. They will not be listed or explained as it would spoil the fun.
Final reflection
This is a great game, it featured some elements that were quite innovative for its time, such as game advertisements (sponsors), 8-player competition, and a never-before-seen BMX stunt. It's a game that everyone can enjoy, as the controls are simple, which is good for beginners, and all the sports offer some depth for experienced players. For all that, this game is a must-have for anyone looking for a great multiplayer experience on the Master System.
