The color palette of Master System It is shown in a whimsical way in Castle of Illusion, giving a casual impression and bright colors. It is the same as Sonic's a year before, but what is really important is that it is clear that the original game engine and the console still had a little power left to squeeze. In Land of Illusion we can see that the original game engine and the console's capabilities are still in good shape. The levels, completely localized, themed and differentiated from each other (forest, library, clock tower, candy factory, to name a few), are charming and welcoming. The level design, colors, atmosphere and enemies combine to form an original and beautiful platform game.
The 6 scenes in the game are as good as the second part of the Illusion series. The animations of Mickey, who can perform a wide range of actions, from crouching to carrying objects, climbing stairs or trying to regain his balance, are praised for their great dynamism and veracity. “Token animations” (animations that continuously show the character's actions even when they are at rest) were the first games to offer them, according to veterans. Depending on the situation, some of the characters' languages can be funny, childish, or even sad.
Behind every door lies a different illusory world. Each world is a labyrinth filled with myriads of creatures and traps, all created by Mizrabel and his masters of deception. Good luck!
The Enchanted Forest
Enter a bright forest where squat trees crawl, tulips spit poisonous germs, and spiders attack from their huge, sticky webs. Carefully jump through the falling leaves. Be careful of vampires and horrible caterpillars!
The land of toys
Go through a maze of animated toys. Take down prancing chess pieces and juggling clowns! Duck or jump over the roaring toy planes! Hopefully you can find a shortcut? Or you will end up caught in a trap!
The candy factory
Huge canola donuts will chase you, and gelatinous cakes will block your path. Knock down huge amounts of chocolate and follow the stream of gelatinous beans into a puddle of milk! This world of delicious delicacies is full of terrifying traps!
Library
Huge books and towering pencils? Is this the room of a giant? Maybe, so be very careful! Jump across the bookshelves and jump over the moths. Dip into a cup of tea and float on the sugar cubes!
the tower clock
Are you ready to go on an expedition 4 through the ticking tower? Swing on the giant pendulums and jump on the rotating gears. Be careful with your head when you climb on the rotating screws. Get out before the grandfather clock catches you in its hands!
the castle
Now you are in the castle where armed knights will attack, and terrifying ghosts will fly towards you. Is it located a step away from Mizrabel? and Mime. Don't give up!
Graphics
Castle of Illusion looks positively lovely. Mickey is well drawn and animated and that goes for most of the enemies as well. Seeing him march forward with that happy smile on his face never gets old, as does the worried look Mickey gives as he crouches or balances on an edge. There are also the little details, like seeing a boss wiping his brow or toy airplanes remaining precariously in the air. However, the highlight here is the backgrounds. They are full of details and moving parts and are also quite varied. Right on the first screen in the forest, we have purple plants that form little hearts, while later there are swinging bells in Toyland and spinning gears in the tower. Candy Land is my personal favorite of the bunch, looking as lush as a cake-filled setting can get.
Music and Sound
The soundtrack is generally as whimsical as you'd imagine without becoming overtly cheesy. Toyland's music, for example, has a slight parade vibe that complements the marching toy soldiers well, the storm level tune reminded me of Bionic Commando for some reason, while the castle track is quite haunting. As with the visuals, my favorite piece of music has to come from the candy level, which even seems to feature some tap dancing. The sound effects are of the expected bouncy variety and do their job without much fuss. The only problem I have with the audio is that it can sound a little canned and tinny. However, based on the soundtrack's strengths, this is not overtly detrimental.
Final reflection
In the introduction I mentioned the context of the release of Castle of Illusion. It was one of the games that showed the world what Sega's new console was capable of before Sonic took the stage and stole the show. In that sense, and also what it meant for the company's relationship with Disney and for licensed games in general, Castle of Illusion is an important title. Fortunately, the game's appeal not only stems from a historical perspective, but it's also still a lot of fun. Castle of Illusion looks and sounds great, plays great, and has a lot to offer any platform fan. It may be short and not very original, but when a game is as polished and enjoyable as this one, that doesn't matter too much.
