Everything you need to know about Hook
The game Hook, based on the movie of the same name, is one of the best movie titles for games. Although it is only loosely based on the movie, it wasn't made just for the game rights and money. Hook is a great action/adventure game.
The main reason this game is so good is because Peter must find his way through Neverland until he reaches Hook's ship. The adventure spans 10 huge levels. Get ready for some amazing side scrolling action!
Hook Gameplay
You start the game as Fat Peter doing an obstacle course to get your real sword back, and at the end Rufio is waiting to see if you're the real Pan. Then, it's off to the forest, snowy mountains, caves, and finally to the docks where Captain Hook awaits him. There are ten levels in total with seven bosses. Some are easy and some are difficult, but in general, most only take three hits each, and they're gone. Later bosses require six hits before walking the plank.
Peter walks a little slowly, not like he's gliding or anything, but he moves a little slowly, like he's not in a big hurry. Jumping is also the same, and gives the game a really floating feel. It doesn't bother me because Pan is fluent in what he does, and it's never really a problem. If you want it fast, try the Master System version. There, he's on drugs or something. In the Genesis game, just hold the hit button and start running. Other than this, the controls are fine for me and do the job quite well.
Graphics
In the graphics area, the game is nothing great, but passable. This was a fairly early generation SNES game, so you can't really expect much. When Sony obtained the rights to video game adaptations of the film, the deal they made did not include the actors' likenesses appearing in the game. (Then again, maybe this is a good thing.
I don't want to imagine a little Robin Williams jumping around the screen with the help of an even smaller Julia Roberts...) So, since the programmers couldn't use the actors, they used a cartoon-style design for all the characters .
The character sprites are small, but very well animated. (I love the way Peter's hair and clothes move in the wind when he's flying.) Each character has their own unique facial expression when attacking, standing, etc. It gives a lot of diversity to the characters. I also liked the look of the levels. When you arrive at Hook's pirate town near the end of the game, there are a lot of details. It almost looks like the same set from the movie.
Music and Sound
However, the area where this game really shines is the music. Sony realized that one of the best parts of the film was John Williams' orchestral score. Therefore, much of the music from the film has been recreated for the game. The music really takes advantage of the SNES's stereo sound capabilities, delivering a very dramatic and symphonic feel that perfectly captures the mood of each level. At the time, I thought this was the best music I'd ever heard produced on the SNES. The sound effects are also strong. From the smacking sound of Peter's sword to the realistic roars of enemy tigers, you'll be engaged.
Final reflection
Although it is marketed as a children's game, it is complicated in places and can quickly become frustrating, but for those who persevere, it is a fun game that is worth the effort even for a player who owns many other platforms. action titles.
