Mortal Kombat Master System
Everything you need to know about Mortal Kombat
All great dynasties start small. Mortal Kombat was no different. What started out as Midway's answer to Capcom's popular Street Fighter series soon became something bigger, something with its own signature charisma. Not many games can claim the fame that Mortal Kombat has.
He was solely responsible for the founding of today's Entertainment Software Rating Board (more commonly known and abbreviated as ESRB to most). The soccer moms hated it, but everyone else loved it and continued to fill their rooms one after the other. So it's no surprise that when it was brought to home systems it was well received.
Mortal Kombat Gameplay
You have seven fighters to choose from: Johnny Cage, Kano, Rayden, Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero and Sonya. Whoever you prefer, you fight all the other Kombatant (including yourself), then face the powerful Goro and finally Shang Tsung himself. The concept is simple but that's what made Mortal Kombat so much fun. It's very universally friendly. Even if you have never played a fighting game before, you can pick up this game, learn the very basic moves that each character has and take your fighter through the tournament.
Each has some of their own special moves that aren't available to anyone (Sub-Zero can freeze, Liu Kang can throw fireballs), as well as their own signature Fatality move. Kills are finishing moves that a Kombatant uses to not only finish off his opponent, but also kill him. Fatality's moves were a vital part of Mortal Kombat's fame (and, at the same time, controversy). They were the first in the fighting game genre and have their roots in this game.
The story of Mortal Kombat is another thing it is known for. The Mortal Kombat tournament takes place once every generation. Earthrealm's greatest fighters gather on the island of Shang Tsung to fight for the protection of Earth. Shang Tsung and his minions need ten consecutive victories in Mortal Kombat (as set by the Elder Gods) to enter Earthrealm and conquer it. It just so happens that our heroes are involved in the tenth tournament. Thus our salvation is in the hands of a few scattered individuals.
This is the ultimate test of human strength and endurance. Each Kombatant has an ending that may or may not have happened in the Mortal Kombat story: it is never revealed until the next game who exactly lives and dies, or what events actually happened. But this is where it all began, the initial fight for our salvation against the demons of Outworld. Now, not many will play Mortal Kombat for its story, at least the game isn't just mindlessly killing each other. It has a purpose.
Graphics
The look and graphics of the game stand out because they used digitized real-life character actors. The character models in the arcade version of Mortal Kombat look nice and realistic with some decent details and motion-captured animation sprites, which is pretty impressive for a game released in 1992. Each character looks unique and recognizable, especially Johnny Cage, whose character design was taken from Jean-Claude Van Damme's character in the 1988 film Bloodsport.
The set designs are fair, from courtyards to temple gates to Shang Tsung's throne room to dark, dank dungeons. These are mainly due to decoration more than anything, although the famous Pit stage takes place on a high bridge from which you can knock your opponent hundreds of feet to finish them off when you've worn them down enough. All stages are very well detailed and fit the feel and theme of the game.
Music and Sound
As with the graphics, the quality of the sounds transferred to the PC version of the game is absolutely perfect (provided you have a decent sound card, of course). Every punch, growl, screech, scream, blood splatter, head tear, and fireball is there, as is the fantastic music.
Final reflection
Overall, Mortal Kombat is a good arcade fighting game that, by today's standards, feels pretty short and simple compared to all the others. The fighting style itself is fine, although it has a few glitches here and there, and the challenge is ridiculously high. However, I think the arcade version is still the best as it runs much smoother and has the best gameplay feel.
Home console ports have been created for many systems, perhaps the ideal being the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis, but for the perfect arcade experience it's worth checking out as part of the Mortal Kombat Arcade Kollection, which can be downloaded via from Xbox Live Arcade for Xbox 360. Decent fighting, challenge, good visuals and lots of blood and gore make this the one to check out if that's what you like to see in a fighting game.

Batman Returns Master System
In 1991, Sega released a Master System version of Batman Returns. The programming was carried out by Aspect, responsible for the game systems. It is a platform and action game similar to its version for the older sister, but the development of the game is completely different.
Hook Master System
The game Hook, based on the movie of the same name, is one of the best movie titles for games. Although it is only loosely based on the movie, it wasn't made just for the game rights and money. Hook is a great action/adventure game.
