Everything you need to know about The Incredible Hulk
In 1994, the American company Gold launched an exclusive game for the Sega and Super Nintendo consoles and under license from Marvel Comics, The Incredible Hulk. The Incredible Hulk was released for the Megadrive, Super Nintendo and its little 8-bit sisters the MasterSystem and the portable Game Gear, as you can imagine in 1994 when 32-bit consoles began to appear, it was increasingly rare for new games to come out in Master Console System.
The Incredible Hulk Gameplay
The game is typical of platforms and action, we will control the Hulk throughout five levels to finish off our evil archenemy. The path will be full of his minions who will try to finish us off. In addition to these, there will be bosses to defeat at the end of each level.
The character has two energy bars, one made up of hearts that are lives and another green that measures our Gamma level. If this bar runs out we will become Bruce Banner who will have a weapon to defend himself, but who will perish with a single blow. enemy.
The game does not bring anything new or original, US Gold did not put effort into this cartridge, although it also has positive things. Without a doubt, what stands out the most is the design and animation of the Hulk, I find it sublime. But overall, the game is pretty average and has a lot of inaccuracy in collisions, especially when it comes to killing enemies, making it impossible to kill them without taking damage, although perhaps this was intentional since Hulk always receives a lot of attacks from his enemies while destroying everything and in this game we can receive a lot of damage while we are Hulk and the Gamma bar does not end, the important thing is to find elements to fill the bar or finish the level before becoming Bruce.
Graphics
They are a direct downgrade from the Genesis version, the animations are pretty good but some are a bit choppy due to the obvious downgrade. I think it would have been better if the sprites were completely redrawn (or maybe if the original version used 3D models, they could have digitized them directly instead of downscaling the Genesis version). The backgrounds are pretty generic, but not bad (the sky is completely blue, they should have included some clouds or the buildings in the original), all the villains look as they should. Even the comic panels are pretty good even when scaled down.
Music and Sound
The original game's music wasn't too memorable, so it obviously doesn't fare much better. Even if it had an FM version it wouldn't have sounded memorable, and you know you've botched it badly when not even an FM remix would do a song justice.
Final reflection
Platforms and action, with a scroll that is not always to the right, since we will go in all directions and we will find various elements along the way that will help us complete the adventure. And a little more to say. What works best is the character and the low level of difficulty that makes the challenge not frustrating and you can have a fun time, but it will not be a game that you will remember for a long time.
The game could have been much better and more accurate than the Genesis/SNES original, but I think that would have required more time and that's something that those programmers unfortunately didn't have much of. Instead, they gave us a broken, unfinished game that feels like you're fighting the controls in order to progress. This game makes you want to turn into the Hulk and crush him with your gorilla-sized fists.
