Everything you need to know about WonderBoy

Master System Wonder Boy - Titulo de inicio del juego

wonder boy was one of Sega's main creations in the mid-eighties, just before the appearance of Alex Kidd and the even more popular sonic the hedgehog. It spawned about five sequels that began on Sega's 8-bit console and ended in Sega Mega Drive/Genesis in the mid-nineties. He has never been reborn since his death in 1994 with "Monster World 4." The games used to be platformers with some RPG touches, but fans remember it for its fantasy sword fights in which you controlled a sword-wielding boy warrior who faced off against a variety of monsters and demons.

However, the first game in the series was very different from its sequels, mainly because it did not involve characters like Knights and Dragons who followed the traditional medieval trend, but instead starred a humble boy in a grass skirt armed with only An unlimited amount of hammers!

Anyway, the game's story uses the same old story of a bad boy kidnapping another boy's girlfriend, a plot that is overused today. Anyway, for some reason, this evil dark lord with the ability to change his head has kidnapped the boy Wonder's girlfriend and is now on a quest to get her back. He has to undertake a long and dangerous journey through valleys, forests and caves to rescue his partner and also collect the dolls that seem to resemble his girlfriend in some way. (Maybe he likes voodoo or something.) That's the story, not very original but decent enough. Platform games don't need good stories.

Brief History Wonder Boy

What's going on

Just when things were going really well with you and your girlfriend, Tanya, a thug of the king of the forest had to go kidnap her and hide her.

Where is your pretty little girl locked up? Well, that's part of the problem. You really have no idea.

And since she could be anywhere, you'll have to look everywhere.

You will go through deep, dark forests. You will cross infinite oceans. Climb treacherous slopes.

You will explore exploding volcanoes.

Treacherous glaciers. And even walk through clouds, some of which will support you and some of which will not.

But you will never be totally alone. Unfortunately. There will always be some nasty little woodland creature, sea monster or creepy bug trying to kill you.

You will have to learn to be skilled with an axe. It's your only form of defense. Other than just running for it.

And if everything starts to seem hopeless, take heart. You always have your guardian angel who can make you virtually invincible.

So say goodbye to people. And don't worry about packing a lunch. There are a lot of things growing wild where you go.

Area, Round, Checkpoint, Location.

The game consists of 10 AREAS:

An AREA with 4 rounds, the King's mansion? that appears at the end of the 4 rounds.

A round with 4 checkpoints, the goal? appearing at the end of the round.

Tom-Tom's course contains 14 locations.

There are fourteen different locations that you will have to pass through in your search. And forty rounds for the entire game. Some locations will be repeated. Others, like the forest, will change as you progress.

There are all fourteen locations, but since some locations are repeated, they won't always be in this exact order.

  1. The Woods
  2. To Valley
  3. TheOcean
  4. A Long Open Road
  5. A Steep Slope
  6. To Glacier
  7. A Slippery Cave
  8. An Even Deeper Cave
  9. to Volcano
  10. A Log Bridge
  11. To Burning Desert
  12. The Woods at Night
  13. In the Clouds
  14. Inside the Mansion

Wonder Boy Gameplay

Wonderboy makes you run, jump and skateboard to the end of the level. Actually, it's harder than that. Food appears everywhere and you will have to collect it before your energy bar runs out. If you get hit once and you don't ride a skateboard or have a fairy with you, you lose a life. Lucky for you, power-ups will help you out. They are hidden in eggs that you have to run over or break before you can get the power inside. Familiar gameplay with a twist. Sounds good to me.

Wonderboy plays like any other platform game, except you have a vitality bar! If you're not familiar with one of these, I'll explain. Basically, when you start, your vitality bar is full, but it will automatically decrease as you progress, even if you don't do anything. It's like a combination of your health and your time limit. The game itself is quite difficult and with a vitality bar the difficulty increases.

You can recover it by collecting fruits and vegetables that appear at random points in the levels, so you will have to collect them as quickly as you can. Other items in the game include your trusty tomahawk, which you should receive at the start of each level, and a skateboard (accompanied by a helmet. Safety first!), which will increase your speed.

You will encounter a variety of creatures that will thwart your plans, most of them are local wildlife such as giant snails, spiders, octopuses and giant wasps. Enemies can be fairly easy to kill and most of them will take one or two hits at most. Different geographic areas will have different enemies, like the desert would have scorpions and the forest would have giant spiders, etc., so they are all pretty easy to kill.

The bosses, or should I say the boss, are exactly the same throughout the game, except his head will change every time you defeat him. At first he is an eagle and then turns into a variety of ferocious beasts such as a wolf, a troll, and Mike Wazowski from "Monsters Inc." When you beat the second boss, you start to notice a trend in the bosses, mainly because they all fight the same way.

It's rare that when you look at the arcade version of the game you realize that this version is no slouch. Most Arcade ports to consoles feel like a downgrade (technically they are a downgrade), for example look at Dynamite Dux and Altered Beast. This game has little difference between both versions, the arcade version is superior, slightly, but they are close. The sprites in the game are bright and very colorful, the boss and his multiple heads are quite good, some more than others. His eagle head is very well drawn, but some of the others are really blurry and unfortunately look horrible.

The smaller sprites of the boy wonder and the hidden bride look average and nothing special, they are not the best I have seen on the system, mainly because the animation of the characters is quite poor and only the legs move. which looks pretty fun, but also looks stupid. The backgrounds are also bright and colorful and look quite good. The forest level, for example, is quite good due to the clash of colors and brightness. The night tiers look quite bright which creates a contrast that works well, the dessert for example looks well made and is a gorgeous colour. Overall, the graphics are good enough and are very close to arcade games.

Graphics

The graphics are some of the best on the Master System, and even more so considering this is one of their first titles, and in some ways even improves on the arcade version. Everything is bright, colorful and detailed, and looks adorable.

Music and Sound

Anyway, the music in the game is pretty good but the problem is that it repeats itself a lot. Top-notch music is one of those tunes that really gets into your head and stays there. I had a big gap between playing this game - I originally had it seven years ago and emulated it a few months ago - but the first level's theme song could always be remembered if I needed it. In fact, in total, I think there are about four different tunes in the entire game. This tends to happen in most 8-bit games, so I can't complain about that, but that's the only problem with the music. The boss music is also pretty cool because it's slow and dramatic, and sounds really creepy (8-bit style). The sound effects are nothing special and not worth mentioning because they have little impact on the overall sound score.

Final reflection

Overall, this game is an arcade classic today and even though it's basically Adventure Island with better graphics and a few more sprites, it's still good. In fact, it's much better than Adventure Island, although they are more or less the same game, but this was the Sega version. I would recommend this game to any platform fan and also any game collector. This game has to be considered a classic today, especially the Arcade version. One of my favorite platform games of all time and also one of the most difficult, especially on the system. He's definitely the black sheep of the Wonder Boy series, but that's not a bad thing. (I'll probably never forget that damn theme song now!!)
