Everything you need to know about Conflict
When I look at this game, I see the great-grandfather of ADVANCE WAR for the Game Boy. Wow…I loved that game.
I'm a big fan of strategy games. Most of my teenage years involved me engaging in online battles of epic proportions in Command & Conquer, Warcraft, and Starcraft. Hell, I even dabbled in Civilization, although that game was a little too slow for me. It was good, but slow. When you think about the NES and its capabilities for making a strategy game, you're probably hard-pressed to think of anything worth mentioning.
BUT, and that's a big but, (ha ha ha), there were some strategy games released for the NES that really stood the test of time. One of those games is a little-known gem called CONFLICT. Nothing better than basing a game on a war that could have happened. Of course, I'm talking about the cold war. The war that never was but could have been!
The one thing you need to realize with NES strategy games is that you can't expect them to be crazy fast. In fact, most of them require slow movements and intense planning. Since they can't really do that with the intense graphics, they have to compensate by forcing you to input logical decisions about your next move.
Conflict Gameplay
With most strategy games, you will be asked to build your own units. Each turn you can create a unit in one of your two factories. One is capable of producing AIR COMBAT vehicles and the other focuses on LAND COMBAT vehicles. Good Black Hawk helicopters and tanks. I will love it.
The good thing about this game is that it doesn't make you babysitter. You can't just send your army en masse at the enemy and expect to win. No, you should also take a look at your units' armor, fuel, ammunition, and range. It's about implementing at the right time and in the right place. The last thing you want to do is send a helicopter too far only to have it crash because it ran out of fuel over enemy territory.
You will have to think about every move and anticipate your enemies. Should you focus on attacking his units one at a time, or spread your army out to cause a distraction? And don't forget to protect your flag tank. There's a lot to think about in this easy-to-learn but difficult-to-master strategy game.
Speaking of sending your units across the landscape, the tiles can represent several different terrains. Anything from mountains, bodies of water, grassy plains, forests, bridges. Damn…whatever. Who would have thought hexagons could be so amazing?
Graphics
The game takes place on a grid of hexagons, not unlike paper war simulators. The graphics are quite smooth. Blue for water, green cloud-like things for forests, etc. etc etc At least the units themselves look pretty good, and the close-ups of battle are decent.
Music and Sound
The music is quite upbeat, not at all appropriate for a war simulation. The sounds are just average. Zing-zing-zing for bullets and so on.
Final reflection
Despite its numerous flaws, I gave the game a 7 out of 10 because it's really one of the only decent games Vic Tokai released, and because there aren't many games like it for the NES. I guess how much you'll like it depends on how much you like war simulators and how high your frustration tolerance is. If you have a high tolerance for this and like war simulators, go for it, otherwise you're better off staying away.
