Everything you need to know about Contra
protector for NES (better known as Against in the United States) is one of the classic run-and-gun platform games that set a high standard for the genre and had a huge impact on NES. A game that offers non-stop entertainment but has a simple premise: run through the levels and shoot anything that moves to take them all down! Primarily a side-scroller, the game also features some pseudo-3D style levels to add some variety to the game.
Originally first seen in arcades before being ported to the NES, this was definitely one of the better results for the console, given that some arcade games hadn't transitioned to the home console as well, but Probotector/Contra It looks, feels and works great on this system.
Developed by Konami and released for the NES in 1988 in the United States, with its European counterpart Probotector coming to these parts in 1990, this is a game I first played when I was young and came to appreciate a little more in my adulthood. Probotector is definitely a brilliant game, although it does have a couple of minor flaws, mainly in the way the player loses lives too quickly and easily, and a huge challenge factor that is almost impossible to overcome without the use of the legendary. Konami code” (any old school gamer knows this, but if not, look it up). That being said, this is definitely a must-have game for your NES collection, especially if you like shooters that don't require a lot of brainpower to understand.
Typical of an NES game of this era, the game comes with very little backstory. Your character has just gone out onto the battlefield with the mission of eliminating the enemy. The game is heavily inspired by movies like Rambo, Alien, and Predator, and borrows many elements from these movies when it comes to gameplay and graphics. The concept of the game is simple and easy to understand: everything on the screen other than you or your partner is out to kill you and must be destroyed! There are some tricky passages here and there in the levels, but they are mainly based on quick timing and are not as difficult as normal platform games based more on jumps and obstacles.
All in all, Contra is an action-fest that appeals more to your muscles and reflexes than your brain. The game contains eight levels with quite a bit of variety, and you'll find yourself running through deep jungles, snowy plains, enemy bases, and a cave full of mutant aliens. On top of this, you get a wide variety of weapons, and you can find everything from machine guns and flamethrowers to pistols and laser rifles.
Contra has several interesting features. One great thing is that the levels use different scrolling techniques. While most levels use traditional left-to-right horizontal scrolling, level three scrolls vertically from bottom to top, and levels two and four even use a semi-3D perspective where you meet the screen. This method was rarely attempted on the NES, and although these levels are quite poorly programmed, it still gives a slight change of pace and is great to see. What's also nice is that the gameplay remains just as good regardless of what level you're at.
Brief History Against
CONFRONTATION WITH DNME
Neo City, not long ago voted the most livable city in the US, has fallen into the hands of DNME, immortal scum whose reign of terror has left no one untouched.
In its latest prank, DNME has kidnapped the city's chief commissioner. Their only hope is C-Force, an independent police group made up of alumni of the National Task Force.
But taking down DNME won't be EZ. It will require cunning, creativity and calculated risks. But then, they don't call them C-Force for nothing.
CONTRA IS THE NAME, THE STRATEGY IS THE GAME.
Your mission is to take on the role of Commando Burn and his men, Smith, Beans and Iron. Each man is equipped with unique weapons and abilities. Fortunately, you can change commands at any time to adapt your specialties to the task at hand. Choosing the right man for the job is essential.
Additionally, you have the option of Battle Plans. These allow you to call another commando to join you when the situation requires it. But it will only stay a few seconds. So select your battle plans wisely.
To defeat DNME you must successfully complete five missions. Some of the enemies and objects you eliminate will reveal weapons and items critical to achieving the objective of each mission. Collect as many as possible because each time you do, a power surge will register on the gauge at the bottom of the screen, allowing you to select a more powerful weapon. At the end of each mission, you will come face to face with an enemy boss. Conquering it will be your toughest test. If you fail, you will return to the beginning of the mission.
Each command starts with three lives. If you lose all three, you're done, but luckily you can choose to continue. If you do, you will be at the beginning of the level you just were on. Select players wisely because each one has unique abilities that can help you survive longer so the battle continues.

Gameplay Against
But the part where Contra really shines is in its gameplay and controls. They are, without a doubt, some of the best mechanics I have ever seen in a shooter, and even rival many games to this day. The controls are smooth and fluid, and you always have full control over your character. You can fire your weapon in all eight directions. While jumping, you can freely control yourself in the air, and you can also jump from a ledge to a ledge below you by pressing down and the A button. In addition to this, your character can also lie down on his chest.
This is a very smart move, as it allows you to avoid bullets fired from a long distance, while also giving you the ability to fire your bullets at low altitude, which is good for taking out special targets. The bad thing about lying down, however, is that you flatten yourself against the ground, thus becoming a much larger target than usual. This becomes even more important in the 3D levels, since in this level all enemy projectiles fly at you while you are lying down. At the same time, you have to stand up from time to time to shoot enemy targets or move to other locations. Another great element of Contra is that all enemy projectiles move at a very slow speed.
While this may seem unrealistic and strange at first glance, it actually adds a lot to the game as it gives you a good chance to avoid projectiles. And because the controls are so good, you can easily avoid enemy fire as long as you keep a cool head and keep track of where the bullets are. This becomes even more important in the 3D levels, since in this level all enemy projectiles fly at you while you are lying down. At the same time, you have to stand up from time to time to shoot enemy targets or move to other locations. Another great element of Contra is that all enemy projectiles move at a very slow speed.
Another really cool feature of Probotector/Contra is the wide variety of weapons you can find and use. When you start, you have a standard weapon that fires forward with a simple tap of the B button. By shooting and destroying miniature airships or these glowing buttons attached to walls, you can gain a letter-coded upgrade for your weapon, giving you a weapon that has a different firing pattern. There are guns that spread bullets in waves, rapid-fire machine guns, flamethrowers that fire in rapid, circular patterns, and laser guns that can fire across the screen, though you have to hold down the button to get the most out of it. . Your choice of weapons can make the shooting aspect of the game feel fresh, as well as make the challenge easier for you.
Graphics
There are some very good graphics here by NES standards, with a few different types of scenery with settings ranging from outdoor locations like jungles, waterfalls, and snowfields, to indoor military bases like hangars and armories. The backgrounds for each stage look great, and the design and details of the stages are fantastic. As a very action-oriented game, the colors are varied, but not too bright, maintaining a suitable theme and feel for a game of this type. The character designs look good as do the enemies, again varying between enemy soldiers or cyborgs for the PAL game. Despite being on an 8-bit system with some small character sprites, the details are good and the movement animations are nice and fluid.
While there is the odd, occasional slowdown as the screen begins to flood with various enemies respawning and bullet and explosion effects scattering everywhere, for the most part, the game runs and flows at a nice, fluid pace. The boss designs in this game are absolutely fantastic, and the detail in its graphics is amazing. As you progress through the game and start fighting the "real" terrorists, you'll see some fantastic boss designs, with different weak points to attack, which are highlighted quite well with different colors or some parts that have notable moves. The graphics in this game are excellent overall, not just for a game from that part of the NES's lifespan, but for any game on the console in general.
Music and Sound
Audio-wise, the game also has some great background music and some of my favorites from an NES game. Most of the background themes are the trademark music that has defined Probotector/Contra, especially those in the first stage and the three-dimensional upshot stages. The music is good and motivating, and varied in composition. It is mainly a mix of a high key instrument over a soft backbeat and suits the game and the stages in which they are used very well. I also found the sound effects in this game to be great, they even make different sounds to fire each of the different weapons you can acquire in the game. Other common sound effects, such as explosions and ?screeching? of enemies taking damage while your weapons grind away their armor are great.
Final reflection
After being showered with detail after detail, you should understand that Contra is one of the best shooters to ever hit the Earth. Not many prehistoric games can really show off how fun side-scrolling action can be. Contra is just that. It provides a thrill that no other action game represented at the time. Jumping, shooting and saving the planet from aliens really inspires the player to play more and more. Konami was an absolute genius when they created this game, as they knew that NES was going to have a game that had never before tainted the surface. If you're looking for a must-have game for your collection, this is it. Contra is by far the most inspiring and infuriating gaming experience I have ever had.
