Everything you need to know about Darkman

Nintendo Darkman - Titulo del Juego

dark-man, launched by Ocean Software in 1991, it is a video game developed by the company. It is compatible with Amiga, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Commodore 64 and Atari ST. There are two games with the same name, one for Nintendo Entertainment System and one for game boy. The game is inspired by the movie of the same name.

The game's protagonist, Darkman, a superhero with the ability to jump, kick and punch, as well as swing from a rope during action sequences, controls this side-scrolling platform game. Darkman's goal in most levels is to defeat the level's boss before the timer runs out.

Darkman, a disfigured gangster in the film, can don masks to impersonate various individuals, each of whom will dissolve into light when exposed to it. While disguised, Darkman gains a new appearance and special abilities associated with the person he is impersonating.

To advance to the next level, Darkman must take a photo of a different underworld character before he can turn it into a costume at the end of each level. A good photo gives Darkman more time to complete the current level. At the end of the film he is seen fighting for his life in a skyscraper that is being built after Darkman takes photographs of underworld figures.

Brief Darkman History

The history

Dr. Peyton Westlake, a brilliant scientist, conducting research in his laboratory, had just developed a synthetic replacement for human skin. While testing his discovery, he received a surprise visit from an underworld figure known as Durant, with some of his associates.

They had come looking for an incriminating memo that Westlake didn't even know he had. After ransacking Peyton's apartment and lab, Durant and his thugs took out Peyton's assistant, pushed Peyton into a vat of burning chemicals, and made the whole thing look like an accidental explosion. Thrown into the bay by the explosion, Peyton miraculously survived.

He ended up in a local hospital, identified only as a severely burned passenger. Certain nerves were surgically cut to prevent him from feeling the excruciating pain in his buttocks. But Peyton had a different kind of pain. His life had been cruelly destroyed.
With no more life and no more identity, not even a face, Peyton bolted from the hospital to wander madly through the streets and alleys, an unknown and disfigured man: DARKMAN.

As a side effect of surgery that removed his physical pain, DARKMAN found himself suffering from uncontrollable fits of emotional rage. Waves of adrenaline, flowing uncontrollably through his body, gave him almost superhuman strength.

As memories of what had happened to him began to return, DARKMAN devised a plan to meticulously recreate his laboratory in an abandoned warehouse and reconstruct his own face from the artificial skin he had grown. By doing this, DARKMAN could surely find the woman he had lost and, above all, seek revenge.

In fact, DARKMAN discovered that not only can he recreate his own face, he can create any face he chooses. And this will help him seek his revenge. He can even wear Durant's face! An obstacle stands in DARKMAN's way: time.

The skin you have artificially created is sensitive to light and will disintegrate after just 90 minutes of exposure. You must keep trying, whatever the cost. He once had a normal life, a beautiful girlfriend and a brilliant career. He was then brutally attacked by ruthless criminals: his face and body burned beyond recognition.

Now DARKMAN walks through the night looking for the woman he loves. Does a man who looks like a monster hope to save his burned flesh? and take revenge on those who destroyed his life.

Dark Man Gameplay

Overall, the gameplay is simple... with the first level being possibly the hardest opening level in any game. Although it may seem frustrating, it can be mastered in just a few tries.

There are many different modes as you progress through the game. You can be swinging from helicopters one minute and making your way through a fun house the next. Darkman, for some reason, is an underrated title, but as I played it, I found that I was quite enjoying making my way through all the different types of tasks.

You lose a life when:

  • Your power reaches 0.
  • You run out of time.
  • You are struck by a deadly enemy.

If you lose a life, the game restarts at the beginning of that level.

Chemicals

Collect as many bottles of chemicals as possible. This is added to your power at the end of the level (or, if your power is full, added to your score).

Gravity platforms and controllable rockets

Once you're on one of these platforms, you can direct it along its path by pressing the Control Pad left, right, and down. Simply follow the indicators on the screen.

Tightrope

Stay on the rope by keeping the balance indicator in the middle of the meter, using the A and B buttons.

Suggestions

Sometimes you can pick up stones and throwing stars to throw at enemies.

You can grab onto walls by jumping on them.

game stages

The game will continue through the following stages:

  • The Warehouse (three parts) [The Warehouse (three parts)]
  • Photo Stage with Pauly [Photo scenario with Pauly]
  • Central Park (three parts) [Central Park (three parts)]
  • Helicopter Stage? slow road [Helicopter Stage? slow road]
  • Photo Stage with Skip [Photo scenario with jump]
  • The Funhouse (three parts) [The Funhouse (three parts)]
  • Photo Stage with Smiley [Photo scenario with Smiley]
  • Chinatown (three parts) [Chinatown (three parts)]
  • Helicopter Stage? fast road [Helicopter Stage? Fast Track]
  • Photo Stage with Durant [Photo scenario with Durant]
  • The Girders (three parts) [The beams (three parts)]

Graphics

Music and Sound

In some ways it tries to follow the music of the film, but not really. Still, it's nice, definitely good music. It fits very well. Full of darkness.

Final reflection

Overall this is just an excellent game, one of my favorites. It's all well put together and certain segments, like Darkman's dark interludes, are enjoyable, as are occasional oddities and interesting features. You have a few tries to try and you'll probably need a few more, but hey, it's full of darkness, so turn off the light, sit in the dark and wait for the fourth entry while playing this game.
