Everything you need to know about Kid Icarus
Although today a game like Kid Icarus wouldn't be considered anything spectacular, but for a game that was released over a decade ago, this is one of the best platform games you can find and play. your Nintendo entertainment system! With mazes, mythology, items, and even an interesting weapons system, it's hard to find another game like it anywhere else. The distinction of being one of the first NES games to have a battery saver is what makes this type of game, simple, but fun to play, truly special.
Kid Icarus Gameplay
Kid Icarus is an obscure cult classic for the NES. You take control of the main character 'Pit', who was unknown until he became a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Nintendo Wii. The objective of the game is to obtain three sacred treasures, rescue the Land of the Angels and the goddess Palutena. You collect items and fight monsters.
The game is linear in style where the objective is to reach the end of the level without dying. You get unlimited continues, but the game's most annoying flaw is that if you land at the bottom of the screen, you die. Even if there is a platform down there, it doesn't matter. It's one of those games that avoids all common sense. Despite this flaw, it is still a very good game.
Your main weapon is a bow that has an unlimited supply of arrows that can be upgraded. Upgrades include the protective crystal that is a shield, the fire arrow can hit multiple enemies, and the sacred bow increases the range of the arrows. Originally, the bow is a little limp, but at least you can aim left, right, and up. And you don't get knocked down when an enemy hits you, so the challenge is much fairer than Castlevania.
In fact, there are many references to Castlevania II: Simon's Quest. You collect hearts which are used to purchase items, in the first Castlevania game hearts were ammunition for whatever weapon you were holding. In Castlevania II: Simons' Quest, hearts were currency. It is not strange? Although I should mention that Kid Icarus was released before Castlevania II: Simon's Quest.
The first three stages are divided into four levels. The first three levels involve getting Pit to the top of the level. But the fourth level is a maze in a non-linear style so this game has variety. One thing that doesn't make physical sense is that you can go to one end of the screen and exit at the opposite end; this would also be used in Super Mario Bros. 2. For some reason, this game reminds me of Metroid, although I can't really explain why.
The controls seem completely similar to jumping and shooting controls, although in Metroid you won't die by touching the bottom of the screen when there are platforms there. Now you jump like you're on the moon, but Pit has wings that never actually animate when you jump, so it makes you think he's jumping without them.
Story Kid Icarus
Let us return to the distant past to a time when Gods and Man lived together in harmony. Once upon a time there was a kingdom called "Land of Angels." This kingdom was ruled by two beautiful goddesses, Palutena who administered the light and Medusa who ruled the darkness. Palutena lived in the Palace of Heaven and administered light so that man could live happily. And bathed in this light, man grew food and lived in peace. However, Medusa, the goddess of darkness, was different. Medusa hated humanity. He really liked drying the crops that man worked hard to cultivate and turning people into stone statues.
In her anger, Palutena transformed Medusa into an ugly monster and banished her to the deep, dark underworld. For being transformed into this ugly monster and forced to live in the underworld, Medusa vowed to take over the Palace in Heaven where Palutena lived. So great was Medusa's anger that she joined forces with the monsters and evil spirits of the underworld and Medusa's army soon began to surpass Palutena's army in strength. A war soon began between Palutena and Medusa. Medusa led a surprise attack against Palutena's army who were barely able to fend off the attack.
Palutena's army
Palutena's army suffered heavy losses and was heavily defeated in the final battle. Furthermore, Medusa's army took away the Three Sacred Treasures: the Mirror Shield, the Arrow of Light, and the Wings of Pegasus. Almost all of the warriors in Palutena's army were turned into stone statues and Palutena herself was imprisoned deep in the Palace in the Sky. The peaceful kingdom of Angel Land became inhabited by filthy and terrible monsters and became a land of darkness ruled by the evil Medusa. Locked in the depths of the Palace in Heaven, Palutena's strength was exhausted to the last. As a last resort, he sought the help of the young angel Pit, who was a prisoner locked in a deep dungeon in the underworld.
Pit was a brave warrior who used to be in charge of Palutena's personal bodyguards. Armed with a bow and arrow thanks to Palutena's magical strength, Pit attempted to escape the underworld. The guard at this time was low in number as Medusa's army had advanced towards the Palace in the Sky. Pit managed to escape and set out on his long adventure to rescue Palutena. However, to defeat Medusa he had to obtain the Three Sacred Treasures.
Backstory that is only mentioned in the manual
This is a backstory that is only mentioned in the manual, there were no cut scenes or text explaining it. So unless you get the actual manual or a pdf form from the internet, you will have no idea what to do. Medusa is mentioned a lot in this game, how can you not think of Castlevania? Let's look at the weapons and items besides the flaming arrows, sacred bow, and protective crystal. There are the three sacred treasures: the mirror shield, the arrows of light and the wing of Pegasus. There's the harp that turns enemies into mallets that actually look like the hammer from the Donkey Kong arcade game and also in Super Smash Bros. You even get a credit card that gives credit when you buy things and return them. If this is Greek mythology that takes place long ago in Heaven or Hell.
Graphics
Visually, the game is full of detail and color, although the detail does not reach extreme areas. You'll find that the simple but effective way the stages are laid out and even the enemy designs are something worth keeping in mind, right down to the eggplant transformation! It's the little details like this that make games like Kid Icarus something special and the overall theme of the game set in a mythological setting makes it more pleasing to the eye. The best feature the game offers is that you can see a better ending with a better score, allowing you to go through the game again to get that better score.
Music and Sound
Audio-wise, there's a light and airy note to the game that you might not notice at first, but it puts the action and adventure in full swing. Like many action/adventure games of its era, the NES came up with some pretty impressive things to accompany Kid Icarus. The music fits and has variation in different places that keeps it from getting too old in one go. The sound effects are minimal and you'll find there's enough to keep the game moving and clear to give it that classic charm! Overall, you have the right combination of good music playing along with classic adventure sounds to create a good title.
Final reflection
Kid Icarus is a wonderful game for the Nintendo Entertainment System that has the word classic written all over the title. You'll find that there isn't much else that can compare to this game at the time, and while other games tried hard to compete and rank better than Kid Icarus, they simply couldn't compare. With the challenge you encounter along with weapons and the password feature to continue your game at a later date, there is plenty here to keep even the casual player engaged and keep the game going. Worth picking up for the few dollars it is worth, this title should be in any true collector's collection of classic NES games!
