After waking up from their nap, the Dream Landers discuss their dreams and fervently hope that each other's fondest wishes will come true.

One day, a young Dream Lander named Kirby woke up from his post-lunch nap feeling terrible. "What happened?" he asked himself. "I didn't have any sleep during my lunch nap!" This lack of dreams made Kirby very uncomfortable. After talking to some of his friends, he discovered that the problem was much more serious than he had thought, since they had not experienced any dreams either! “Something must have happened to Dream Spring!” they exclaimed in unison.

The Dream Spring is a magical well that is a repository for all the dreams of the inhabitants of Dream Land. Dreams also flow from the spring of dreams and envelop the land of dreams, granting all sleeping beings pleasant dreams.

Arriving at Dream Spring, who did he find but King Dedede, bathing in its magical waters! In the past (see Kirby?s Dream Land? for Game Boy®), King Dedede had caused mischief in Dream Land by stealing all the food and Sparkling Stars from the Dream Landers. Now, in the middle of Dream Spring, instead of Star Rod, sat Dedede, covered in a bubble bath.

"So you're up to your old tricks again, huh, Dedede?" Kirby accused.

“What are you talking about, young glutton?” Dedede looked surprised. “I thought I would do everyone a favor?”

"No no no!" Kirby shook his head. «I won't listen to your tricks! "What have you done with the Star Rod?!"

“Oh, that old thing,” Dedede said nonchalantly. "I broke it into seven pieces and gave each piece to one of my friends?"

“What was Dedede thinking?!” Kirby wondered. Before hearing more of what Dedede had to say, Kirby began the long walk to gather the pieces of Star Rod and return them to Dream Spring. Hopefully, it could bring the shine back to Dream Spring so that the people of Dream Land can enjoy their happy midday naps again.

One day, the peaceful life of Dream Land was shattered by a mysterious crisis! The inhabitants did not dream! On the edge of Dream Land, dreams and hope once gushed from Dream Spring, fueled by Star Rod. Investigating the spring of dreams, Kirby found the mischievous King Dedede swimming in its magical waters! Dedede had broken the Star Rod and given the pieces to his friends, who are now hiding in Dream Land! To recapture his lost dreams, Kirby sought out the Star Rod!

The game begins with Kirby taking a nap, but something is wrong. Kirby has not had dreams, a truly unusual occurrence in Dream Land. Kirby decides to visit the Fountain of Dreams, where all dreams come from, to see if something bad has happened to him. Upon arrival, he finds King Dedede bathing in its waters. He discovers that Dedede has broken Star Rod, the source power source, into seven pieces, giving six pieces to his friends and keeping one for himself. Kirby decides to track down the fragments to restore peaceful sleep and order to Dream Land.

Kirby is harassed by enemies and Meta-Knights along the way, but manages to find King Dedede at the Fountain of Dreams. After Dedede is defeated, the king grabs Kirby and begs him not to put the Star Rod on top of the Fountain of Dreams again. Kirby pushes him aside and does it anyway, accidentally freeing Nightmare. Nightmare absorbs the Source's powers and flies into the sky as the two panic.

King Dedede then inhales Kirby and sends him after Nightmare, where they fight on Planet Popstar. Kirby manages to defeat Nightmare, and the explosion ends up blowing a large circular hole in the moon, giving it a crescent shape. Kirby returns to the Fountain of Dreams and places the Star Rod back there, and everything goes back to normal with the dreams in Dream Land. It was then revealed that Dedede's previous actions were part of his plan to protect the Fountain from Nightmare, and Kirby and Dedede reconciled.

The story of Kirby's Adventure is linear. Each stage is a side-scrolling platformer, with various enemies scattered around, and each stage ends with a Goal Game. When a stage is completed, the door to the next stage appears in the level's lobby. What makes the game lobby unique from most other games is that it is part of the actual game. The game lobby plays like side-scrolling stages.

The entire game consists of seven individual lobbies, each with five to seven stages. Each final stage is a boss battle for a Star Rod piece, and after a boss is defeated, the boss room becomes the entrance to the next level.

There are also subgames in each lobby. Each level has one to three different subgame rooms. Depending on the player's progress in the subgames, they can earn bonus points or additional lives. A common one of these is the Museum, where Kirby can swallow one or two different enemies for a free copy ability (enemies can't hurt him in this room). There's also the Arena, where Kirby can fight a mid-boss to earn a Maxim Tomato and the mid-boss ability, as well as the Warp Star Station, where Kirby can take a Warp Star directly to another level. Sometimes these bonus rooms must be unlocked by using secret switches in several stages.

Beating the game unlocks a VS Boss! mode in the main menu in which the player can face all the bosses in a row, and a bonus games mode in which the player can play each of the subgames separately. Pressing all the switches in the stages to unlock all the subgames in the levels will complete the game to 100% in the main menu and unlock the bonus game. Beating the bonus game will unlock the ability to hear sounds for the game.

Graphics

The world explodes in color as lakes, fountains, waterfalls, clouds, castles, towers, trees and more come to life. The 6MB cartridge allows for some of the best backgrounds seen on the NES. Unlike the single-color backgrounds of Super Mario Bros. 3, Kirby's world has plenty of detail and color. It's a big, bright land that doesn't get repetitive or bland at any point. There are even some special effects at certain points, such as a rotating tower in one world and multiple parallax background scrolling in one of the later levels.

Kirby has all kinds of new animations due to his new abilities. The animation rivals some Super Nintendo games with the fast frame rate and plenty of facial expressions. Plus, there's almost no slowdown, flicker or breakup to speak of.

Music and Sound

The background music is appropriately upbeat and youthful, with some classic Kirby themes and some new ones. There are also plenty of cool new sound effects, but no Kirby voice (although that may not be such a bad thing, considering how cute and childish he is). The only minor problem is that some of the music gets too cute and annoying, but it's not a big deal.

Final reflection

Kirby's Adventure is without a doubt one of the best NES adventures out there. In many ways, it is superior to Super Mario Bros. 3, also one of the best on the NES. If you're a fan of Nintendo's action/adventure brand, then pick up Kirby's Adventure, the NES swan song.
