Gameplay of Super DodgeBall

The NES version of Super Dodge Ball expands on the basic principles of the original arcade version and provides individual names and statistics for each team member. Additionally, in addition to the 1-player tournament mode and 2-player battle mode, there is a free Beanball mode in which all six members of Team America can compete. The United States fought each other until it was alone.

The objective of each game is to beat the opposing team by throwing balls to their teammates. Each character has a life meter that gradually depletes when hit by balls. When their lives reach zero, they are eliminated. When a character is hit with a health bar less than or equal to three bars, they will be in a "fatigued" state, giving the opponent a temporary advantage. Additionally, each one has their own stats and two different power hits (one done while running and one while running jumping).

Graphics

Super Dodge Ball's visuals are excellent in the way the game is presented. With two teams on screen at any given time, you'll find that the speed of the game is only offset by the slight tearing in the image when the action gets intense on screen. All the special throws have different special effects that really stand out when you launch the ball like a rocket and eliminate an opponent with a thud and watch their spirit float into the sky!

The main examples of the special effects you see are the scatter shot, where your player {or the opponent} throws the ball and it splits into nine smaller balls and then travels across the screen only to hit an opponent's head . Stuff like this really makes the visuals on the NES stand out and push the hardware to its limits, even if the limits aren't too much!

Music and Sound

As for audio, the game gives you plenty of music to keep up the pace of the game and make you want to keep the sound going. You'll have the same track to listen to throughout the game, but the music is catchy enough that you won't mind listening to it more than once! The sound effects are also top notch, with the grunts of players being hit and then the croaking sound they make when they hit the ground reminding me of some of the things I heard in River City Ransom. Put all of these elements together and you have an amazing audio track that is enjoyable and fun at the same time, coming together to truly complete an impressive game!

Final reflection

Overall, Super Dodge Ball is one of those games that is a lot of fun to play and extremely fun once you've learned the intricacies that the game has to offer. With special releases at your disposal, as well as various equipment and locations you can travel to, you'll find hours of fun and enjoyment in this little cart.

The visuals hit the mark with the amount of special effects on display, while the game hits the mark with both the difficulty of the game and the skill needed to learn what the game is about. Add this to a slightly difficult to learn control, and you have an amazing game that is not common on any system to date! NES owners and collectors shouldn't pass up this title for anything and if you can find a copy, pick it up and play, you won't regret doing so.
