Everything you need to know about Dino Crisis 2
In an uncharacteristic move for Capcom, Dino Crisis 2 sees a complete reworking of the last game's concept. The original Dino Crisis was a great concept that ended up mired in annoying puzzle solving and unbalanced combat, but the sequel breaks free of those pitfalls and delivers a fast, tense action adventure that's occasionally frustrating, but definitely more fun.
Dino Crisis 2 Gameplay
Dino Crisis 2 reduces the survival horror subgenre to one of its components: combat. There are hardly any puzzles in the game; Instead, your mission is simply to kill many of the invading dinosaurs, while obtaining the items that will allow you to escape from the prehistoric hell. It's all on a larger scale than any other similar game made so far: dozens of birds of prey will attack you in each area, and by the end of the game you'll be busting caps with heavier weapons than ever before. seen in this type of game And I have to say that it is much more satisfying to set a bird of prey on fire with a flamethrower and finish it off with point-blank shots from a combat shotgun while it lies moaning and writhing on the ground, than to shoot a with the rinky-dink weapons from the first game.
Features and events keep the game moving at a good pace
All of these features and events keep the game at a good pace, and once you realize that enemies can attack from almost any angle (unlike the pre-arranged locations of Resident Evils' zombies), you'll stay on your toes. The game had no trouble keeping my attention, as I was just as eager to buy the next big weapon with my saved Extinct Points as I was to see what would happen next in the story. The story, by the way, is typical time travel mumbo-jumbo, but it has some cool twists and doesn't try to overwhelm the actual game.
Finally, those expecting 20 hours of play from their action-adventure games may want to rent or simply go elsewhere. Expect to have it finished within a few nights of dedicated play, like any survival horror game. Beating the game unlocks Dino Coliseum mode, where you can choose various characters from both Dino Crisis games, and even the dinosaurs themselves, to fight waves of enemies. You can use the total Extinct Points you have earned throughout the game to unlock new characters or dinosaurs, each time you complete the main story. This would have been a real feature if Capcom could have found a way to make this mode two-player, but it's better than nothing.
Graphics
Music and Sound
This game is an audio powerhouse. Much of the game takes place in the jungle, and your adventure is duly supported by... well, jungle music. Not the techno subgenre, that is, but a fast, tense, heavy beat that creates the perfect atmosphere for a dinosaur counterinsurgency. The music during the opening and ending is also stellar, with the intro film backed by a piece easily worthy of a Hollywood movie soundtrack.
The sound effects are just as good, with dinosaurs rustling the vegetation as they move, emitting primitive squeaks and whistles as they approach you, and your anti-tank rifle dooms them with an impressive BLAM. The T.Rex's roar is as deafening as it would be in real life, if you turn up the volume.
And lastly, this is a game that isn't ruined by shitty voice acting; The deliveries are competent for all three speaking characters, and Regina (apparently voiced by the same actress who handled her last time) delivers that wry, clever attitude once again.
Final reflection
Not being a fan of the puzzle-heavy original game, I admire the direction Capcom is taking with this game and hope they develop it further. I found Dino Crisis 2 to be a very entertaining game, with unbalanced difficulty and unreliable controls the only things holding it back from true greatness. Recommended for anyone who wants to see a horror game with an emphasis on action, although a rental may be sufficient for those who have many hours of free time to play.
