Everything you need to know about Gran Turismo
Although Gran Turismo was released in 1998, the game was in production for quite some time. The game's development time took three years, three years of development that were very well spent. The game's producer, Kazunori Yamauchi, is a huge car fan and after playing Gran Turismo, it's very clear why.
Before the release of its sequel, Gran Turismo was "THE definitive racing game", the most complete that could be found not only on Playstation but anywhere. It boasted impressive physics, a remarkably long queue of vehicles, and a surprising amount of freedom in how you're going to play the game. What looked like just another racer with flashy graphics on the outside was, in fact, a deep and surprisingly good title.
Gran Turismo Gameplay
Gran Turismo offers two game modes; arcade mode and simulation mode.
Arcade mode is like a quick race mode
You have a set of cars to drive on a set of tracks already available. To unlock more gifts, you must beat a certain track three times in Hard Mode. The flow is like this, select Arcade mode, select a race type (simple, time trial, etc.), select the difficulty (easy, normal, hard) and then you can select from a wide range of licensed cars, all from cars of renown. companies like Mitsubishi, Subaru, Toyota, etc. etc
After that, you can also select the transmission (automatic or manual), then you can select a racing track. The race tracks were well designed, some have more straights, others have more curves, while others combine both. Unlock more gifts by beating a track on Hard three times.
«Gran Turismo: el simulador de conducción real»
Simulation mode is fun, and very realistic, as the title also says
These tests will teach you practical driving knowledge, from the basics (starting and stopping, simple cornering) to advanced skills (multiple cornering, things like that). However, if you hit walls too much or drive on grass, you'll have to start that particular test again.
So let's say you now have your own license. You should buy your car. You already have 10,000 credits from the beginning. You can choose your preferred brands like Mitsubishi, Honda, etc. etc With that money, most of the time you can buy are second-hand cars. Don't choose just for looks, choose for the power and transmission of your car. FF cars tend to understeer, FR cars tend to oversteer, and 4WD cars tend to be heavier, causing you to fly into the wall when you turn too much. are After purchase, you can now run.
Gran Turismo was and always stands out for its realistic physics. Yes, the physics is very realistic, unlike other games where the steering is too easy and the brakes become useless. In real life, brakes play a very important role in steering, especially in tight turns.
After the race, you will be awarded points depending on your position at the end of the race. The same goes for the next races. At the end of the races, the points are added up. You earn money depending on your rank. Being champion gives you a championship bonus and a new car.
Así que ahora tienes dinero. Tienes muchas cosas en las que pensar: «¿Debería ahorrar para un auto mejor?», «¿Debería actualizar mi auto ahora?». La decisión es tuya.
Improving the most fun part of the game. You will have many upgrade parts to choose from: mufflers, stabilizers, suspension, turbo, tires, etc. etc…. practically all interior parts. And those parts have levels, like sports-semi-careers-careers (for many parts); or soft-soft, soft-hard, etc. (for tires); rear or front soft-medium-hard (for stabilizers) and things like that. To make your car look better and allow you more options, you can have it undergo a Racing Modification, to make it look more like a racing car than a city car.
Many cars, many parts, many tracks. The only thing I could ask for was more racing events.
Graphics
The graphics almost deserve a full ten! For a PSX game, the graphics were impressive!
Gran Turismo's graphics made everyone sit up and take notice of what the PSX was really capable of, they showed an amount of realism never before seen when it came to Playstation games. The amount of attention to detail was astonishing, from the smoke the cars belched to the gravel that kicks up when they go off the track, very little was left of this title.
Each car (and there are many of them) has its own design and they superbly represent their real life counterparts, a lot of research must have gone into it because in most cases the car designs are perfect. The tracks and their surroundings have been done well, and although they don't share the realism that the vehicles contain, they still look quite hot, some of the landscapes you drive through are quite magnificent.
It's the race replays that really stand out in the graphics department, the first time you watch them a person could be forgiven for thinking they're real. If there were comments during the replay, it would be exactly the same as what you see on TV. All the cars look even better during the replay (they all seem to have about ten coats of wax on them) and the high-speed races they take part in make for good viewing. These have been the only replays I've seen worth taking up a block or two on a memory card.
Overall, although the graphics have now been surpassed by Gran Turismo 2 (but barely), the visuals this game offers are some of the best of the era. The biggest surprise is that they only used the 75% of the Playstations capacity.
Music and Sound
The sound quality is also quite good, the same detail that was so evident in the graphical areas is present once again in the audio department. Most of the car engines make their respective noises (an incredible task considering the huge list), sound realistic, and are surprisingly soft on the ears compared to other racing games.
The music on offer in Gran Turismo is good in every way, even compared to futuristic racing games from Pysgnosis, Wipeout and Rollcage. The songs fit the racing atmosphere quite well (high speeds make them sound much better for some reason) and are tunes you're not likely to tire of in a hurry. The only thing missing in the audio category is probably the collision sound effects, you get a little bump but it's not really enough to satisfy the most murderous drivers.
Overall the sound is great! Combine a memorable soundtrack with super realistic engine noises to leave you with two thumbs up. It's not as polished as the graphics, but it's still easy on the ears.
Final reflection
Although the driving in Gran Turismo is realistic, the controls are surprisingly solid. Everything works as it should and you can choose between three different driving views. A Dual Shock is the only way to play. The feedback that comes from the controller while you run adds to the experience. Sure, you can play with a standard controller, but it's like stealing a lot of joy from yourself.
Gran Turismo is an incredible game. With options and cars galore, only the most jaded player would avoid this. Sure, licensing tests can be a hassle, but the struggle is worth it. It takes a lot of time and effort to truly progress, but the fruits of your labor will be delicious. Like the original Ridge Racer, Gran Turismo helped sell a ton of PlayStations.
