Everything you need to know about Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver

Playstation 1 Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver Titulo del juego

Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver is definitely a great game. It's gothic, dark and not for everyone. But if you're a fan of great adventure games, SoulReaver is definitely something you should think about playing at least once in your life. SoulReaver is a title that is in the same series as Legacy of Kain Blood Omen, but in a different timeline, with a different main character. It's a decent title with very few flaws.

SoulReaver has something you rarely see in a video game: a great, continuous story. Now before anyone jumps on me with this statement, think about what I've said. There are a lot of great stories for video games, but they almost never have a sequel that has anything to do with the previous game.

If we take the Final Fantasy series, for example, none of them have anything to do with the previous game. Sure, there are some continuing story lines, like the Tomb Raider series. But there really is no continuity between each game except the same character always searching for the treasure. Wow, there is a devastating thriller. To be honest, there are only two game series that I can think of that had good plots that continued from game to game. They would be Wing Commander and Metal Gear.

Every time a sequel game comes out, it picks up where the previous one left off, even to the point of uniting characters from previous games. That's what I call great storytelling. Now that you understand my views on what makes a great story, you can better appreciate what I'm about to say about this game, and that is: SoulReaver's story kicks ass! If you didn't play the first game, let me give you a recap. In Blood Omen, there was a man named Kain who was betrayed and killed. Instead of simply dying, he saved himself and transformed into a vampire to take revenge on his enemies.

Kain stalked the land, feeding on the blood of the innocent as he searched for his traitors. Basically, Kain takes revenge, gains power, and seeks to rule the planet. The story is much, much more complex than that, but you really need to experience it for yourself to appreciate it. Now SoulReaver picks up a millennium later, with Kain gaining full control of the planet. The humans are all but defeated, serving as nothing more than slaves to their vampire gods. After Kain took revenge on the people who murdered him, he raised six souls from the spectral plain to serve as lieutenants. One of those souls is Raziel, the hero of this story.

Having such great power, Kain always received the gifts of evolution first. He would gain a special ability and about a hundred years later, his minions would follow him. However, things don't always happen as they should. Raziel was the first of his brothers to receive the gift of flight. When he appeared before Kain and revealed his new ability, Kain became enraged and ripped the supporting bones from Raziel's wings.

He then has Raziel thrown into the vortex; a swirling mass of water that is eternal death for vampires. After suffering for an immeasurable amount of time, Raziel is rescued by a being known as the Ancient One. The Elder makes a deal with Raziel (not that he really has a choice) and so our adventure begins. Again, it's a lot deeper than I've described it, but you get the idea.

Legacy of Kain Soul Reaver Gameplay

Combat is simple and satisfying. Aim, use X with a direction on the control stick to dodge and Square to attack. Raziel will execute a 3-hit combo when pressed sequentially. When the enemy takes enough damage, you can do a finisher.

?I knew the weaknesses of my opponents, I had suffered them myself. Physical wounds are fleeting; The immortal flesh of a vampire begins to close as soon as it splits. Vampires need only fear those wounds that impale or inflame. The water burns like acid and the chicks are devastated by the touch of sunlight.

You can't just kill a vampire by repeatedly slashing it with your claws; However, by repeatedly hitting a vampire enemy, you will eventually stun them. After they are stunned, you can do several things to them. If Raziel has a weapon, he will perform his finisher, such as impaling the enemy with a spear. If you are fighting barehanded, Raziel will lift the opponent into the air and, upon releasing Triangle, will throw the opponent in the direction they are facing. By doing this, you can land the enemy on a spike, in water, in sunlight, or anywhere else where death will occur. Of course, if there is no dangerous terrain around, he will simply launch the enemy, fly into the air, fall, and end up in a stunned position once again.

The world of Nosgoth is played on a large map. Levels play in a Metroid-like pattern: use what you have, access what you can, and when you have a new ability, return to a past area and use it to gain access. The Elder, the one who guides Raziel's hand, will tell you what to do after receiving a new ability and will give you information and advice throughout your journey. The game is very engaging.

Soul Reaver is known for its block puzzles. These puzzles involve pushing, pulling, sliding and flipping blocks to place them in a particular position to fit a picture or something similar to make them work. It's fun at first, but becomes redundant.

However, this is a small complaint. The rest of the time, it's about finding your way to the next point. This is done by traversing the area in two planes: the material and the spectral planes. By default, Raziel starts the game in the Spectral Realm. This is the ghostly world of Nosgoth, filled with souls. Raziel's health coil fills by consuming souls and devouring the energy they contain. After being destroyed, his bloodlust has left him and is instead replaced by the hunger for souls. By devouring enough souls in the Spectral Realm, he can use the Planar Portals to gather matter and wishes to manifest in the Material Realm. However, over time, his health coil will deplete and, without souls, his energy will fade until he is sent back to the Spectral Realm.

However, the Spectral Realm is not a punishment. You can switch to the Spectral Realm at any time by using the Spectral Glyph (Glyphs are ancient runes that grant Raziel some elements, such as Water and Fire). Using the Spectral Glyph, Raziel will leave his physical body and return to the spirit world. Coming to this world, souls roam freely, as said before, so it is free energy. Additionally, paths and walls will twist and contort to reveal new paths to help you when you're stuck. One drawback, however, is that objects cannot be manipulated in the Spectral Realm, meaning you can't flip switches or move blocks.

Not too far into the game, you will receive the Soul Reaver (a spectral blade) through events that I won't spoil for you. Soul Reaver requires energy to manifest, and when Raziel reaches his maximum health coil strength, Soul Reaver will appear. This weapon is extremely powerful, and as long as Raziel remains at full health, the Reaver will stay with him and not let his health decrease over time.

A big flaw with Soul Reaver is that the game was rushed. They had to cut it at the end and make it much shorter than it was supposed to be. Fortunately, Soul Reaver 2 picks up where Soul Reaver 1 left off, and while it strays from the original plan, it's still a wonderful series.

Graphics

For Playstation 1, these are wonderful. Raziel, the antihero and star of SoulReaver, is a twice-dead vampire who has returned from oblivion. Rotten, its skin has turned a vague blue and its wings are broken. They always flow behind him as he runs, tattered and ruined. His eyes glow with an eerie white light and his chest is a rotting ribcage. The lower jaw rotted away, but he now wears his old hood to cover his face. Its grotesque appearance fits perfectly in this game.

The surrounding environments are equally dark and intimidating. As you explore the ruined world of Nosgoth, you will find much of the ground desolate, with nothing but dirt covering its empty surface. There is not a plant in sight, except for one or two dead trees. The only living things you see are some crows. Remember, vampires aren't alive, so those don't count. Dull colored textures are completely devoid of vitality. However, that's not a bad thing; They do an excellent job of setting the mood for the dark and depressing world of Nosgoth.

There are 4 different species of vampires in this game, each with their own distinctive look. Dumahim vampires are burly and vicious, while Zephonim are thin, thin, and pale. Each type of vampire, besides the Dumahim, resides in a different area. The zephonim inhabit the Silenced Cathedral, the Rahabim inhabit the Drowned Abbey, and so on.

The areas themselves are very impressive. Melchy's chambers are located in a strange temple. The stone is cracking and falling out of place, and the rain is constant here. The Silenced Cathedral is dark and imposing, much more vertical than horizontal. A small town was even built on it.

The spectral plane (more on this below) was constantly flooded with strong blue light, covering everything in the realm itself. The downside is that there are visible seams in this game; luckily, it's nothing like Tenchu ??2, which was plagued with them.

Music and Sound

Very spooky. The world Raziel wanders in has very quiet music in some areas, much louder in others. A very memorable tune is an absolutely incredible track that plays in Kane's sanctuary. The rest of the music is quiet and unspectacular; it's just there to set the mood.

Sound effects… good, but there have been better ones. The real treat here is the voice acting. I've never heard better voice acting. Ever. It's so real, so well done, it absolutely surprises me. As you progress through the game it only gets better. Every speaker in the game, from Raziel to Kane to Dumah and everyone in between, uses a very large and impressive vocabulary, and with excellent emotion. You can feel what the characters are feeling just by listening to the tone of their voice.

Final reflection

One of the best games I've had the pleasure of playing on any system, great story well told, concern for longevity, but considering how much has already been included in the game, perhaps the memory restriction meant that no more extras or distractions could be made. including. Although it won't take most people long to finish it and although it may not be a game I return to many times... it is a wonderful game that is very much worth playing and I am grateful that I didn't pass it up.
