Everything you need to know about Tenchu Stealth Assassins
In Tenchu you can take on the role of two characters who do the dirty work for their teacher and mentor, Lord Ghoda. Rikimaru is the male character you can play as and Ayame is the female character. The story mainly consists of various missions that you must complete, such as killing a corrupt minister, finding a secret herb to save the princess's life, infiltrating a town that is under siege by pirates, etc. There is a story that loosely ties the missions together and you must ultimately free the princess who is being held hostage by an evil overlord.
Tenchu Stealth Assassins Gameplay
The gameplay is impressive in all aspects. You have several combat maneuvers that are very easy to learn, as well as the use of a grappling hook that will allow you to go literally anywhere within a level. You can sneak across rooftops, grab onto ledges, and slide down walls while trying not to let the enemy see you. The enemy AI features a very clever concept in that if they are unaware of your presence, you can sneak up behind them and take them out in one of three possible stealth kills. these are shown in an animated FMV and make the whole stealth concept worth it.
You can also fight your enemies face to face if you wish, but chances are you'll have a lot more fun sneaking up on them and pouncing on them unsuspectingly. There are also a wide variety of weapons and special items available that will give you even more flexibility in how you choose to dispatch enemies. Items include shuriken, sleeping potions, camouflage suits that mimic the enemy, grenades, mines, blinding dust, and many more. It's really amazing how they managed to fit all of this so well onto a PSX disc.
Surely you do not lack movements, objects and styles. You can do almost ANYTHING in at least three ways! He can walk around the corners of walls, sneak through grass or trees, then spring into action and take out his target with a quick surprise attack like a lion on a zebra, he can get right up close and dance face to face. or just use the grappling hook to reach the ceiling and walk right over the sucker. Even when you start a fight, that provides another wealth of options, with about 10 different slashing moves, a few different types of dodges/maneuvers, and almost 20 weapons/items. It doesn't really matter how you do things as long as you're spotless, so do what's most fun for you. I like to avoid the guards, reach my goal and then escape while my older brother prefers to leave a ghost town.
The control is surprisingly well done for a game with so many movements. Looking around is easy and you can get a great bird's eye view of the landscape if you are high up. The buttons and move combos are nice and simple, but the controller isn't very responsive, which I suppose is a good thing since you shouldn't be able to swing swords or shoot grappling hooks at any time anyway. The only real problem with the control is that the characters are too difficult to change. That can make certain two-on-one fights quite frustrating. The swinging motion should turn you around like Lara Croft, but it doesn't. Pity.
The levels cover a wide range of environments and most play very differently from each other. You traverse everything from forests with wolves patrolling to towns contaminated by pirates and caves with demons keeping watch. There are some obstacles to watch out for, such as traps and lava pools, but enemies are the main concern (although you can often use obstacles against them). Each enemy type also has its own attacks and fighting methods. Some sentinels slash with sharp swords and spears, while other enemies attack with iron claws, arrows, fire breath, and some real surprises.
Recordatorio).
Graphics
The graphics are clean and clear. You can't see polygons on each side of every person and thing in the game. Nor are they messily digitized Mortal Kombat-style characters. Everything is vividly detailed, from the beautiful lush and colorful forests to the village huts, to the barrels containing hay and the shelves full of vases and, occasionally, katanas hanging on the wall. The special effects are equally great, with a multitude of fire fragments scattering after the grenades connect with someone and enemies burning for a few seconds and other little things like slash marks with almost every attack. The animation is fluid almost flawless.
Once again, there is a pretty big problem; the camera. Sometimes when you hide next to a wall in a hurry, you will only see yourself, so you won't be able to see which direction the enemies went, if/when they are going to attack you, if there is more than one or even who they are sometimes! There are also some minor glitches that work in your favor, such as being able to see through walls like Superman if placed in the right places! Another minor objection is the blood. This will probably be the only time you'll see me complain about an excessive amount of blood. There is a time and a place for so much blood. I don't know about you, but I don't think there's supposed to be a blood geyser. When someone's throat is cut. Worse yet, check out the over-the-top death scenes of some of the bosses!
Music and Sound
The sound is probably the best part of the game. The music is simply phenomenal. With a very authentic sound, it will get your blood pumping when you try to stay calm. One minute it will be soft and relaxing, the next it will be loud and daunting, almost daring you to go further. The boss battle music is really exciting and even triumphant. The voice acting ranges from good to hilarious. Both Rikimaru and Ayame sound great (especially Rikimaru), but the rest of the cast is just laughable. However, that doesn't stop you from enjoying any of the characters. The atmosphere is pleasant, you will hear the crackling of torches, the singing of crickets and the howling of wolves. The sound of an arrow being released and the sound of swords sound very good too. Perhaps the best sound in the game is sneaking up on a guard and slitting his throat. It doesn't get much cooler than that.
Final reflection
