Everything you need to know about God of War PlayStation 2?
Greek mythology has captivated the human mind for thousands of years. Tales of vengeful gods, tragic heroes, lustful affairs, and the tribulations of the Greek empire have been told since the fall of Greece, and even today, many students read Homer's The Odyssey and The Iliad in literature classes. Because this story is such a well-known property, it has been somewhat surprising that no video game developer has attempted to create a game for modern consoles based on it. That is, until SCEA decided to release a project called God Of War to its developers.
God Of War History
As it progresses, the plot holes you were wondering about are suddenly resolved. And boy, is it surprising and exciting. This only makes the already excellent story even better. Usually in action/adventure games like God of War, the story isn't really the important thing, so the developers lack the motivation to create a halfway decent story. This game is an exception. It is not only known for its epic gameplay but also for its incredible story. This will definitely get you interested in Greek mythology, as it did for me. If you heard those two words before playing this gem, you would only think of Zeus or other mythical creatures. Now, I only think of Kratos from the game's actual title, although mythical creatures and Greek gods are present.
Kratos is definitely one of the most recognizable characters in any game. Although he's not really a good guy, he's a great protagonist. You honestly don't know what to think of him. Is he a good guy? Is he a bad boy? Either way, you like it and you don't know why. His past (I won't spoil anything) is his own story.
In modern action/adventure games, you don't expect an epic story at all. Although it is generic at times, it is still an incredible story. It could be considered worthy of a movie, even. And it's not just the story that's good, but how they tell it with the emotional and, more often than not, brutal scenes.
God of War PlayStation 2 gameplay?
Another advantage, which is not relevant with combos, is that you can double jump by pressing the X button twice. Awesome! Now remember, instead of mashing buttons, experiment. There are so many moves you can do in this game that I can't even count them. And in addition to being deadly, it's incredible to see how a new combo is achieved.
Your main weapon is the Blades of Chaos, which are those swords that are attached to a chain that is attached to Kratos' arm. These are in a simple word; awesome. As you progress, you gain magic and one more weapon; the Sword of Artemis. You may be disappointed by the lack of weapon variety, but trust me, you won't even think about that once you play it. Every weapon at your disposal is upgradeable. How exactly do you do it? I'll explain it later.
- Orbs: The orbs consist of three different types. Magic orbs (blue). Health orbs (green). And experience orbs (red). Obviously they are. Magic orbs replenish a portion of your magic, health orbs do the same, but for health and experience orbs they are basically the currency you use to upgrade your weapons and magic. To obtain this you ask yourself? Well, there are chests that populate each level, which usually contain one of the three. Magic and health orbs are easily marked and are usually next to each other. When you open these chests, they completely recharge your health or magic. Chests containing experience orbs are rarer. Another way, also the most common and easiest, is by defeating enemies. You mainly gain experience points when you kill enemies, but if you do special kills, you receive health and/or magic orbs along with them.
Gorgon Eyes and Phoenix Feathers: These are in unmarked chests. They are rarer than orbs. What they do is permanently increase your health (Gorgon Eyes) or magic (Phoenix Feathers). These are almost mandatory to survive the most difficult difficulties. You have to collect six of each for it to increase your health or magic, so it will be a semi-long process, depending on whether you explore the levels.
Weapons and Magic (Updates): As I said, when you progress through the game, you get four different magical abilities given to you by different Gods and another weapon. Each of these is upgradeable. When you send the required number of orbs to upgrade a level, said weapon or magical ability becomes more powerful. For Blades of Chaos, you will learn more moves. With magic, the power usually becomes more powerful, such as with Poseidon's Wrath (explained later), the area it covers becomes larger and the actual lightning becomes stronger.
Magic Skills: You have four different magical abilities. Poseidon's Wrath is the first skill you get and probably the most useful, especially when upgraded. Basically, Kratos summons lightning bolts that damage all nearby enemies. Medusa's Gaze is the second ability you get. If you know anything about Medusa, you probably know what this power does. According to legend, if you look into Medusa's eyes, you will turn into stone. That's what this does. You take out Medusa's head and point it at the enemies, the bigger they are, the longer it takes. The problem is that you have to keep it aimed at the enemy for it to be successful. However, the Gorgon's (Medusa's minions) have the same power. The third ability you get is Zeus' Fury, which is basically your long-range weapon. Since Zeus is the god of lightning or thunder or whatever, you can throw lightning bolts. You can also hold the beam in your hand to charge it and make it more powerful. The last ability is Hades Army.. This is where you summon souls from the underworld to kill/attack any nearby enemies. This is also good for racking up big combos.
Bosses: another quality that God of War is known for. Each and every boss battle is epic, especially the Hydra, the giant Minotaur, and the predictable spoiler ahead!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!! !!!: Ares. All of them are not too easy, but they are not too difficult either. And I like that. It provides a challenge, but not to the point where you feel frustrated and ready to throw the controller at your window. When you kill them, you do the aforementioned minigame which leads to a cinematic and bloody ending. Incredible. Simply incredible.
Again, there are puzzles that you must solve. Fortunately and surprisingly, they don't actually make the game boring; It's a different change of pace that really works. They are also fairly simple, but some can present a challenge. The feeling of accomplishment when completing the most difficult puzzles is simply a great feeling, along with a quick burst of excitement (Stop dirty thinking). And once again, this also has parts of Platforming. It usually involves balancing on a wooden beam and if you fall, you die. Simple as that. It's strange how three totally different genres come together so perfectly.
The longevity of this game can last between 10 and 15 hours on your first playthrough. Then, when you beat the game on any difficulty, you unlock God Mode. Good luck (and I'm proud to say I'm over it). There are also a good number of unlockables. Without needing to beat it, you can see the making of God of War and two different trailers. When you beat the game on any difficulty, you can see the levels that were removed from the game, some of which make you wonder why they weren't kept. You can also see how the levels were designed, same with the different enemies. There's also the character graveyard, which is one of my personal favorites. You can see enemies and characters that didn't make it into the game, including prototypes of Kratos, Gorgons, etc. You can also watch all the cutscenes in the game as many times as you want. However, the most notable is the Challenge of the Gods, which is compiled into 10 difficult challenges and when you beat it, you unlock additional costumes. You also unlock three different things when you beat the game in God mode, but that's something you have to figure out.
Graphics
Sorry for getting a little carried away with the cutscene talk. Let's talk about magic-animation. Rather than get too elaborate, I'll just say that, like the game's cutscenes and graphics, they are incredible, as well as beautiful. I also love how the girls look on the board :). I will say the only downsides are minimal frame drops, only when you are in massive battles and you can obviously see that all the characters don't look as good as Kratos.
If the enemies, along with other characters, were more detailed, I would give the graphics department a solid 10/10. Most of the time, I don't take points off for frame drops unless they are so bad that they hinder gameplay, which is a non-starter for this game.
Music and Sound
The voice acting, along with the sound effects, are excellent. I'll start with the outstanding voice acting first. First, I must congratulate everyone who did a voiceover in this game. I can't think of a case where the voice acting was terrible. But the two voiceovers that stand out above the rest are the actor who played Kratos and the actress who played the narrator. I'm not going to explain too much about the narrator, except that it sounds like what a dramatic narrator should sound like... if you can understand that. The actor who played Kratos, on the other hand, was impeccable. Since Kratos is a 24/7 angry person and never shows any emotion other than excessive anger, you would expect an angry voice all the time, and that's what we got. Whether he is speaking in a regular tone or shouting, he always emphasizes anger in such a brilliant way. Simply exceptional. I could go on, like I did with the cutscenes, but I won't.
The sound effects sound like they should sound; realistic. Unless it wants to be reminiscent of a comic book, but it's not. Whether it's the sound of the Blades of Chaos (Kratos' signature weapon) hitting the pavement, or him doing magic, it all sounds beautiful. This has, without a doubt, some of the best sound effects and voice acting work to ever appear in a video game. And I say it with pride.
Final reflection
God of War is a masterpiece. It may not be incredibly innovative, but it definitely beats games that are similar. Boasting some of the best combat systems, along with gorgeous voice acting and epic boss fights, among many other things, this deserves nothing less than a perfect score. And for it to be my favorite game for over a year is saying something. Although now, it's only my third favorite game of all time.
While it may not have the same replay value for you as it does for me, I would still buy this if you have a PS2. God of War is a must have for any PS2 owner and/or collector. If this review motivates you to buy this game and you end up not liking it, well, there's nothing I can do for you. I was not disappointed with this game at all. I love all. It's exceptional on almost every level you can categorize games on to make it an essential PS2 purchase. God of War is a game that created one of the most recognizable protagonists of all time, along with one (actually two) of the baddest weapons to ever appear in a video game. This is the same for God of War 2. So what are you waiting for? Buy the damn game. Now!
Oh, there's one thing I forgot to mention. The Sword of Artemis is a giant sword that takes bad to a whole new level. Although it's a bit slow, rightly so, it takes out enemies quickly.
So if you want awesome weapons, a great story, gory gameplay, fantastic cinematics, epic boss battles, great unlockables and simply one of the best games to ever grace this land in your collection, then God of War is your game. Especially if you liked games like 3-D Ninja Gaidens and Devil May Cry.
