Everything you need to know about Hitman 2 Silent Assassin
Hitman 2 Silent Assassin is the sequel to Hitman: Codename 47. The latter game was only released for PC and was moderately successful. It's an action game that relies more on stealth than running and gunning through levels. This sequel continues the same tradition on all three major consoles, as well as PC.
History
The main character of Hitman 2 is known simply as 47, nothing more, nothing less. You were one of the best snipers in the business, but after completing your last mission, you decided to apply for early retirement. You went to work for a church as a gardener and tried to change your way of being. Suddenly, the minister is kidnapped and you are forced to go back to work for your old agency to find him. However, your agency has even more missions prepared for you in exchange for finding your friend. You will find yourself in many places around the world, such as Russia, Japan, Malaysia and India.
Hitman 2 Silent Assassin gameplay
Hitman 2 opts for a different type of game engine than most other titles. It rewards you for the amount of stealth you perform, rather than the number of kills. You'll find that to be the case especially on the harder difficulty levels. Where your game ends instantly if you blow your cover, and the guards are much wiser. You have a limited amount of savings you have, and your health supply also decreases on harder difficulty levels. Don't complain that this is going to be too difficult, because you're in luck with the rich offering of techniques that 47 can do.
There are some basic techniques you can do, such as sneaking up behind opponents by crawling or dodging around a wall. To access Hitman 2's many restricted areas, you'll need to change your costume to match that of your enemies. How do you do that? Simple, just take out a guard early on and change clothes. Don't make a scene when you take him out, or you'll blow your cover. Fortunately, you can strangle enemies from behind with your trusty fiber cable or take them out with a silenced weapon. Make sure to hide his body, because if you don't, the other guards will eventually find him and keep an eye out for allies acting suspiciously.
Do what you do
Whatever you do, don't run and fight your way through most of the levels. You'll be in for a world of pain if you do. Most missions involve you taking down a big crime boss or an evil world dictator. You're going to blow your cover by shooting through the stages and making a racket, and the guy you're supposed to take out will flee the scene immediately.

Graphics
To be honest, I wasn't expecting a fabulous graphical presentation. I knew that the developers put most of the work into the PC version, so I expected most of the textures and environments in Hitman 2 to have a more toned-down look, along with a lot of jagged spots. I couldn't have been more wrong. The developers at IO Interactive took full advantage of the PS2 hardware. While the PS2 version may not look as crisp and polished as the PC and X-Box version, it still manages to hold its own.
The character models in Hitman 2 bear a similar resemblance to those found in Timesplitters. Although these character models are not as thin and anorexic as those in Timesplitters, you can tell they are heading in that direction. The look of 47 is what you would expect it to be. He has an extremely dark appearance, which is mainly due to his black suit and impressive red tie. The other character models look great too, but the variation between the average soldiers you encounter only extends to the hats they wear.
The camera works great for Hitman 2. I prefer the third person view, so you can see what's coming from all directions. The first person perspective is as good as any FPS. If you decide to play that way, you'll notice that all weapons have their own reload animations, just like any other shooter. Speaking of animations, they are done perfectly in this game. Enemies will react when you shoot them. If your shot hits their hand, they will hold it in pain for a few seconds or limp after a shot to the leg. Loading times aren't too bad and are comparable to Halo when you load a new mission. In the middle of a heated battle, you won't notice any slowdown. There is a slowdown though, and it only happens when you're playing by constantly walking into random objects.
Music and Sound
I was simply impressed with the entire audio presentation. I usually don't expect much from background music in these types of games, but once again I underestimated the developers. The soundtrack is exceptional! The Budapest Symphony Orchestra contributes to Hitman 2's musical score. These dark performances will keep you glued to your seat, as they perfectly represent the dark tone that is Hitman 2. It's also worth taking note of the game's audio effects. Each weapon has its own distinctive tone. It's easy to tell which weapons are silenced and which will cause a ruckus.
All the civilians and soldiers you meet speak to you in their native language. Don't be confused by their language because there are translations at the bottom of the screen. The voice acting is also well done for the main characters. 47 has that dark, evil tone to his voice that you would expect. His agent, Diana, has a strong English accent and is very familiar with the role of Moneypenney in the James Bond films.
Final reflection
Hitman 2 is an exceptional game overall. My fears of the developers making a quick port to PS2 were quickly put to rest, and the developers surprised me countless times, and then some. If you love stealth-based games like Metal Gear Solid, or are up for a big challenge, then do yourself a favor and try Hitman 2. You won't be disappointed.
