Gameplay Alisia Dragoon

In Alisia Dragoon, the player controls the protagonist, Alisia, on her quest to save the world by defeating the evil forces that killed her father. The game consists of eight levels of side-scrolling environments; Alisia has to jump over the gaps and kill the enemies that get in her way. Each stage is completed by defeating the boss at the end.

Alisia attacks by shooting rays of light from her hands. The attack automatically targets enemies within range, but becomes weaker with each volley as Alisia's power is depleted. His power recharges when he stops attacking; When fully charged, it allows you to unleash a multi-target attack, hitting all enemies on the screen. The power system introduces an element of strategy, encouraging the player to harness Alisia's power so she can defend herself at critical moments.

Helping Alisia on her quest are her pet monsters. These creatures fly around the heroine alone, attacking her enemies and blocking enemy attacks from hitting her. There are four pets, each with their own attack type. Dragon Frye spits fireballs. Boomerang Lizard throws boomerangs. Thunder Raven emits a blast of thunder that affects enemies on the screen and finally Fireball burns enemies on contact.

Only one of the pets can fight alongside Alisia on her quest, but the player can select any of the four (or none) as an active companion at any time. Over the course of the game, Alisia and her monsters can improve their abilities by collecting power-ups. These upgrade items are placed throughout the first seven stages, mostly in hidden locations.

Alisia Dragon does not have features to save player progress. Once the game is completed, a screen is displayed showing the player's overall performance based on the number of kills, the power level of Alisia's attack, and how often pet monsters are used.

Graphics

Now, the visuals in Alisia Dragoon offer some of the best side-scrolling detail you can find in games like this. Alisia has life and animation along with some exceptional details without giving way to the various problems that most games of this age and type have on older systems in terms of slowdown and crashing. Most stages suit the mood and you'll find that in the later stages of the game, the various effects that are supposed to generate movement and otherwise flash across the screen like nobody's business. Considering that this is a Genesis game that is relatively old, you will find that the images shown here pull together a much larger story that is quite enjoyable to watch, as it is to play.

Music and Sound

The sound effects you hear in the game are limited to small squeaks and such that come from Alisia getting nailed by an enemy, and some of the opening and ending themes are pretty good too. However, the game has a strange fantasy tone that simply does not go away over time, but rather remains in your mind after you turn off the game! The best example of this is the stage music for level four, and the music may be enough to keep in mind for a couple of days after playing this game. Other than that, there really isn't much else in the audio selection worth mentioning, and I've heard that the Genesis really comes cheap on its sound, this being a small example of that fact.

Final reflection

Alisia Dragoon isn't a bad side-scrolling game, but it's definitely aimed at players with a much more advanced skill level. With no password feature and little to no replay value, there really isn't much reason to pick up this game once you've played it! Control is something that takes a little practice; being the difficulty the biggest strong point of the game. Visually, the game shines, while the music veers a bit on the fantasy side. All in all, Alisia Dragoon is a solid game that offers a great challenge for anyone looking to test their action gaming skills.
