Everything you need to know about Battletoads
In 1993, Arc System Works programmed Battletoads for the Mega Drive and distributed it through Sega. It is a direct port of the NES version, so we are facing a beat'em up with several phases, some more challenging than others. The main aspect of this game is the variety of situations we encounter, just like in the classic NES game.
Brief History Battletoads
After being defeated by Galactic Corporation in the battle of canis major, the Dark Queen and his renegade space troops retreat to the ends of the universe, hiding in the dark spaces between the stars.
Meanwhile, aboard the spaceship vulture, the teacher T. Bird and the Battletoads (Rash, Zitz and Pimple) escort Princess Angelica back to her home planet, where her father, the Terran Emperor, awaits her safe arrival.
Along the way, Pimple, the largest Battletoad, takes Angelica on a cruise on the Toadster to a nearby amusement station.
Pimple and Angelica burn the space, but the Dark Queen He ambushes them before they can arrive. Fortunately, Pimple manages to send a distress signal before the Toadster is devoured and taken to the World of ragnarok, the planet of the Dark Queen…
So, there's the situation, 'toad: the Dark Queen kidnapped Princess Angelica and her best friend, Pimple, is ronamamn, what are you going to do about it?
You're going to get really ANGRY, that's what you're going to do, and then you're going to GET EQUIPPED!
Professor Bird will put you in Ragnarok, but from there it's up to you. You have a long way to go, toad, through ice and fire and nightmares so terrible you don't even want to imagine them, through a monstrous Gargantua and finally to the shadow tower, where the Dark Queen awaits you. .
Do you have the guts, 'toad? We will soon see, one way or another...

Battletoads Gameplay
Every platform game needs an exciting adventure or a way to change the pace throughout the game. Battletoads in Ragnarok's World not only accomplishes that, but it does it with style. For starters, Battletoads is basically an adventure platformer where you can jump or attack. Rash knows an arsenal of moves ranging from jabs, punches, and finisher combos to taking out bad guys. Different moves are used depending on the level, but they all fulfill the same task: eliminate enemies. The game starts with you (Rash) forced to fight in the World of Ragnarok until you can reach the Dark Queen's castle where your friends are. You will encounter numerous types of enemies, different bosses, and more than one way to deal with enemies.
Battletoads has a simple gameplay. Basically, you have one life bar and numerous lives. There are usually checkpoints placed in each level so you can continue there if you die. There are also certain obstructions like walls that must be broken with certain objects. Battletoads combines fast-paced action, fairly easy puzzles and the need for quick reactions. The boss battles are entertaining as they often have small arenas and you must avoid enemy attacks. The controls are very sensitive. You don't have to worry about missing any hits or a delayed jump. There are around six levels, each long enough to be broken down into stages. Points are awarded for killing enemies, and you can eventually earn 1UP if you get enough points.
But what really sets Battletoads apart from other platforms is the difficulty. Most of the action in the game is difficult and requires a lot of replay time to get through. Enemies will come out of the walls and attack you when you least expect it. If you're riding a platform shifter, you better expect to jump off an incoming snowball. The game gets harder as you progress, and really challenges the player to keep trying. The levels don't get repetitive at all, and the different stages really do set up for an enjoyable experience.
In the levels where we must hit enemies to advance, we also face a final boss in the second level, in which we cling to a rope down a pit. However, in other phases, such as the motorcycle phases, there are hardly any enemies, but even so this phase is one of the most difficult in the game. As we progress, more and more obstacles appear, making it very difficult to avoid them in the end.
With the exception of the platforms in the fourth phase, which move faster, making it easier for our character to fall into the abyss, the levels in this version are almost always somewhat easier than those in the NES.
On a technical level it is fine, but on a graphical level it does not improve as much as one would expect compared to the NES version. The graphics are not bad, but they are too similar to what we saw on NES, improving only in the color of the levels and the characters in the level of detail of the settings, and also the animation of the toads and enemies is somewhat better.
The music, although the same, sounds much better with the additional notes of drums and electric guitars. The sound effects are not among the best on the Mega Drive, but they are not bad and play well with the action.
Graphics
The graphics are pretty impressive for an NES game. For a (mostly) non-2D game, the different levels and heights of items are done quite well. Especially the rocks at the bottom. The patterns on the walls are also interesting sometimes. The graphics are also very colorful but somewhat gloomy in the background and foreground. They can really make you feel like you're fighting on distant planets (except for the Turbo Tunnel, which feels like you're fighting in someone's intestines).
Music and Sound
Another first one; This is the first console game I can think of that has a (realistic) rock style soundtrack! And the guitars really sound real! Una buena mitad de la música es así, mientras que la otra mitad es música de «caverna» muy serena. There are some exceptions like the level of snow, but that's pretty appropriate for the setting. Overall, most of the music is great and very appropriate for action, fast or slow.
Final reflection
In my opinion, it is an absolute classic and is much better than its predecessor, Battletoads. The various game modes, somewhat humorous cutscenes and the evil dark queen will motivate you to at least try this game. Some will get angry when frustrated at a certain level, while others will enjoy the fun of kicking birds. Next time you see this game, don't pass it by. Buy it and add it to your collection. It's a true epic in how platform games have progressed over the years.
