Dragon Ball Z Buyu Retsuden Sega Mega Drive (???????? ???? Doragon B?ru Zetto Buy? Retsuden?), is the only fighting video game created by Bandai for game console mega drive which features characters from Akira Toriyama's famous Dragon Ball anime series and was released as Dragon Ball Z: L?Appel du destin in France and Spain.

Many people were looking forward to this game when it went on sale (1994) because the rival console Super Nintendo already had a game from the Dragon Ball Z saga that had great sales success. BANDAI's follow-up to the first Dragon Ball Z game with sharper and more spectacular graphics than the Mega Drive version was a success.

Despite the technical differences, Dragon Ball Z Buy? Retsuden had a well-finished technical section and playability up to the task that, at least in Europe, made it a great sales success for the continent's best-selling 16-bit console. The game was never released in America. It is based on the Dragon Ball Z saga from episode 40 to 122.

Ninja gaiden gameplay

It's a good Dragon Ball Z game with ten characters to choose from, Son Goku, Son Gohan, Trunks, Vegeta and many more including evil ones like Cell. It's a normal fighting game like Street Fighter and Marvel Super Heroes.

Each character has dozens of techniques and moves that make it difficult for you to remember each and every one of them, although some are quite useful and powerful. You can use fireballs from the cartoon (Kamehameha) and it's cool to see. You can fly in the sky and move on the ground. With all this, it will be a lot of fun. Of course, two-player mode is not absent here, so you can also play with your friend! Creating combos will also help you win the battle.

I really like the way you play this game. It is very similar to the Dragon Ball Z fighting games released for the Super Famicom, this game has its own unique fighting style: you can fight on the ground and in the air! And you can travel great distances from your opponent. When characters move further than screen distance, a diagonal line appears in the center of the screen, allowing each side to move independently.

The game also involves many energy attacks: you can do a Kamehameha and other energy attacks as seen in the DBZ series. You fight single-round matches, but your character can have two or more health bars per life value. There is also an energy bar for each fighter that you must charge up to perform some of the energy attacks. The bigger the attack, the more power you will probably need. Great, right?

Each fighter has more than twelve or more different moves or attacks. Although the back of the case says it supports six buttons, it is not. You use one button to punch, one to kick, one to hover/land, but the fourth is used only for random selection on the character select screen.

Graphics

The graphics of the game are really impressive. All the characters are like in the anime: the same appearance, the same clothing, and they all benefit from amazing animation. Their stances can get blurry at times and I admit there are several bugs and glitches that can make the game difficult, but each character is finely designed and detailed. Why, you can actually make out the little design on Vegeta's outfits even when he's moving.

They also have very clear details and seeing the Super Sayajins transforming just before the battle is a real pleasure. The frames of each move are downright spectacular and the most damaging ones are a real beauty and add to the depth of the game. The backgrounds are also quite colorful and well done, but they seem devoid of detail and some dots are quite bulky.

Music and Sound

Wow, a lot of voice samples in the Genesis. Eso es realmente bueno, aunque cada personaje dice lo mismo para sus dos súper ataques (y Vegeta ni siquiera dice cuáles son sus ataques, solo dice «¡Kaoh!»). However, some of the sound effects are just plain annoying, like when someone launches a Ki attack. That sound keeps repeating until the next sound intervenes.

The music is not bad, but it is not the best either. The intro music is pretty good (it's a little catchy), but I also like the Namekian music, when you fight Frieza (in Story mode). Catchy, and maybe a little cheesy, but I like it. My favorite, I think, is the music that plays at the end, when the credits roll. I just like it, that's all. Too bad the rest of the game's music couldn't be as good. Maybe it's just Genesis...

Final reflection

Actually, there are several endings. I guess it would be appropriate to list this as FINALS, right? Ok, so endings are great, and there are a lot of them. Each one is developed for its individual character and has large images showing the action as it unfolds. Excellent, excellent, excellent! This is, essentially, almost as good as the endings. The ONLY thing that could have made this perfect is if the endings were clips of full episodes of the actual show, giving us a REAL ending.
