Everything you need to know about Golden Ax
In 1989, SEGA released the video game Golden Ax. It was initially created for the System 16 arcade board, but was also distributed for the Master System, Mega Drive and other video game consoles in 1990, as well as for 16-bit and 8-bit computers. In 2007, the game was reissued digitally for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.45 It is a single or two-player game.
Beat'em ups and hack and slash games have been very popular in arcades and home computers in the 80s and 90s, and Golden Ax is a game of this genre. Along with its medieval epic fantasy setting, it contains some elements that, although they are somewhat reminiscent of RPGs, are not entirely so, since it is linear and has little complexity in the narrative section, and there are no real "options" to choose from. When it comes to developing the adventure, there are no inventory menus, the ability to go to different places, research factors, or evolutions in the character's skills and statistics.
It is an arcade action game, typically beat'em up, in which the objective is to fight with the sword and use very simple magical skills. By activating the magic option we use a spell of greater or lesser power and range, thus proactively increasing the number of spells we use and the damage to enemies depending on the amount of magic we have.
Brief History Golden Ax
The Golden Ax
Yuria It is a strange land, with demonic oppressors. Death Adder's soldiers have invaded the villages. and his own Death Adder has massacred thousands.
Finally, he has kidnapped the king and his daughter, the princess, and has taken the Golden Axe. Only the strongest and most cunning warriors will have the chance to defeat him.
Three warriors appear to challenge Death Adder.
Ax-Battler, the terrible Barbarian, arrives from distant plains. With his enormous strength and courage he faces any enemy.
Tyris Flare, the Amazon, appears from the deep jungles to confront the oppressors. With his swordsmanship and magical powers, he has sworn to save the kingdom.
Gilius-Thunderhead, the Dwarf, wields a deadly axe. His skill and speed in battle outwit the most brutal of giants.
These three characters, like many others, have lost loved ones in the war against the vicious reptilian, Death Adder. Now they have sworn to defeat him even at the cost of their lives.
The challenge is daunting: defeat all of Death Adder's soldiers and beasts, travel through the treacherous route to his castle, demolish Death Adder's son, and face the most powerful enemy, Death Adder himself.
The reward: save the lives of the king and princess and return peace to the kingdom.
This is the plan, but everything can end in a big surprise!
«Brief History of the Beginning of the Game Golden Ax«
Ninja gaiden gameplay
A fantasy video game set in the Middle Ages, in which Death Adder, a villain in the game, terrorizes the inhabitants of the Kingdom of Yuria and kidnaps the princess and the king. We can choose between three characters to rescue the kings, Princess Yuria: Ax Battler is a barbarian-like character named after Conan (he also shares similarities with He-Man), Tyris Flare is an Amazon and Gilius Thunderhead is a axe-wielding dwarf (golden in the original version of the game).
Tyris Flare has the most impressive magic (fire in the original version of the game), as well as formidable combat abilities and limited magic. Gilius has impressive stamina and unique combat skills, as well as average combat and magic skills (his element is lightning). On the contrary, Ax's character is balanced in terms of magic and combat skills, both being average (his element is earth).
They all have enough reasons to take revenge, after losing their mother, Tyris's parents and Ax's mother and Gilius's brother, all of them were killed by Death Adder.
The game mechanics are quite simple: As we move from one point to another, various events occur:
Innocent characters approach us and perform animations that we can only hear. Additionally, we cannot interact with them when they are running away from enemies.
Additionally, the characters' lives are threatened by enemies. Unlike other beat'em up games, when they die and fall into the play area, they do not disappear, but rather turn into a rock.
In the bonus screens, various colored Gnomes run around the screen, dropping potions when hit. The food they drop restores the characters' health.
Dragons and other mythical bird-like creatures are frequently ridden by bad guys.
Enemies that we will meet
Humans: The most dangerous thing about humans are men who wield clubs or maces. Women's axes have greater reach and deal more damage. They all wear helmets.
skeletons: Skeletons, the only class of undead in Golden Axe, are skilled, resilient, and emerge unexpectedly from the ground in advanced stages. They carry scimitars and shields, which appear black if you stay in one part of the level for too long.
Giants: Giants can be hit in a way that allows us to easily land the first blow if we can get them to laugh while they fight.
Giant Knights: Giants of the knight variety are even more powerful and require a more elaborate approach.
Death Adder: He is our last adversary, he will be accompanied by a series of villains. Additionally, Adder carries a heavy ax and can launch magic projectiles in addition to her fire attacks. Combat against him will probably last several minutes, as he is resistant to all forms of damage. To win, it is almost necessary to have a large number of magic potions and a lot of patience.
What are the animals that we will ride during the game?
The cockatrice This mythical animal that has a tail with which to hit and crush opponents is its greatest characteristic.
The blue Dragon It spits fire from its mouth in the form of a waterfall, hitting anyone nearby, it does a lot of damage.
The Red Dragon (only one appears in the entire game) shoots fireballs in all directions and hits anyone who passes by. It is very valuable and must be preserved to increase our chances of victory in the final battle.
What are the different levels that we will find in Golden Ax?
Opening: In this level, the hero encounters a seriously injured soldier who warns him of Death Adder's kidnapping of the king and princess. The Amazons and the minions appear. You have to kill the skeleton to win the stage. We must eliminate the giants.
Turtle village: During this stage we will meet two Amazons riding dragons. We will finish this part after defeating the skeletons.
Populated: In this scenario it will be very difficult to preserve the only red dragon because the enemies will try to attack both sides and jump precisely, since the bridge that connects the village with the town is cut. After defeating the white knight, the final adversary appears from a tavern.
The daemon path: This is one of the most difficult levels, it is a graveyard on a giant eagle, in which skeletons and ghosts fight against the player to avenge the player. They appear in tombs (small piles) and are very dangerous, since they use the same movements as the player and even use their shield as a weapon. In the end, you must defeat the ghost minions and the three skeletons who attack together.
Citadel Castle: This is the last stage of the serpent fortress, here we will find ourselves chained to the king and the princess. In this level the last and great battle of the game will take place where we will have to face Death Adder. Battles that are more than difficult and long lasting, we will need everything we can to defeat him. Following his defeat, he is killed by his own weapon, at which point it rises and falls on himself, killing him.
Graphics
There are some good graphics and level designs in Golden Ax. There are many different settings in this fantasy kingdom, including forests, villages, and the castle. Each level links to the next and keeps the story flowing, supported by the map-story screen that appears between levels. Each level is well designed and uses a variety of backdrops and backgrounds. They look smooth and fairly well detailed, and for a Genesis game from 1989, these are very impressive graphics for their time. Everything looks what it's supposed to be. The enemy and character designs are also excellent in this game, and all the movements and animation look very smooth and fluid. There is hardly any slowdown, if any, so the visual aspects suit this game very well.
Music and Sound
There are also some good soundtracks used in this game. They complement a game of this type very well and vary in themes from optimistic to tense and understated. However, some of this is repeated in some stages, so I thought a couple of new soundtracks could possibly have been used for some levels. The top-notch music and boss theme stand out as some of the best in the game in particular. Personally, I don't think the music in this game is one of the best of all time, but it's well composed, appropriate for where it's used, and sounds nice and easy on the ears. There are also some voice sample scream sounds for when a character is defeated, and a variety of sound effects for the sounds of collecting items and hitting your enemies. All the sound effects are good in this game.
Final reflection
