Everything you need to know about Gunstar Heroes
Gunstar Heroes is a shooting and racing video game developed by Treasure and published by Sega. It was Treasure's debut game, originally released on Sega-Genesis in 1993. The game's premise focuses on a pair of characters, the Gunstars, in their efforts to prevent an evil empire from retrieving four powerful gems. Characters can fire weapons and perform a series of acrobatic maneuvers to fight enemies in each stage. There are four weapons in the game that can be combined with each other to create different types of shots.
Development of Gunstar Heroes began among a team of staff working at Konami in 1991. Following Konami's unwillingness to adopt their original game ideas, the team resigned in 1992 and formed Treasure to pursue their project. The team wanted to develop their game for the Genesis because of the system's powerful Motorola 68000 microprocessor. Sega initially rejected his proposal, but later granted approval after he had been working for Sega for several months on McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure (1993). Treasure worked on both games in parallel and released Gunstar Heroes worldwide as its first game in 1993.
Gunstar Heroes was a critical success, being praised for its frenetic action and advanced graphics. It helped establish Treasure's place in the industry and introduced several design conventions that would become characteristics of his later work, such as great bosses and a unique sense of humor. It was re-released several times, including dedicated ports for the Game Gear and Nintendo 3DS, and received a sequel on the Game Boy Advance. In retrospect, several publications consider it one of the best action games of the 16-bit era and one of the best video games of all time.
Brief History Gunstar Heroes
IS THERE ANY HERO WHO DARE?
In a future time, somewhere not far from where you live, an amazing battle is taking place.
The Gunstar family has been responsible for ensuring the security of the planet Gunstar 9 (G-9) for generations. Professor White Gunstar, in his youth, defeated the Golden Silver robot, a machine that had traveled millions of kilometers to destroy and take all the resources there were and would be from planet G-9. Professor White managed to strip the robot of the four famous mystical talismans (the robot's energy source), and imprison it on one of the moons of G-9.
But now, after years, they feel threatened again. Colonel Red, a vicious dictator (and with very bad taste in clothes), learned that the Gunstars knew of the talismans' whereabouts. One day, the Colonel kidnapped Grenn, the older brother of the Gunstar twins, and used a mind control machine to make Grenn obey his orders.
With Grenn's help, Colonel Red has seized the four mystical talismans, transformed Gunstar 9's peaceful worker androids into deadly threats, and is making preparations to set out for Gunstar 9's moon to reactivate Golden Silver. As one of the Gunstar twins, you must fight your way through Colonel Red's Imperial Army and take the talismans, or else Goiden Silver, the Destroyer, will emerge again and destroy your world! Do you feel like a hero capable of such a risky task?

Gunstar Heroes Gameplay
Gunstar Heroes is a run-and-gun game that plays from a side-scrolling perspective similar to Contra. The game can be played in single player mode or cooperatively with a partner. Players take on the role of Gunstar Red and Gunstar Blue as they battle an evil empire for control of a set of powerful gems.
The game features seven stages, of which the first four can be tackled in any order. Stage formats vary; While some feature a typical left-to-right format, others have the player ride a mine cart along walls, fight enemies in a helicopter, or play a board game. Completing a level grants the player an extension of their maximum health.
When starting a game, the player can choose a free or fixed shooting position; the fixed stance immobilizes the character when shooting, while the free stance causes the player to move in the direction in which they shoot. The player can also choose the starting weapon. There are four types of shots in the game: a homing shot, a lightning blaster, a flamethrower, and a machine gun.
Each weapon has its strengths and weaknesses, and can be swapped with others from item drops in each stage. Weapons can be combined with each other to produce unique shot types. For example, the homing shot can be combined with the machine gun to add a homing effect to the latter, or two ray shots can be combined to create a more powerful ray gun. In addition to firing their weapon, player characters can perform a series of acrobatic maneuvers including jumping, sliding, and grabbing and throwing enemies.
Graphics
The graphics retain their usual clean, bright and colorful appearance, and the scaling and parallax scrolling effects become more noticeable when you have the 3DS system's 3D enabled. The sense of movement and depth is much more defined, and the other usual effects of gunshots, explosions and projectiles flying through the air look very good, with the game flowing very fast and fluid with hardly a trace of slowdown. The game even includes the option to have a 'Classic' screen which gives the screen a blurry, curved effect as if you were watching it on an old school CRT TV if you so desire, but the standard screen fits all. the top screen. and it looks more pleasing to the eyes. In terms of sound, the game has a classic soundtrack of animated themes that adapt very well to the frenetic and fast action.
Music and Sound
The music in Gunstar Heroes is repetitive, but it fits well with the tone of the game. It's intense when the game needs to be intense. It sounds strong and heroic when you are taking down hundreds of enemy soldiers. It's dark and intimidating when you face a particularly tough enemy. The only real problem with the sound is the character Smash Daisaku. He's supposed to be one of the bad guys who laughs like a bastard when he hits you. The only problem is that when he laughs, it sounds like someone trying to start a broken down car. It's a bit distracting, but only comes up during some boss fights.
Final reflection
My only regret about Gunstar Heroes: it's too short, with only seven or so levels, and an extremely promising setting with little plot development (watch the ending and notice how strange it is). Aside from that, this is a game no Genesis owner should do without, and action fans should give it a try. It's like a drug, only with healthy family values, like big-eyed people with guns and big robots that beat up everything in the place.
