Everything you need to know about OutRun
Outrun is one of those games that, once you've gotten used to its controls, gameplay, and mechanics, can easily become a calmer, more relaxing type of game. That is, as long as you don't mind a little stress on your relaxing games that comes from avoiding traffic and dangers. When it was originally released for arcades, Outrun became an incredible influence on the racing genre.
This is evidenced by the way it has been ported to almost every system that was available at the time of release. Obviously, the Genesis had to be downgraded from the original arcade version, but like many Sega games, the developers knew exactly how and what to downgrade while maintaining what makes the game so fun and charming.
Outrun is not about smoking your competition, upgrading your vehicle or blowing up other vehicles on the road. It's a simple arcade racer that simply has you running from checkpoint to checkpoint in an attempt to beat the clock and reach one of five destinations. It may seem as basic and simple as it gets, but Outrun can require a surprising amount of attention and skill when you first turn it on. The main obstacles to avoid are the other cars on the road, and some of these cars go almost as fast as you; No, seriously, if you go under 100 MPH on the speedometer, you'll see some of them go over your head.
Avoiding them can get pretty tricky very quickly, especially when the road narrows and you're dealing with a lot of twists and turns. You should also know how to change the timing between low gear and high gear of your car. Taking longer turns when in high gear leaves you at high risk of hitting a car or hitting a sign/plant/building right next to the road. On the other hand, staying in low gear when you don't have to will cost you valuable time, and you don't have much time in this game unless you plan to reduce it to easy mode.
What really makes Outrun worth playing is the game's presentation, which sets it apart from the average arcade racing game of the day. It's just you and your friend cruising around in a Ferrari Testarossa and enjoying the views while trying not to crash. There's a big emphasis on music in this game, made evident by the way the car engine is silenced to give the music most of the spotlight. Normally the throaty roar of the engine adds to a racing game, but with Outrun it works to silence the engine because the music is so relaxing and wonderful. There are 4 tracks you can choose from before starting the game, and all of them are great examples of how to make music on the right Genesis. Even when the race gets tight and you're anxiously trying to avoid 3 cars on a tight turn, the music keeps everything relaxed and fresh.
The game is fairly short, but surprisingly replayable, thanks to a non-linear design and multiple endings. You start in the same place, but come to a fork in the road before each checkpoint, and whichever path you choose determines what the next part of the race will be until your various choices lead you to one of 5 different endings. There are multiple difficulty options available, which is always a plus in arcade ports as they are naturally designed to be nibblers. On normal difficulty, the game can be a little unforgiving in its time limit. The crashes in this game are pretty violent and, honestly, kind of cool to watch: a full-on collision causes your car to flip over several times as you're both thrown from the vehicle. However, you can't afford too many as the long animation of each crash means that many precious seconds are lost each time it happens. It can be hard, but above all fair.
If there are any obstacles to Outrun, the main one is that some off-road obstacles actually feel like they stick out on the road. It's a little annoying to be completely on the track, but you still end up crashing by cutting into a sprite that appears to be intruding on the road. I get more stressed from avoiding the side of the road than from avoiding other cars most of the time. Crashing into plants and signs is easily the only thing that takes me out of the zone this game puts you in, which is obviously a real bummer. The game is at its best when you're in that almost hypnotic state of surfing to the music, and you don't want it to break. Not a deal breaker by any means, just pretty annoying. As a minor detail, they could have toned down the screeching sound of the tires when braking or turning a little. Fortunately, you can turn off the sound effects if that bothers you.
Outrun may be as simple as it gets, but it oozes charm and presentation as well as a surprising amount of replay value thanks to multiple paths and several final scenes worth watching. It controls smoothly and there's a real sense of speed when you hit some of those straights. Most importantly, though, this is one of those games where you can relax. It takes some practice to get the controls and reactions intuitive, but once you get to that point, it's all about enjoying the views and the music while cruising at 150 MPH. Most of us didn't have the means to speed down a long stretch of highway in a classic Ferrari with a blonde in the seat next to us, and back then this was the best way to live out that fantasy.
OutRun Gameplay
These stages, in their own right, could pass as tracks, you only have to go through five of these stages to win the race. Now, this may sound like a simple task, but to beat the game, you will have to beat the clock. You will have to reach the checkpoints if you want to have any hope of winning the race. The design of these stages is quite diverse. Some of the stages are filled with hilly areas, while others are filled with patches of sand, each of these nuances in each stage can make or break a race for you, so be sure to pay attention to the track itself, or you find yourself eating dust.
The gameplay, no matter the setting, is always fast and furious, as well as addictive. You will fall in love with every facet of the game as you progress through the stages, you will notice things in the game that you would never notice in other games, and you will eventually become one with the game. so make sure you pay attention to the track itself, or you'll find yourself eating dust. Graphics
For the first class of the mid-80s. Like all timeless classics, the graphics may be incomparable to modern games, but they still stand the test of time. The graphics are bright, colorful and full of life. Each level is unique in its own way. The level varies from beaches to vineyards, lakeside towns, fields and deserts. The objects placed around the path are cleverly done and help give the levels their identities. For example, turn left at the end of the first level and you will reach the Gateway. Gateway contains large Stonehenge-like structures that rise above the road creating a tunnel effect. Turn right at the end of Gateway and you will reach Alps. Not only do the mountains in the background look different, but the level is filled with windmills along the way.
Music and Sound
OutRun is auditory bliss, it's as simple as that. Before the race, the game gives you three songs to listen to during the race, each of these songs branching out as you progress through the race, just like the tracks themselves. Nice little touch there. I really like the ability to choose a song before a race because it hasn't been used much since this game. No matter which of the three songs you select, your ears will be delighted. Each song has a fast, upbeat beat that keeps you in a fun mindset that fits perfectly with the upbeat nature of the game.
Final reflection
The game is packed with classic graphics, sounds, music and gameplay. All the elements combine to form a classic. If one of the elements had been turned off, the game would not have been what it is. Luckily, Sega made the magic happen with Outrun.
