Everything you need to know about Rocket Knight Adventures
Rocket Knight Adventures (??????? ????????) is a platform game for Sega mega drive. It was the first in a line of successful games, continuing with Sparkster: Rocket Knight Adventures 2, an unrelated game Sparkster for Super NES and, most recently, Rocket Knight for PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade and PC.
The main character is Sparkster, a possum knight who fights an army of robots and pigs, many of which drive different mechanical vehicles. The Sparkster is equipped with a sword that can release energy at close range and a rocket belt that allows it to fly.
Brief History Rocket Knight Adventures
Last
The world you will find is called Elhorn. It is a magical world of warriors with machinery. It is also the land of the kingdom of Zebulos.
Zebulos It is a kingdom with a long history. Their first king was The Zebulos. Now it is difficult to classify ancient legends and myths from facts. The prevailing belief is that El Zebulos was a brave hero who fought a band of evil invaders who sailed on a powerful ship called the "Pig Star«. These invaders could have led to the destruction of El Zebulos and his clan. They fought tenaciously, and even though El Zebulos was in a critical situation, they would not give up. His courage and belief were the great support to defeat his opponents. After defeating the invaders, El Zebulos became the ruler of the peaceful kingdom, and the Pig Star was preserved under a magical lock to keep it free from the hands of enemies. The "lock key» was guarded by El Zebulos and his majestic family.
From generation to generation the family of El Zebulos keeps the Key. As the Pig Star has a force to destroy the entire world, the Kingdom of El Zebulos is always exposed to the danger of attack. A powerful armed force called Rocket Knights was formed. These armored warriors use rockets and mystical swords, and are highly skilled at protecting and serving the kingdom.
The current leader of the Rocket Knights is the brave Sparkster. He emerged as a leader when the master of the Rocket Knights Mifune Sanjulo was destroyed by an evil Knight named Axle Gear and defeated and expelled from the kingdom, but there are rumors that Axle Gear has clandestinely returned.
The present
The kingdom has recently been attacked by the Devotindos empire. Overwhelmed by the robot army's attacks, the Zebulan forces are nearly destroyed. The Zebulan empire is about to disintegrate. Sparkster feels the presence of the Axle Gear in the attack, which penetrates Castle Zebulan. Sure enough, Axel Gear has kidnapped the Princess! He tries to hold her hostage to threaten the king and obtain the Lock Key, but does not realize that the Princess herself is the only one who knows the location of the Key.
The future
There would be no future if the Sparkster didn't rescue the Princess from the power of the Axle Gear. It is obvious. He must destroy Devotindos' army to end the Axle Gear threat before the Key is recovered and the Pig Star is reactivated.
The fate of Zebulos is in your hands! You control the Sparkster. Are you brave enough to face the challenge of a great fight?«Brief History of the Beginning of the Game Rocket Knight Adventures«
Rocket Knight Adventures Gameplay
It's a side-scrolling platformer with action switches and permanent bosses. The player can jump, attack with the sword directly releasing energy forward or charge the missile belt and fly in one of the 8 standard directions, depending on which direction the player is facing when pressing the D-Pad (If we do not select area to fly to, the spin attack is performed on site).
The levels change occasionally and adapt to other play styles. Some levels scroll horizontally in Martian Hunter, similar to Gradius and even with references to that game in the level. There is also a level where the player controls a giant machine while fighting Axel Gear.
Bosses come in all shapes, sizes and difficulties. They're really reminiscent of classic arcade game boss battles, where bosses perform waves of routine attacks, all of which require you to stay alert and keep moving, or suffer the consequences. The first few times you play them are definitely the best, as you never really know what to expect. Many are persistent bosses over multiple stages, refusing to die until you've taken them out for good.
While the bosses are definitely the highlight of the game, the rest of the game really shines as well. Except for some parts of the first level, there is hardly any similarity between how two parts of the game play out. In the first level alone, you'll be fighting foot soldiers, bipedal robots, and buggies, not to mention running away from a wall of fire, going through a short flying section, learning how to use the rocket pack while bouncing off walls, and fighting 3 bosses.
Graphics
The backgrounds are very detailed in most areas, but lacking in others. In the first stage, there are grass and dirt in front, some burning cabins and some trees behind, and clouds and mountains behind. There are few Genesis games that have this much depth to the backgrounds, although they could be a bit more vivid and colorful, as most levels only have five-color backgrounds. However, they are still effective. Some of them are extremely good, like the industrial level where you can see pig-shaped buildings in four or five different planes. You can even see smoke coming out of some of them.
The effects are quite exceptional; This is probably the most explosions you'll ever see in a pet platformer! They are everywhere since you fight so many machines. They're some pretty funny animations at times, like when Sparkster falls at the end of a rocket flight and flails his arms around as sweat drips from his face. Last but not least, they are some very entertaining cinemas after passing each level. They manage to tell a story that is great from start to finish, but NO text or conversation is used at all! That is incredible!
Music and Sound
Granted, the cutoff doesn't sound like a real cutoff, the rocket pack thrust doesn't sound like a real rocket pack thrust (not that there IS a real rocket pack thrust sound) and the explosions don't sound good either. But all of them are quite satisfactory. The cut sounds like you're throwing swords, but that's not really a bad thing. The explosions are the best I've heard on the Genesis next to Contra: Hard Corps.
The rocket boost sound (which you'll hear quite often) is annoying at first, but goes unnoticed after an hour or so. Those are pretty much the only sounds, aside from some you'll only hear once or twice. The voices (actually pig squeals and rodent squeals) are very irritating, but that only adds to the mood and feel of the game.
Final reflection
This is the best pet game on the Sega Genesis ONLY after Sonic 2. This game has more technique and especially plot than ANY other pet game you can name, because the rest of it makes even less sense than this game (Mario, Sonic, Earthworm Jim, Bubsy, etc.)! Cool effects and great bosses can only carry the game. Sure, it has its flaws, mainly with replay value, but overall, this is one of the best bets for the Genesis, period.
