Ninja gaiden gameplay
Aero Fighters is one of those games that is pretty easy to describe. It's a simple, straightforward shoot-em-up that stands out thanks to its own intense, action-packed gameplay, as well as a surprising amount of multi-play incentives. Aero Fighters, taken from the Japanese arcade game Sonic Wings, obviously makes some improvements to make the transition to a 16-bit console, but manages to retain what makes it an entertaining and worthwhile game. By not relying on some kind of epic space story or a system that features 20 different secondary weapons, Aero Fighters is about as basic as it gets for its genre. You have one main weapon, a limited number of bomb attacks... and that's it. You dodge enemy projectiles, suicide plans, and make things explode while trying not to do it yourself.
Aero Fighters is intense shooter action from start to finish as you fight your way through 3 initial levels that are randomly drawn from a pool of 4. After that, it's 4 more levels that unfold in order. Your main weapon can be upgraded by collecting P icons that appear occasionally, and the final upgrade is incredibly powerful but only temporary until you get another upgrade or drop to the second strongest level. By the standards of the genre, Aero Fighters is not the most difficult game.
However, that doesn't mean it won't offer a stiff challenge; This genre is meant to be difficult by design to hook players into the action. You have to constantly keep your wits about you and your reflexes sharp, as endless squadrons of planes will be hurtling towards you and a couple of brief segments can almost turn into a bullet hell. It's tough, but like any good shooter, it manages to feel fair and very beatable. As energetic as it gets, the game also manages to run with minimal slowdown. Even if there are vignettes dotting the entire screen, the slowdown is rare and very brief.
It's also a fairly short game, but Aero Fighters has a couple of things going for it that justify coming back to it multiple times. You have four pilots around the world that you can choose from, each with a different weapon and a different speed. For example, Villiam and his AV-8 Harrier have a wide-range attack when fully upgraded, as well as a powerful bomb attack, but it comes with the caveat of slow movement which makes some segments quite challenging.
Keaton and his F-18 have a good balance between speed and firepower, his weapon covers less area but deals more concentrated damage. Not only do different drivers have different strengths and weaknesses, but they each have their own ending when you beat the game. However, what really makes Aero Fighters interesting is the two-player co-op option. A second player can choose from their own separate selection of 4 fighters and join in the fun. Cooperative games also have their own endings depending on the pair of pilots used.
Graphics
The graphics are really well done in this game for an old SNES game. The planes and enemies look good and the shots aren't terrible. Additionally, the level designs aren't bad with levels that cover cities, sea, space, and even the odd desert. Also this is a game that is played vertically which fits this game.
Music and Sound
The background music isn't great, but the action and shooting make you forget about it. Explosions and gunshots don't sound very good, but they will keep your attention. The music changes each level. It also tends to match the theme of the level to the type of music it plays. I found myself humming some of the tunes long after I had finished playing. Overall, I think the music is one of the best parts of this game
Final reflection
Overall, Aero Fighters is good in many ways. Except for the extremely difficult gameplay, the game almost has everything. You do like difficulty but not as much. Although it is the difficulty that will keep you playing this game. This is a great buy if you can find it.
