Donkey Kong Country - Titulo del Juego

Donkey Kong Country is a 1994 platform game developed by Rare and published by Nintendo for Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES). It's a franchise reboot Nintendo's Donkey Kong and follow the gorilla Donkey Kong and his nephew Diddy Kong as they set out to recover their stolen banana treasure from the crocodile King K. Rool and his army, the Kremlings.

The single-player mode traverses 40 side-scrolling levels while jumping between platforms and avoiding obstacles. They collect items, ride mine carts and animals, defeat enemies and bosses, and find secret bonus stages. In multiplayer modes, two players work cooperatively or compete against each other.

After developing games for the Nintendo Entertainment System in the 1980s, Rare, a British studio founded by Tim and Chris Stamper, purchased Silicon Graphics workstations for rendering 3D models. Nintendo searched for a game to compete with Sega's Aladdin (1993) and commissioned Rare to revive the dormant Donkey Kong franchise. Rare brought together 12 developers to work on Donkey Kong Country for 18 months.

Donkey Kong Country was inspired by the Super Mario series and was one of the first home console games to feature pre-rendered graphics, achieved using a compression technique that allowed Rare to convert 3D models into SNES sprites with little loss of detail. It was the first Donkey Kong game not produced or directed by creator Shigeru Miyamoto, although he contributed design ideas.

Following its announcement at the Consumer Electronics Show in June 1994, Donkey Kong Country was highly anticipated and supported by a major marketing campaign that cost $16 million in the United States alone. It was released in November 1994 to great success; Critics praised its visuals as innovative and praised its gameplay and music. Its quality and design compared favorably to the Super Mario series.

Donkey Kong Country received several year-end accolades and set the record for the fastest-selling video game at the time. With 9.3 million copies sold worldwide, it is the third best-selling SNES game and the best-selling Donkey Kong game. Following the success, Nintendo bought a large minority stake in Rare, which became a prominent Nintendo secondary developer in the late 1990s.

Donkey Kong Country reestablished Donkey Kong as a popular Nintendo franchise and is credited with helping Nintendo win the console wars of the 1990s and maintaining the popularity of the SNES into the fifth generation of video game consoles. It is considered one of the best video games of all time and has been ported to platforms such as Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, and digital distribution services.

Rare followed it up with two sequels for the SNES, Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest (1995) and Donkey Kong Country 3: Dixie Kong's Double Trouble. (1996), and the Nintendo 64 game Donkey Kong 64 (1999). After a hiatus, during which Rare was acquired by Nintendo competitor Microsoft, Retro Studios revived the series with Donkey Kong Country Returns (2010) for the Wii and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (2014) for the Wii U.

Brief History Donkey Kong Country

It was a dark and stormy night?

Storms hit the rugged terrain of Donkey Kong Island, home of the famous video game monkey and his family and friends. Near Donkey Kong's treehouse, a little monkey named Diddy cowered in fear from the wild lightning bolts that periodically illuminated the lush, dark jungle that covered most of the island. Donkey Kong had assigned Diddy as guard on this terrible night and was not happy with his fate.

Donkey Kong's earlier pep talk kept coming back to Diddy's mind. "It's okay, little friend," Donkey had said in his condescending voice. «As part of your hero training, do you have to stand guard over my bananas tonight? "I'll revive you at midnight, so try to stay awake until then!"

Buddy? Yes of course. Now he was alone. Only unless you counted the unknown threats lurking behind every tree he glimpsed during the lightning. The Kremlings were out there, that was for sure. They coveted Donkey Kong's banana reserves, the largest on the island and probably in the world. A treasure in potassium and vitamin A. The perfect food. «Ahhh? delicious bananas? The thought of DK's golden horde almost made Diddy forget his awkward situation. But a rustling in the undergrowth and the sound of several twigs breaking brought him out of his reverie.

“W-who goes there?!” Diddy braved the sounds in the darkened, dripping foliage. There was no response other than the flash of claws and teeth, followed by a fleeting glimpse of many reptilian eyes and the crash of thunder. Diddy somersaulted into the fray with his signature cartwheel attack, but was quickly overwhelmed by the weight of many scaly assailants. The enormous mass of Klump the Kremling landed on top of Diddy, knocking him senseless. Was your last memory of a whistling voice? «SSSSS the sssmall? ssseal inside this barrel and throw it into the bus salts? "Donkey Kong?sss Bananas are oursss!" The lid of the barrel closed over Diddy, hiding even the fleeting light of the storm. Seconds later, the cannon flew through the air, courtesy of the boot-assisted clearing of Klump's army, and landed roughly in the jungle foliage. Diddy Kong knew no more.

The entire Donky Kong clan was unaware as the Kremlings loaded the horde of bananas into their Kremling karts and took them through the jungle, leaving an obvious trail of fallen fruit from their overloaded vehicles.

The next morning, Donkey Kong was awakened by frantic shouts of his name. “Keep it down!!” he growled. Suddenly he realized what time it was. "It is morning already? “I slept through my watch!” Donkey Kong fell out of bed and through the treehouse door, slid down the treehouse ladder without using any of the rungs, and assumed his trademark fighting pose, eyes half-lidded and blinded by the light! sun! A quick hit was all it took to leave him sprawled on the ground, face down! he turned around in a daze to see the familiar wrinkled, white-bearded, sullen face of his elderly grandfather "Cranky Kong" staring back at him. In his heyday, Cranky was the original Donkey Kong who battled Mario in several of his own games.

“What are you doing that for?!” Donkey Kong asked:

«Take a look inside your banana cave. A big surprise awaits you! Cranky laughed.

Donkey's mind raced as he jumped into the cave and looked inside. Instead of the dull golden glow of thousands of bananas, there were only a few discarded peels. These had been trampled into the earth by hundreds of reptilian feet, judging by the many three-toed footprints that covered the damp cavern floor. But what about?

"Diddy's gone too!" Grumpy laughed. “That's what you get for shirking your responsibility, you useless good-for-nothing! In my day, we would have been happy to stand guard in the rain, because that might have meant having an extra frame of animation! Of course, having rain would have been impossible, given our pitiful processing power, but?

Donkey Kong was stunned and disbelieving and hadn't heard most of what Cranky said. Diddy? It is gone? my little friend?" he muttered to himself.

Donkey Kong was suddenly filled with conviction. "The Kremlings will pay!" he got angry. «I will chase them through every corner of my island, until I recover every last banana from my horde!»

“Find your little friend and recover a bunch of bananas?!” Cranky snorted. «What kind of game idea is that?! "Where's the screaming damsel in distress?!"

«Diddy's obsession with being like me has gone too far! "He may be a long way from being a true video game hero, but did he have the guts, the reflexes, the heart?"

"If you ask me, none of you are ready for prime time," Cranky interrupted. «You will never be as popular a character as me! Wow, in my heyday, kids lined up to play my games! The coins were stacked in the machine as they waited their turn! If you embark on this ridiculous adventure, you'll be lucky to sell ten copies!

Donkey Kong became enraged. Usually he let Cranky's ramblings roll off his back, but this time was different. "What do you know about adventures, you flea-bitten old ape?" shouted Donkey Kong, coming closer and closer, defying Cranky's staff, until he was completely in his face. «I'm sick of listening to your boring adventures on a single screen! "Diddy's in trouble, my banana horde is gone and I'm going to get them all back!"

Donkey Kong ran off in search of his missing friend, following the trail of bananas that the Kremlings had dropped.

“Well, it's not exactly rescuing a princess, but it'll do,” Cranky huffed as DK disappeared into the lush jungle. "Can the boy need my help?" he muttered to himself. "The children of today? "They just don't have any respect for their elders?"

Gameplay Donkey Kong Country

Donkey Kong Country is a side-scrolling platform game. A remake of the Donkey Kong franchise, its story begins when King K. Rool and his army of crocodiles, the Kremlings, steal the Kongs' banana hoard. The gorilla Donkey Kong and his nephew Diddy Kong set out to recover the treasure and defeat the Kremlings.

Donkey and Diddy serve as player characters of the single-player game; They run side by side and the player can switch between them at will. Donkey is stronger and can defeat enemies more easily; Diddy is faster and more agile. Both can walk, run, jump, pick up and throw objects, and roll; Donkey can slap the terrain to defeat enemies or find items.

The player starts on a world map that tracks their progress and provides access to all 40 levels. The player attempts to complete each level while traversing the environment, jumping between platforms, and avoiding enemy and inanimate obstacles. Level themes include jungles, underwater reefs, caves, mines, mountains and factories. Some feature unique gameplay mechanics, such as rideable mine carts, barrel-like cannons, and swinging ropes.

Each area ends with a boss fight with a large enemy. Donkey and Diddy can defeat enemies by jumping, rolling, or throwing barrels at them. If hit by an obstacle, one of the Kongs runs away and the player automatically takes control of the other. They will only be able to control that Kong unless they free the other Kong from a barrel.

In certain levels, the player can release an animal that provides the Kongs with special abilities, similar to Yoshi from the Super Mario series. Friends include Rambi, a rhino who can attack enemies and find hidden entrances; Enguarde, a swordfish that can defeat enemies with its beak; Squawks, a parrot carrying a flashlight; Expresso, an ostrich that flies; and Winky, a frog that can jump high.

Each level contains collectible bananas, letters that spell K?O?N?G, balloons, and animal tokens. These items can be found in the main level or by discovering hidden bonus stages, where they are obtained by solving puzzles. The player starts with five lives. Collecting 100 bananas, all the letters K?O?N?G, a balloon, or three of the same animal token grants extra lives.

The player can visit other members of the Kong family from the world map. Funky Kong operates a flight service that allows the player to travel around different areas of Donkey Kong Island; Cranky Kong, the aged incarnation of Donkey Kong from the original Donkey Kong (1981), provides advice and fourth-wall-breaking humor; and Candy Kong saves the player's progress.

The player can increase his completion percentage by finding bonus stages. Reaching the maximum 101 percent results in a different ending. The game also features two multiplayer game modes. In the competitive "Contest" mode, players take turns playing each level as quickly as possible. In “Team” cooperative mode, you play as a team.

Graphics

This game pushed the SNES to its limits. Fully rendered 3D models in a 3D environment – CRAZY! How did they accomplish this task? Well, they used this super computer called The Challenge to make these models using advanced computer modeling (ACM) and it's 32 megabits. All of this allows for a variety of different levels. From Jungle to Blizzards to Industrial Factory, these graphics are beautiful and don't disappoint one bit

The graphics are very detailed, both in the foreground and background. The graphics engine allows this game to have multi-scrolling backgrounds. «¿Qué significa eso?» you ask? Well, there are several layers, each of which scrolls at a different pace, giving you a more realistic feel.

The environments partially make this game what it is. The graphics really work here. The environments also change depending on where you are in certain levels. For example, when you reach the end of the first level, the sun quickly sets into the night and continues until the end of the second level, where the rain stops and the sun rises to cover the jungle. In the snow levels, there are several layers of snow and as you progress, the snow will get thicker or start to fade. All this makes it a great experience.

The character models are great too. Donkey, Diddy and the entire team are perfectly prepared to look their best. All Kongs have their own look and style. Donkey wears a tie; Diddy has a red shirt and a hat. Transporting you around the island, Funky Kong has all the looks of a radical surfer. Candy Kong, Donkey's love, wears a tiny swimsuit and saves your game. Then we have Cranky; With his old man's plaid vest, his rocking chair and his cane, he is the one who will give you tips.

The world maps are very well done. You can see the geological features of the level on the map before entering. For example: when you go to a cave level in the first world, the map has a cave. Or when you walk into an industrial factory, the building is right there.

Music and Sound

INCREDIBLE. That says a lot, but it doesn't do the sound justice. CD-quality music on a SNES, and not many games can do that. They match each level well and aren't as overwhelming as the sequel. This music is more atmospheric (listen to the water level theme and I guarantee you will LOVE it). Each song sets the mood. From the upbeat, upbeat trumpets of Jungle Hijinks to the soothing, relaxing sounds of Winkies Walkway; The urgent sense of trouble created by the mine cart levels, slowly moving cables, and wind make the mine shafts seem creepy and mysterious. Each song sets the mod like you would never believe.

Final reflection

The game doesn't take long to complete, but one may spend some time trying to obtain 101%. Other than that, you'll only play every once in a while to experience your favorite levels again. However, DKC offers a good challenge. It's not that difficult, but it's perfectly adequate and will keep the player coming back again and again if there's a level that's giving them trouble, rather than frustrating them due to the financial difficulty.

If you are a fan of classic platform games, then Donkey Kong Country is a must-buy. The game has excellent graphics and sound, reasonable challenge, and amazing gameplay that is a worthwhile experience. If you're not a big fan of platforming, I urge you to at least give it a try anyway. Donkey Kong Country is a game that everyone needs in their collection.
