Everything you need to know about EarthBound
In all my years of playing games, I can honestly say that no other game has given me the same experience as Earthbound. It's not just the strange characters, the silly humor, or even the psychedelic backgrounds. Earthbound snes managed to do something that almost every other game tried, and no one else succeeded. This game made me feel for the characters.
On the surface, Earthbound looks, sounds, and plays like a child's game. It has bright, cartoony graphics, with much of the scenery shown at strange, skewed angles. I used to draw buildings like that when I was a kid. The characters also have a cartoonish charm, and the game revolves around the adventures of a group of fairly young puppies. As a child, I was completely enchanted by the game's self-contained world, but as an adult, I have come to realize how sad and merciless the world is, with its fate in the hands of such young protagonists.
EarthBound snes gameplay
EarthBound is a normal RPG, you go through the game fighting battle after battle on your way to Giygas' dominance. In battle you have several options: attack, PSI (magic), items, defend, run, etc. Each character also has their own special abilities in battle. All battles are done in first person, where you don't see your characters, but you see their attacks and enemies.
EarthBound uses a rolling HP system. When damaged, your HP meter begins to drain that amount of damage. Even if you only have 200 HP and the hit is 500, you won't die until your HP reaches zero. This gives you time to heal or run away, a very nice feature. The battle system is extremely fun and not too difficult to learn. Even the most novice RPG players can pick up this title and start playing without having to learn a complicated system.
Most players won't have to consult the free player's guide that comes with EarthBound for help or tips. There are no bosses or incredibly difficult puzzles (which can be good or bad depending on how you look at it) and it's almost impossible to get stuck on a part. If you die, you can simply continue at your last save point with full HP and zero PP (MP in most games). This makes it an easy, but extremely fun game.
And if you somehow get stuck, you can go pay a small fee to the Hint Guy. He will give you a hint on what to do next in the game. The suggestions range from extremely helpful to painfully vague. But do not worry; you should never need to visit it. Even on my first playthrough, I only talked to him once just to see what he was like. One of the best, and one of my favorite, features is that when you are attacked by an extremely weak enemy, you can automatically win the battle without having to fight them.
This saves time and allows you to earn EXP quickly. When attacked by an enemy, you can obtain various types of openings. If the screen flashes blue, it means it is a normal battle and both you and the enemy will act on the first turn. If it flashes red, that means the enemy surprised you and will get an extra first attack.
If it flashes green, you get the first bonus attack. This feature will keep you dodging enemies who try to get behind them and get a sneak attack. Graphics
EarthBound uses the Super Nintendo to its full potential. The character sprites are crisp and clean, and are certainly some of the best in any SNES game. Each character has a unique (and sometimes comical) look. The characters are diverse throughout the entire game and you can hardly run past without stopping to talk to each of them. Whether it's the greenish imp Tendas or the little balls of joy Mr. Saturns, you'll be amazed by all the different characters and their charming personalities.
EarthBound is made up of many areas including towns, dungeons, caves, etc. Each area is detailed beyond anything imaginable for a SNES game. You can examine almost all signs, cabinets, shelves, trash cans, etc. and find an article or message. Something that EarthBound did that wasn't done very often at the time was having enemies appear on screen.
There are no random battles. You can see the enemy's sprite as it runs towards you. The enemies, like the characters, are very well done. The only minor disappointment is the background of the battle. Instead of showing the area you're fighting in, it's simply a lava lamp style background. There are little lava lamp bubbles floating around or maybe electricity in the background.
There are many, many different backgrounds (some unique to a certain enemy/boss) so that makes up for it. The battle system is first person so you won't be able to see your characters in battle, but that doesn't matter much. The enemies are still frame drawings (like in Final Fantasy 6) and look great in battle.
Music and Sound
EarthBound's music is incredible. Some of the best music in any video game EVER. It's so good that there are sites that have dozens and dozens of fan-submitted remixes and vocal versions! There is the normal background music that is bright and cheerful for cities, and happy music for dungeons. There are even songs for certain places. The Drug Store has its own theme, as does the Hotel. The Hotel's theme song is my personal favorite.
There's also the spooky music for when you're not sure what will happen next. In addition to the music, EarthBound has excellent sound effects. You can hear every swing of the bat, hit of the pan and slash of the sword during the battle. Since EarthBound is an older title, there is no voice acting in the game to qualify.
Final reflection
Overall, Earthbound is really great. Its combination of top-notch gameplay with incredible storytelling would make it a great game in any case, but this game went the extra mile. By creating the world of a children's game and then filling it with very serious adult problems, Eathbound really makes the player feel the burden of the Heroes, and the attention to emotional content around every corner just draws you in. Of course, not all players really feel the thrill of the game. If you are one of those players, there is a good chance that you will not like anything about this game. However, if you are one of the players who does, this game will have the power to change your perception of what a video game can be.
