Mega Man games have been around since the days of the NES. With the arrival of the Super NES, Capcom reinvented the franchise and brought us Mega Man . Man in a world gone mad. The reploids, robots inspired by Mega Man X, or just X for short, have gone Maverick, rebelling against humans in an uprising. The Maverick Hunters, led by Sigma, had been keeping things under control... except that Sigma himself became Maverick one day, and the situation became a crisis.

History

One hundred years after Mega Man and Dr. Wily collided; A scientist named Dr. Cain was excavating a site when he came across the late Dr. Light's laboratory, along with a strange capsule. Inside the capsule was a robot, but it was more advanced than anything he had seen before. The robot, named Mega Man X, could think for itself and use logic and reason, something no other robot could achieve.

After fighting through the streets, he finally faced Vile, a war robot, but was defeated. However, just as he was about to be killed, a robot named Zero rescued X. Now X and Zero face thousands of Mavericks with nothing more than skill, luck, and a little help from Dr. Light... Mega Man

Mega Man

From the first stage, it is evident that this game is something special. The first enemies you face are interestingly designed, and while the initial stage is easy, it's difficult enough that you'll be forced to learn and use all of X's abilities to overcome it. So what can X do to get started? Not much. He can fire his Megablaster, charge and fire it, jump, cling, and slide down walls. This last feature will not only save your life, but is absolutely essential to progressing through many parts of the game.

After passing the first stage, it's time for X to get to work. Eight Mavericks, eight scenarios. The Maverick stages are difficult, but ultimately can be overcome with the most basic equipment. Scattered throughout these stages are various upgrades: secondary tanks, heart tanks, and upgrades left by Dr. Light.

Secondary tanks are handy storage devices that store extra life. At any time, by accessing the menu, X can use a secondary tank to recharge his life. To refill secondary tanks, simply collect the vital items that enemies drop when they are defeated.

Heart Tanks are another item found in the Maverick boss stages. Increases X's life bar by a small amount.

Updates are a third type of ignition. They take the form of a large capsule sitting on a stage. When X approaches the capsule, Dr. Light will talk to him a little. Each upgrade gives X a new ability: run, break certain types of blocks with his helmet, or power up These upgrades are often necessary to reach Subtanks and Heart Tanks in many levels.

And once all possible upgrades have been collected in the game, a special secret upgrade can be found: Ryu's Hadoken, yes, that Ryu, from the Street Fighter games. The Hadoken is immensely powerful. With it, X can kill almost any enemy except the last boss in one hit. The Hadoken can only be used while X is at full health, but I have to say that visually it's not very impressive. X's upgraded arm cannon looks much cooler when firing a charged shot.

With all of his upgrades, X becomes a combat monster, easily outrunning most opponents. Except I've left out a vital feature of the Mega Man games: using your enemy's own weapons.

Every time X defeats a Maverick boss in battle, he gains a new weapon. These new weapons are usually a quick way to defeat other Maverick bosses. Spark Mandrill's electric weapon, for example, destroys Armored Armadillo much faster than easier to defeat. This weapon interaction adds another element to the game. The right choice of weaponry can make X's progress much faster and easier.

Graphics

Let me start by talking about what I liked most about the graphics of this game. The backgrounds in the game are truly remarkable and are some of the best backgrounds ever. They are very well varied and very well detailed. I loved the variety of backgrounds that appear in the game. One stage has a snowy background with ice everywhere, while the next stage has a factory-like background with lava at the bottom of the screen. It's this attention to detail that really makes the game's backgrounds so special. And don't even get me started on the background of the opening scenario, it's truly extraordinary.

Another element of the game's graphics that I really liked were the designs of the characters and enemies that appear in the game. Simply put, I feel like the enemy designs in the game are amazing. What I like most about the enemy designs is the fact that Capcom decided to use a lot of the enemies from the old Mega Man games for this game, just to give the old enemies a new, updated look. The result is a leap to classic status, with a variety of new and incredibly designed enemies. I really liked the designs of the enemies in the game.

The boss designs in the game are also great. I really liked the variety of bosses that Capcom presented in the game, and most of the bosses in the game look great. The boss design in the game that I liked the most was the Chill Penguin design as it looked a lot like an average penguin and as some of you know, my favorite animal in the whole world is the penguin. So you know I liked that boss design. That doesn't take anything away from the other boss designs though, because I liked a lot of the boss designs in the game. Even the worst boss skin (Flame Mammoth, in my opinion) still looks pretty good, so it's a testament to how good the boss skins in the game really are.

The character designs are just as good, I especially like the design of the game's two main characters, X and Zero. Some of the other characters in the game look solid as well. One of the character designs in the game that I like the most is Dr. Light. Some of you may be wondering how he is still in this game if the game takes place long after his passing. Well, the answer is simple. He now appears in various capsules, and I like how he flashes a pale white look, making him look like a hologram.

The animation in the game is also amazing. I especially liked the way X's weapons fired, it looked just amazing. Everything moved at a fast pace and the animation was definitely top notch. One of the things I feared most about this game was the possibility of slowdown, after all, the game just screamed that it had the possibility of slowdown, yet there is no slowdown in this game, and I was very grateful for that.

Music and Sound

The game's music is simply fantastic and represents the best music I've heard on the Super Nintendo. The Mega Man series has always had good music in my opinion, so I was really hoping to be impressed with the music in this game. And he was, for the most part. I really enjoyed the music in this game, and I'm a big fan of the music. In fact, if there was a soundtrack available to purchase for this game, I would probably buy it. That's how much I liked the music in this game.

While my favorite theme in the game was the music that played when you selected a boss, the boss selection screen theme, I really liked the music that appeared in the stages. Some of the tracks I liked the most were the music for the Armored Armadillo and Chill Penguin stages, although I'm a big fan of the game's music in general. I think it was one of Capcom's best efforts when it comes to music in the Mega Man series, and considering the quality of the music featured in the other games in the series, it's truly a bold statement. That's a testament to how good the music in the game really is.

The sound effects in the game are a little disappointing, but I still liked some of them. Overall, I feel like the sound effects could have been done a little better. Especially the various sounds of X turning on his gun, they became a bit annoying after a while. At first you can bear the sounds of guns firing, but once you hear the whir of the gun actually being loaded, it gets a little annoying. You can most likely ignore these certain sound effects, but I'm just warning you that they can be a little annoying.

Final reflection

Overall, this is one of my all-time favorite games that sadly doesn't get the recognition it deserves. When asked to name their favorite Mega Man games of all time, this game probably won't appear on most people's lists. However, it appears on my list, right at the top! With great graphics, stunning music, stunning sound effects, and core gameplay that is still unrivaled (even with the numerous sequels released), this is one of the best games of all time that hasn't gotten the credit it deserves. Capcom tried a lot of new things for this game, and it paid off as they have created a truly extraordinary game!
