Everything you need to know about Secret Of Evermore
Secret of Evermore was developed for Super nintendo being the first role-playing video game created in the US released by squaresoft and that it was developed outside of Japan. It was released in the PAL territory of Australia and Europe (German, French and Spanish), later a Japanese version was created that was later cancelled.
The story follows a boy and his dog who are accidentally transported to a fantasy world created by an eccentric doctor. The gameplay has some similarities to Secret of Mana, such as battles taking place in real time.
The player guides the boy and his dog (who constantly transforms as the game progresses) into a perpetual world made up of several different areas that simulate specific eras in human history, such as prehistory. The game also allows you to control the two alternate players (you can control both the boy and the dog) to solve some puzzles.
Brief History Secret Of Evermore
This story begins in 1965 in the small town of Podunk. There was, and still is, a mysterious laboratory on top of a hill, which was built by Professor Sidney Ruffleberg. The teacher Ruffleberg He had been working for many months on building a machine to travel to a fantasy world. But as soon as the machine was finished, the professor mysteriously disappeared and nothing has been heard from him since. Years have passed and the mysterious laboratory remains abandoned.
The year is 1995: a boy leaves the cinema after watching a B-movie. His dog starts chasing a cat and ends up getting into the mysterious laboratory. The boy goes in looking for the animal. And there he meets a kind of Frankenstein that sends him to the imaginary world of Evermore. Together with his dog, the boy travels through different worlds and eras and desperately tries to return to his own world.
In ?Secret of Evermore? You will enter into an incredible adventure. As the hero, you will have to face dangerous creatures from Evermore in different worlds and times, and you will have to use all your cunning to decipher the enigmas and overcome the tests of these action adventures. But you will also find friendly creatures in Evermore who will help you with advice, formulas, ingredients and magical items.
Secret of evermore gameplay
The game's plot revolves around a teenager and his dog (the player can specify a name for each of them, with a maximum of thirty-four letters). Throughout the game, you will be able to explore different areas that represent antiquity in the game's human history:
In times prehistoric, they will encounter primitive people, swamps and forests. This period takes place in the year 200,000 BC.
- antique simulates the Roman Empire and ancient Egypt. I spend about 200 BC
- Gothica refers to the Middle Ages. The date of this act of the game is defined in 1485.
- Finally, omnitopia It is a futuristic space station. That the Year 1,485,000 AD is getting a little out of control
As we move through the game, the dog constantly changes the shape of its body depending on the time we are in. In Prehistory, he becomes a big bad wolf, in Antiqua he becomes a white desert sphinx-type dog, in Gothica he takes the form of a beautiful pink poodle, and in Omnitopia he becomes a robot with the ability to shoot lasers.
The entire dynamics of the game is seen from above the characters, with this view we will be able to avoid hostile creatures or confront them. When we decide to play with the child, our dog companion will be controlled by the AI and vice versa. This control protects and attacks enemies as they appear and we can select with the controller in the menu the aggressiveness that each character that is controlled by the AI will have.
Throughout the game both characters can seek refuge in a city or a cave, where they can recharge vital points or purchase weapons and armor. The boy uses different weapons in the game: a sword, a spear, an ax and even a bazooka.
The first weapon that we will obtain in the game is the «bone breaker«, a bone that our companion will collect for us and that serves almost as the child's first weapon. Each weapon increases in power with use. Except ?bone breaker?, for obvious reasons, all other weapons can cut vegetation.
Our character will use the bazooka in the first battle of the game, but loses it shortly after. The bazooka has three types of ammunition, but when it runs out, the weapon can be used to attack instead of shooting.
Currency
In each stage of Secret of evermore, the currency will change every time you move from one domain to another. Vendors in prehistoric times used ivory; In Antica, a gem; in Gothic, gold coins; And in Omnitopia, the credits. There are people in every region who convert the current currency to the local currency.
There are also other currencies like those used in the market: rice, spices, decorative rugs?
Alchemy
This is a unique item in Secret of EvermoreLet's say it's your magic system. To use it, our main character must receive a alchemy recipe of an alchemist that we will find everywhere in the game. Some alchemists place their dwelling in an isolated area and will only show recipes if the player finds them.
Unlike other RPGs of the time, you don't need magic points to cast. spells in the game. However, certain materials are needed to create them; Some of them are scattered throughout the game, while others are located in specific areas. In the primitive spheres one can obtain wax, gunpowder, ash either clay. Then the ingredients become more complex, like the ethanol or the dry ice.
When we need to find ingredients, our faithful companion will look for them since he can smell them, and this can be seen when his nose is on the ground. The main player can command the dog to sniff anytime, anywhere, and if all goes well, it will take the player to a certain point on the map where ingredients can be collected.
Frequent use of alchemy recipes will improve their use and will be more effective for healing or attacking. Although there are dozens of recipes throughout the game, only nine recipes can be learned at a time. To overcome this obstacle, there were alchemists who could handle the boy's list of recipes; In this way, the alchemist can save any recipes learned for later use.
My goodness, what a longer game, I didn't remember that this piece of game took me more than 4 hours to play. I loved remembering the story and the characters, for the time it is a very well structured and very successful game.
Graphics
I don't have much to say about the graphics other than they are as good as you would expect from a Square game. However, I did notice that human figures were particularly well represented here, compared to other games. In the same vein as Secret of Mana but much darker and more varied, and that's it, it's hard to say anything else because it has similar animations, the same Mode 7 effects, etc. It's perhaps worth noting that the characters, with the exception of our cool dog, are mostly pretty ugly, but you won't be overwhelmed by the proliferation of characters anyway, Evermore is mostly an inhospitable place.
Music and Sound
The sound is really excellent and evocative. The music in general is pretty good; I like that it doesn't go for grandiloquence like other games do, particularly during the castle scenes. The music here seemed to play a much more dramatic role than in other games. For example, in Ivor Tower, a citizen tells you early on that it is the happiest place in Evermore. The music, however, tells a different story, being exceptionally tense and repetitive. When you arrive at Ebon Keep, the desolation of the place is undercut by very calm music. Some of the best scenes, however, are those that don't use music at all, leaving only an auditory backdrop of sound effects. It's sinister and creepy in a way that a minor key dirge could never be. Again, I think this shows true respect for the player. The game doesn't hit you over the head or tell you how to react; Trust that you will get it.
Final reflection
After reading all the reviews for this game I still can't understand what makes it the evil software everyone is talking about, in fact I have yet to meet anyone who doesn't love this masterpiece to death. Secret of Evermore is an outstanding, epic and hugely underrated and underrated adventure better than the original Secret of Mana and, for me at least, easily one of the best audiovisual experiences ever.
