Everything you need to know about The Amazing Spider Man Lethal Foes

Super Nintendo The Amazing Spider Man Lethal Foes - Titulo del juego

I still don't understand why The Amazing Spider Man Lethal Foes was a Japan-only release. Spider-Man is well known around the world, so fans of the character are sure to purchase copies of this game. Whatever the reason, the game never left Japan and many people don't even know it exists. So I was very excited to play a fan-translated version.

There are two fan translations available and I played the most recent version. The talented person behind this version is ?Gorgyrip?, who made two versions: a standard version and an all-caps edition. Let's talk about that.

The Amazing Spider Man Lethal Foes is an action platformer that was developed and published by Epoch Co. The game is supposedly based on the Lethal Foes of Spider-Man comic book miniseries, but the stories are quite different. In this game, Doctor Octopus has been stealing different types of equipment. At the same time, an army of Spider-Slayers began attacking New York. It's up to Spider-Man to save the day.

Gameplay of The Amazing Spider Man Lethal Foes

The game is divided into several stages, each with a time limit. You will have to reach the end of the stage before time runs out. If it runs out, you lose a life. Some of these stages have a boss character at the end, and you'll also need to beat them before time runs out. When playing this game, you must keep in mind that you must reach the end as quickly as you can.

You have a health meter in this game, as well as multiple lives. Throughout the stages, you will be able to find power-ups that can recharge your health or give you extra lives. Some enemies also drop these power-ups. In the options menu, you can choose to start the game with three, five, or seven lives. You can also change the difficulty of the game here. This ranges from Practice, Easy, Normal and Hard. You also have the option to change the face button settings here as well. Finally, the game has a password system to save your progress.

The game can be played in Japanese, but you'll miss a lot of flavor text. The game's plot is pretty good, so I recommend playing the translated version if you can.

Spider-Man moves and abilities

In The Amazing Spider-Man: Lethal Foes, Spider-Man can do his usual moves. He can walk from left to right, crouch, crawl and jump. However, his jump is a bit floaty and it takes him a while to reach the top of his jump. At first, I released the jump button too soon, so I thought Spidey's jumps were too low. You must hold down the jump button to reach the maximum height of your jump.

Spidey can punch while standing. The slam attack chains its blows together, and the third hit is an uppercut that ends the combo and sends enemies flying. He does a low kick while crouching. He also has a handy upward punch that you can use if you need to attack an enemy directly above you.

In the air, he has a kick that launches him diagonally downwards. This makes aerial combat tricky, because you have to be higher than the enemy you're trying to attack in order to deliver your dive kick.

It also has the ability to fire web pellets, dealing a small amount of damage to enemies. It's strange, but Spider-Man doesn't use his webs to restrain enemies in Lethal Foes. It has unlimited straps, so you can spam web shot shooting.

You can also aim the web pellet upwards. Unfortunately, you can't aim diagonally. And I'm not sure if you can shoot straight down, but I can't imagine it's necessary.

Crawl on the wall and swing on the spider web

Spidey can also climb walls and ceilings, and even along some walls in the background. However, there are some issues with how this was implemented in The Amazing Spider-Man: Lethal Foes. The first problem is that Spidey doesn't wrap around surfaces. Going from a wall to a ceiling or floor is more difficult than it should be.

Spider-Man is also quite vulnerable when climbing walls. You cannot make melee attacks while on walls or ceilings. And web granules behave quite differently. When you're crawling on the floor or ceiling, Spider-Man fires his pellets horizontally in front of him. When he is against a wall, he shoots these pellets towards the opposite wall. So if there is an enemy climbing the same wall, you can't attack them.

Web swinging is implemented differently in this game. This movement is assigned to the side buttons. Pressing L will make Spidey shoot a web line to his left and R to his right. Web swinging is a lot of fun in this game, just press and hold a shoulder button and watch Spidey fly away. Don't worry about missing the stages, as the game was designed with the goal of reaching the end as quickly as possible.

Speaking of fast, Spidey has a run button in this game, just like Mario. This is especially useful for long hallways. Pressing the attack button while running will execute a shoulder charge. So feel free to run as many times as you need.

Incredible use of the license

The developers did a stellar job using the Spider-Man license for The Amazing Spider-Man: Lethal Foes. Let's start with the box art, which was by artist Mark Bagley (longtime artist on The Amazing Spider-Man and Ultimate Spider-Man), inker Karl Kesel, and colorist Paul Mounts. Hiring real artists who also worked for Marvel to create original art shows how much they respected the franchise.

And the story reads like it was written by the Marvel Comics writers themselves. As Spider-Man follows the trail of Doctor Octopus and the Spider-Slayers, he crosses paths with many other villains. You will face characters like Venom, Carnage, Mysterio, Lizard, Scorpion, Beetle and Green Goblin in this game. They fit well into the game's story. I never felt like a villain was forced into the plot.

There is no gameplay benefit to guest appearances. But they help add to the immersion, and I'm sure comic book fans and Spider-Man fans will be happy to see them, as I was.

Graphics

The Amazing Spider-Man: Lethal Foes is the best 16-bit Spider-Man game available, in my opinion. The sprites in this game look very good in terms of detail and animation. Plus, they're also pretty thematically accurate. Spider-Man moves how you expect him to, and the same can be said for his enemies.

All the stages look amazing too. They have a lot of details, and the developers made good use of color and lighting in them. I didn't notice any advanced visual tricks that SNES is known for, but they didn't need to use any here. Especially since each of the stages was designed to be treated in two minutes or less.

Presentation-wise, the game is quite polished. The names use fonts that resemble those Marvel uses in the Spider-Man comics. Named characters have headshots right next to their health meters. If you let the game idle, you will have detailed profiles of each of the characters that appear in the game. While the game does not use the comic panel art style for the cutscenes, they instead use word balloons and in-game art. So the scenes still have that comic book feel.

Music and Sound

This game also has amazing music. I don't know why, but the game's opening theme and boss fight theme fit the character of Spider-Man very well. It's as if the themes were written with Japanese tokusatsu TV shows in mind, using a lot of brass instrumentation like trumpets. The other stage music was great, but I'll remember the boss fight theme from this game for a long time.

Final reflection

Although far from perfect, The Amazing Spider-Man: Lethal Foes is a really good game. It has great production value and was made with a lot of respect for the source material. I think this would have received good reviews and sold well if it had been localized for English-speaking audiences. And yes, there are some design flaws that make the game feel a little clunky. But it was easy for me to get used to the game mechanics and find a way to play with them. The positive aspects of this game far outweigh its flaws.

Spider-Man fans and comic book superhero fans should give this game a try. And if you can, play the fan-translated version, because the game's story makes it more fun to play. If you don't like superheroes or Spider-Man, the clunky gameplay mechanics may put you off a bit. As for me, I loved this game a lot. The Amazing Spider-Man: Lethal Foes is definitely in my top five when I talk about SNES superhero video games.
