Everything you need to know about Burnout 3 Takedown

Burnout 3 Takedown. Your tires screech as you fly around the corner. A cyclone of dust follows you and a pile of wrecked cars passes by, a pile of destruction. Red. White. Blue. As soon as you keep your balance, two wheels tilt to the sides. Ahead, a car flips from end to end. He cartwheels towards you. Shards of glass dot the undulating pavement. You move wide, cut the rail, then dodge left and enter the next turn. A touch of the button depletes your momentum reserves and sends you adrift. It takes you around the corner and straight into a crowded intersection. Welcome to Burnout 3 Takedown

Maybe you've played some racing games in the past. You know what it feels like to select a car, choose the mode you want to play. You even recognize the excitement that comes with unlocking a new set of wheels or a new racing location. But unless you've played one of the previous Burnout titles, each developed by Criterion but published in the past by Acclaim (this one is run by Electronic Arts), you probably don't know how much fun driving like a maniac can be. It's not your daily monster. I'm talking about the kind with flecks of foam dotting the windshield, the kind of guy who dives into an arctic lake in the dead of winter. Here, you can not only reduce cars to scrap metal; you are rewarded for it!

Imagine a quiet mountain pass. The birds are singing, a soft punk rock song plays in the background (unless you've wisely abandoned the trash music offerings on the record in favor of a custom soundtrack), and in the distance the sun sways in a cloudy sky. There you sit, engine revving, in your beautiful dump truck. A light flashes and you're off, not to win the race, but to get your massive beast to the nearest intersection. Your mission: cause as much monetary damage and chaos as possible. Pick up some score multipliers along the way, then launch headlong into an intersection and watch cars crash into place, skyrocketing your score so you can get the cash needed to unlock an even sweeter ride. The worst thing you can do is have only a few cars crash. Is this sick or what?

Of course, as exciting as it is to cause such chaos without an impact on the world, such diversions would quickly become tedious without a little extra spice. Said spice comes in the form of one of the best-designed career modes ever devised. Oh, and one more thing: they keep encouraging you to drive like a crazy person.

Burnout 3 Takedown Gameplay

The only problem with these is that they move away from your point of view (thus breaking your concentration). Let's say you're calculating when you're going to start skidding and suddenly someone steps between you and the railing. You push them and they collide, the Takedown camera will take over and you will see them fly. Unfortunately, you've now just lost sight of the turn you were about to make and that can seriously distort your perception of the angle at which you need to hit it. Fortunately, this is an optional feature and can be disabled in the options menu. Let's say you're calculating when you're going to start skidding and suddenly someone steps between you and the railing. You push them and they collide, the Takedown camera will take over and you will see them fly.

Graphics

So far, the series has had pretty good graphics. However, 3 stands out as one of the best-looking Xbox titles out there. If you get the chance to take a break during all the high-octane racing, stop and take in the visual environment. Everything from the rolling mountain landscapes to the gritty storefronts are all rendered in high-resolution 3D. The game runs at a smooth 60 FPS and yet manages to be an incredibly fast ride.

The trippy speed effects when you activate the boost still linger from previous Burnouts, but coupled with the redesigned graphics engine, it looks much sweeter. The crash physics are always a sight to behold in these games and now they look better than ever. In previous editions, the crashes were simply twisted metal and splintering glass. In the third installment, expect to see explosions and sparks the likes of which haven't been seen in the Burnout games so far. It's a total race.

Music and Sound

I have no criticisms for the sound of this game. It's crisp and vivid with all the flavor of smash-em'-up racing. The announcer is surprisingly not annoying and sounds like a modern DJ. My main fault with this category is the rather bland set of music tracks they chose for this game. In the last 2 Burnout games, the music was generic unlicensed rock tracks. With the arrival of 3, music finally got the injection of real licensed bands it needed.

Unfortunately, the picks they chose are quite weak. They chose the right genre (heavy metal) but really skimped on the songs. The soundtrack is populated with bands I'm not familiar with (you may find some recognition, but I only found about 2 groups I'd actually heard of before).

Final reflection

I haven't seen such a complete racing game in a long time. Although the Rush series is still my favorite, Burnout 3 Takedown is on its way to stealing that title. Fast racing and solid control make a great combination and don't come together better than Burnout 3. This game will be a great complement to this winter's Need for Speed ??Underground 2 (also from EA) and should satisfy your racing urges. for a long time. I'm hoping for a sequel because I'm far from exhausted on this series.
